How to choose and buy fresh peaches

How do you pick a peach that’ll be sweet, juicy, and flavorful? Here are a couple of tips to help you pick the perfect peach.

• Try finding local peaches: Local peaches don’t have to travel as far, so they are picked when they’re ripe. Peaches that have to be shipped are usually picked underripe so that they hold up better.
• Check the color: Peaches should have vibrant tones and colors. Peach with lighter areas with a slightly green hue might have been picked up too early.
• Squeeze the peach: Gently press or squeeze the peach – if it just starts to give, it’s ripe and ready to eat. If the flesh is still firm, the peach will be crunchy, or not ripe yet.

How to store peaches

Store fresh peaches at room temperature with the stem side down. You can line them up in the order of ripeness so you know which one to eat next. If the peaches ripen fast, you can store them in the refrigerator for a couple more days, but eat them before they start to get wrinkly, which is a sign that they’re starting to dry out.
