New weather modelling maps have revealed a shocking prediction that the UK could soon be entirely blanketed in snow as a 'Beast from the East' weather system looms.
The maps, utilising the ECMWF weather model, trace a colossal blizzard traversing Europe from the east on February 10, making its first appearance in East Anglia around noon. The data indicates that snow will be descending at a rate of approximately 1cm per hour during these initial flurries, with London, the Midlands and Yorkshire also targeted.
According to the weather maps, snow will then blanket the UK, reaching the south-west of England, Wales, northern regions of England and southern areas of Scotland by 6pm. In the most intense flurries further north, the data suggests snow could be falling at a rate of around 3cm per hour.
Northern parts of Scotland won't escape either, with snowfall predicted there later on February 10 and into the early hours of February 11. Snow depth charts for February 11 reveal the staggering extent of the blizzard - with 95 per cent of the country covered.
The heaviest snowfall is anticipated around the Scotland-England border, where up to 22cm (almost nine inches) could be settled on the ground by midday. The Scottish highlands could see as much as 14cm (more than five inches), reports the Mirror.
In England and Wales, between 1cm to 3cm are expected. Only Northern Ireland is forecasted to be spared.
The Met Office forecast for February 6 to February 15 states: "It is likely to be rather more settled across the UK in this period, especially at first. High pressure will sit close to, or over the UK, and will most likely drift away slowly eastwards with time. Consequently, southern and eastern areas are likely to see the driest conditions, with lightest winds, which could lead to overnight frost and fog with temperatures a little below normal.
"Further north and west, there is a risk of incursions of Atlantic air and fontal systems at times, which would bring some rain here, but with milder temperatures. There is a very low chance that if the high orientates in such a way that a more easterly (rather than southerly/southeasterly) flow develops, a spell of much colder conditions could develop across the UK."
