About this audiobook
"I was a member of a small company of emigrants, who were attacked by an overwhelming force of hostile Sioux, which resulted in the death of a large proportion of the party, in my own capture, and a horrible captivity of five months' duration. Of my thrilling adventures and experience during this season of terror and privation, I propose to give a plain, unvarnished narrative, hoping the reader will be more interested in facts concerning the habits, manners, and customs of the Indians, and their treatment of prisoners, than in theoretical speculations and fine-wrought sentences." Readers find this title to have a mixed reception. Some reviewers found the narrator's inflection annoying and couldn't get through the book. Others enjoyed the history lesson and appreciated the personal experiences shared. The narration was a point of contention, with some finding it distant and robotic, while others struggled with the narrator's accent. However, the recording quality was good. Overall, the book provides perspective on the conflict between natives and whites, although some hypocrisy is evident. Despite the mixed reviews, potential readers may still find value in this title.

- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I don't usually review but the narrator for the audiobook is just terrible. It's like a kindergarten teacher reading a story but in a way that completely turns me off of the book. Listened for ten minutes and have turned it off and unsaved it.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Love the midwestern accent. Probably very biased but still entertaining
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5I didn't get past the first couple of minutes. The narrators reading was very bad. I wanted to listen to this book and will at another time but not with this narrator.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Interesting story , thoroughly enjoyed the history lesson from the one who was there not a misinterpretation in speculation by one who wasn't there.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Narration was so bad I couldn't get through the first chapter.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Wow. the narrator. someone should re-do this book. i’ll try to find a written version. Too bad librivox has no sort of quality control.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I didn't like the narrator, her accent was very hard to get used to. Couldn't finish the story.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Provides the personal experiences the generalities of our history books fail to capture. I was immediately put off by the narrator, sounding distant, and robotic (could actually be AI), BUT you'll see that it works once you can consider the contents of the book.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book gives a lot of perspective on the conflict between the natives and whites. Though the hypocrisy is palpable at times, it is important to remember there are always two sides to every story. The recording quality was good. The sing song narration was annoying.
