Club historian Rob Mason pays tribute to the late Charlie Hurley
Transcript
00:00 The pitch, one of the greatest things about Charlie Hurley was, like all true legends of the game, he was as good off the pitch as he was on it.
00:10 A gentleman, a man with a great aura, and if Charlie was here now, I would not have said as much as I've said,
00:19 because after a sentence or two, Charlie would have taken over, would have commanded the room, would have had a big smile on all your face,
00:26 and would, with a tongue in his cheek, but a chuckle in his voice and a glint in his eye, he would have been telling you he was even better than I'm telling you how good he was.
00:37 A true legend of the game, a true legend not just of Sunderland, but of Ireland, his first club Millwall, not forgetting he finished his career at Boatwanderers.
00:47 A player that we're here to celebrate today, and we'll celebrate with 40-odd thousand people at the match this afternoon, who will all be here to pay the tribute to one of the greatest players ever, and Sunderland's greatest.
01:01 Here at the Charlie Hurley gates, a permanent reminder to us of Charlie at the Football Club, just like we have the Charlie Hurley suite in the stadium.
01:09 What a fantastic man, our pleasure to honour him, and thank you very much for listening.
01:15 [Applause]
