During World War II, Air Raid wardens had the task of patrolling the city streets during blackout to ensure that no light was visible. If a light was spotted, the warden would alert the person responsible by shouting "Put that light out!" or "Cover that window!". The wardens also patrolled the streets during air raids and doused incendiary bombs with sandbags where possible. For protection they were issued with the “Brodie” Helmet. This was the traditional British Army helmet from both World Wars and gave effective protection against airborne shrapnel. It was used by all services of the military as well as firemen and medics. Warden's helmets were painted dark blue and featured the letter "W" for Warden in bold white writing. Chief Wardens wore white helmets with blue/black lettering to make them easily identifiable. Please note: The circumference of the inner lining of this helmet is 21”. It is perfect as an educational aid for children or for display but will not fit most adults.
