Yes. We support a range of services and devices to help viewers access and enjoy content.
Accessibility services
Subtitling
Most programmes on Freeview have optional subtitles to help viewers who are deaf or hard of hearing. This service is available on all Freeview devices.
To access subtitles, either press the Subtitles button (this may be shown as SUB) on your set-top box or TV's remote control, or press the Menu button, then follow the on-screen options until you reach those for language and subtitles.
Audio description
Some programmes are audio-described for people with sight problems, from soaps and dramas to children’s TV and films. Programmes with audio descriptions can be accessed through all Freeview HD and Freeview Play equipment.
To access this facility, either press the Audio Description button (this may be shown as AD) on your set-top box or TV's remote control, or press the Menu button, then follow the on-screen options until you reach those for language and subtitles.
Signing
Some TV programmes may also have sign interpretation. These are dedicated versions of the programme, so the signer can’t be turned on or off.
How do I know which programmes have these?
You can identify which programmes have these services by looking out for these icons in your TV guide and programme information:
- S - subtitled
- AD - audio described
- SL - sign language
Specialist equipment
Many digital TV devices or systems also have other features that can help people get the best TV experience. These include:
Talking devices
Known as voice guidance, or text-to-speech support, these devices guide visually impaired users on what is happening as they navigate TV services with the remote control.
Induction loop
Induction hearing loop systems are designed to reduce or cut out background noise, so you can hear sounds more clearly. You can use hearing loops with most digital TVs and boxes. If you're watching with someone else, a loop system means you can set the volume to a level that's comfortable for both of you. All you have to do is adjust the volume on your hearing aid or loop listener.
