Celebrate Halloween the fair trade way

29 August 2024

Boo! What's really scary?

Forget vampires, witches, goblins, skeletons and haunted houses…unfair trade practices (think: union busting, unsafe working conditions and market prices that are miles away from the cost of production) are truly frightening! This October, support a fairer future by choosing Fairtrade chocolate for your Halloween celebrations.

Let's talk trick-or-treating!

  • Tiny Tony's surrounded by a spooky cobweb.

    Tiny Tony's from Tony's Chocolonely

One of our favorite Fairtrade chocolate brands, Tony’s Chocolonely, makes individually wrapped, kid-sized “Tiny Tony’s” chocolate bites.  Available flavors include milk chocolate with caramel and sea salt, straight-up milk chocolate and a variety pack. Buy online or look for them near you with Tony’s Store Locator!

  • Chocolate Minis from Divine

At Divine, farmers are co-owners of the business, so they get paid for the cocoa that they raise and sell, AND they receive a share of the distributable profits from the sale of the finished chocolate (for example, the milk and dark chocolate minis that will make your house the most coveted trick-or-treat destination on the block!). The profit sharing that results from this co-ownership structure increases available resources for farmers to invest in their own families, farms and communities. Sweet!

During Halloween, it’s always a treat to see kids dressed up as their favorite animals. If you’re handing out candy this year, choose Endangered Species Chocolate to support species like wolves, turtles and gorillas. Every purchase helps raise awareness about at-risk animals across the globe, and the cocoa is certified Fairtrade, so it’s doing good for people AND planet.

These Gold Bars from Fran’s Chocolates are spooky good–in no small part because of the Fairtrade sugar and Fairtrade cocoa that make them possible! They are rich with buttery caramel, chocolatey goodness and delectable nuts (think: macadamia, almond, peanut). Which will you choose?

Does all of the sugar at Halloween start to feel cloying to you? We refer you to Twins Love Chocolate. Always dark chocolate, always just six simple ingredients that are handcrafted in Florida. These sweet treats have only 3 grams of unrefined coconut sugar each, and darn they go well with a cup of tea after the little goblins and witches have gone to bed.

1994 was the year Fairtrade started certifying cocoa!

Fairtrade works with and for farmers to make trade fairer. Here are three ways that we’re doing that:

1️⃣ Fairtrade supports the rights of workers and farmers to organize as unions.

2️⃣ We have a host of standards to keep folks safe while on the job (think: access to clean drinking water, trainings on proper tool use, freedom from discrimination).

3️⃣ The Fairtrade Minimum Price is a price floor to offer farmers a buffer against market volatility. What about when the market price is higher than the Fairtrade Minimum Price? Awesome–farmers receive that. But when the market price tanks, the Fairtrade Minimum Price stands. And on top of the selling price, Fairtrade cooperatives earn the Fairtrade Premium–an additional sum that they democratically invest to align with the needs and priorities of their communities (for example, paying school fees or constructing a medical clinic).

We’re in this together
