Attorney General Garland Responds to Supreme Court's Idaho Abortion Ruling

Attorney General Merrick Garland spoke out after the Supreme Court cleared the way for Idaho hospitals to provide emergency abortions, for now. The high court's procedural ruling, however, left key questions unanswered and could mean the issue ends up before the conservative-majority court again soon. By a 6-3 vote, it reverses the court's earlier order that had allowed an Idaho abortion ban to go into effect, even in medical emergencies.

00:00I want to address today's Supreme Court order in Moyle v. United States.
00:04The Justice Department filed this lawsuit because EMTALA guarantees essential emergency
00:10care to all Americans, no matter which state they live in.
00:15If a patient comes into an emergency room with a medical emergency seriously jeopardizing
00:23the patient's life or health, EMTALA requires hospitals to offer the treatment necessary
00:29to stabilize that patient, including pregnancy termination, if that is the treatment required
00:36to save a woman's life or prevent serious harm to her health.
00:41Today's order means that while we continue to litigate our case, women in Idaho will
00:47once again have access to the emergency care guaranteed to them under federal law.
00:54The Justice Department will continue to use every available tool to ensure that women
01:00in every state have access to that care.
