"Authority implemented to tackle incidents of anti-social behaviour, crime & disorder."

Earlier, the Metropolitan Police said that "flares, bottles and fireworks" had been thrown at police during the chaotic scenes.

However, the force said that this had been "small pockets of disorder" during a largely peaceful march.

The Met Police said as of 7.45pm on Saturday the area around Trafalgar Square is clear and the main crowd from the march dispersed.

There were also warnings that action would be taken against anyone showing support for Hamas or deviating from the agreed route.

Protesters on the route to Westminster could also be heard chanting "Rishi Sunak, shame on you" and the slogan "from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free".

While the number of protesters has yet to be confirmed, it is thought that several thousand attended the march.
