Your porch is an important outside area for lighting. You want convenient lighting that highlights your porch — whether it’s in the front, back or on the side of your house — and gives off enough light to both see visitors and create a warm, inviting atmosphere. With recessed lighting in your outdoor spaces, you create a dynamic environment for entertaining and relaxing.
Recessed lighting, which is installed directly inside a ceiling or other surface, is a good choice, as it doesn’t require additional space and can provide widespread lighting. In this blog, we’ve put together eight outdoor recessed lighting ideas for your porch or patio.
Small, cozy patio. Light up your small patio area with sleek, modern recessed lights. You’ll only need a few to illuminate the entire sitting area and make it attractive for both your family and guests alike.

Dining al fresco. Do you have an outdoor covered dining area that needs some mood lighting? Recessed lights here can create a romantic, candlelit atmosphere that’s as soft and inviting as a summer night. Concentrate the recessed lights in small areas to create shadows. Trust us — it creates a mysterious yet inviting atmosphere.
Slanted ceiling outdoor patio. Recessed lights are perfect for slanted ceilings, as regular light fixtures usually don’t look right in them. If you have, or are creating, an outdoor covered area with slanted ceilings, opt for recessed lights to brighten it up.
Slanted eaves. If you have a small porch with slanted eaves, you might consider recessed lighting there. It’s a great way to light up the area, whether you use it simply as an entranceway or have seating there. If it’s a small area, you’ll want to place the lights closer together than you would with a wide-open area.
Rectangular roofline. If you have a more modern house with a rectangular roof and eaves, consider using rectangular recessed lights to brighten up the porch area, or simply to light up the areas along the sides or back of the house.
Wrap around porch. Whether modern or traditional, a wraparound porch can benefit from recessed lighting in the ceiling. It makes the area more inviting for those warm-weather nights. Remember that a larger area will need lights spaced further apart, and a small area will look better with them closer together.
Modern wooden ceiling. If you have an area with modern brown panels in the ceiling, or are creating one, recessed lighting will complement the sleek, modern design and accentuate the dark color.
Garage lighting. If you don’t have a porch to light up, you might want to light up the eaves above your garage. A few recessed lights strategically placed above your garage door create a warm, inviting glow for your home.
