Prince Harry is viewed as a "threat to the crown" from some of those inside the establishment, according to royal author and journalist Omid Scobie.

Mr Scobie has been referred to as Meghan Markle's mouthpiece for his pro-Sussex writing, and his latest release Endgame made some controversial claims when it was published in November last year.

Amongst them is that the author apparently knew the real reason why Harry wanted to leave, and it was to do with his personal freedom.

In the book Mr Scobie writes: "These are probably sad realisations that will be had far too late in the journey. In the eyes of some within the institution, Harry is a threat to the crown. His freedom to exert his own thinking outside of the confines of the institution has made him the enemy."

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced their intentions to leave the Firm in January 2020, later making their home in Montecito in Meghan's home state of California.

Since then they have remained estranged from the Firm, with their tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021 and subsequent Netflix documentary series doing little to improve relations.

One royal in particular who has struggled to patch things up with his younger brother is Prince William, whom Harry accused of physically attacking him in his memoir Spare.

Mr Scobie alleged that nothing had changed in their relationship over the years and their chances at a reconciliation currently seem low.

In the book Mr Scobie states: "I was talking to a source quite early on in the process, and they called Harry a 'defector' and said that was William's view.

"These were two men who once upon a time were firmly aligned in their outlook. One of them had to move on to also protect the crown."

A source said that the Prince of Wales no longer recognises Harry since his relationship with Meghan, and "doesn't want to know" him anymore.

Harry may yet have more luck mending his relationship with his father King Charles, but insiders say the monarch is more focused on "peace and tranquillity in his twilight years".

An insider told The Mirror: "Harry's made his bed. I'm an advocate for protecting your peace, and if this young man is bringing the drama, then good on King Charles for giving him the space he needs to grow."

There has been speculation that the King may invite Harry and Meghan to Balmoral this summer, as he is said to be keen to see his youngest grandchildren, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
