00:00 "The Royal Rumble was last night and as this video was being recorded before that happens
00:05 let me just cover my bases here.
00:07 Take 1.
00:08 Hey those two people won.
00:09 That's a bit predictable but they definitely both deserve title matches at WrestleMania.
00:14 Good for them.
00:15 Take 2.
00:16 Oh man those people won.
00:17 They don't even really work here anymore.
00:20 I'm gonna poo in a box and post it to myself to remind me to never dream.
00:24 Take 3.
00:25 I've been expecting Rhea Ripley to win both Royal Rumbles before having full sex with
00:30 Dominic Mysterio in the ring in front of everyone and no one was allowed to leave and it took
00:34 ages.
00:35 But hey at least it's a surprise.
00:37 There we go.
00:38 Every potential possibility done.
00:39 Now let's finish off our Royal Rumble coverage for the year by reminding you all that no
00:42 matter how last night went, it could have gone worse.
00:46 I'm Adam Hailing from PartsFarunknown and here are our 10 Worst Royal Rumble Matches
00:50 Ever.
00:51 Honorable mention?
00:53 Anything before 1992.
00:54 I mean first of all 1990 wasn't bad.
00:58 It had the Ultimate Warrior and Hulk Hogan moment.
01:00 That's pretty cool.
01:01 And to be honest you could throw in the first one in '88, 1989, 1991.
01:06 They could all go on this list because they're all a bit dull.
01:09 They hadn't fully figured out the format.
01:10 Hell the Rumble match wasn't even for a shot at the title at WrestleMania until 1993.
01:15 Pointing at old Rumbles and saying "bad cause old" doesn't really feel fair or interesting.
01:20 Not when there are equally bad Rumbles who are recent enough to also know better.
01:24 Like number 10, 2011.
01:26 Also known as the one with 40 people in it.
01:29 It was an experiment.
01:30 Did the experiment work?
01:32 It did.
01:33 And that's why every Royal Rumble since has had 40 people in it.
01:36 God imagine if that timeline was real.
01:38 Makes you realize we can always go darker.
01:39 However, it's not the worst Rumble ever.
01:42 It has some nice moments.
01:43 The Nexus stuff in the first half is fun.
01:46 Diesel and Booker T have fun returns.
01:48 The accidental Alex Riley elimination is unintentionally hilarious.
01:52 The Santino fake out really pops the crowd.
01:54 It's just way too long.
01:56 All the extra mid carders they stuff in there to pad it out to 40 people just makes the
02:00 high spots fewer and further apart.
02:02 Leading to some moments where the Royal Rumble is boring.
02:06 And that's one thing the Rumble should never be.
02:08 One thing the tried and true format is almost designed to avoid.
02:11 And that's what happens if you try and reinvent the wheel by gluing a smaller wheel onto it.
02:16 Number 9, 2019 men's.
02:18 What the hell happened in this Rumble?
02:20 It was 4 years ago and I can't remember anything from it other than Jeff Jarrett was in it.
02:27 Kurt Angle turned up for literally 3 minutes.
02:30 People took turns killing Nia Jax.
02:33 And then Seth won.
02:34 I can't remember any other spots than that.
02:36 What a strange featureless Rumble.
02:38 And absolutely the wrong match to main event the show considering that the women's match,
02:42 which wasn't that much better as a whole, at least got that humongous pop for Becky,
02:45 finally getting the Daniel Bryan treatment that Daniel Bryan never got.
02:48 As a whole it seemed like the gimmick for both Rumbles was "have a lot of NXT people
02:52 in them".
02:53 And while that's nice in theory and pretty much set the tone for 2019 as a year, it's
02:57 just a bunch more people who are never actually gonna win the thing.
02:59 I literally don't have anything more to say about it.
03:02 Plus before he won they gave Seth a 15 minute rest on the outside by having Lashley attack
03:06 him and that angle is almost always a bag of knobs.
03:08 Number 8, 1996.
03:10 This is a nothing match.
03:11 If 2019 is offensively bland, this is blandly offensive.
03:14 1995 and 1996 were WWE's worst business years in company history and you can tell it from
03:20 the roster.
03:21 Here's a list that's cheerfully titled "What the f*** are you doing here?
03:25 Doug Gilbert, Aldo Montoya, Squat Teamer 1, Squat Teamer 2, Takeo Omori, Karma, Hikushi,
03:33 Barry Horowitz.
03:34 Rough stuff there.
03:35 Supremely dull in lots of places.
03:38 It's also got one of the biggest continuity breaks in Rumble history.
03:41 Vader is eliminated, then comes in and eliminates a bunch of people, including eventual winner
03:45 Shawn Michaels, both feet touching the floor the whole nine yards.
03:49 In every other Rumble that's ever been, that's classed as heel shenanigans, sure.
03:53 But the elimination stands.
03:54 In this case, everyone that Vader eliminated gets to go back into the ring and carry on.
03:58 Fair?
03:59 Sure.
04:00 Absolutely not the way the Royal Rumble has ever worked since?
04:03 Also sure.
04:04 Number 7, the greatest Royal Rumble.
04:06 Tempest says it counts as a Royal Rumble, so my hands are tied.
04:10 And speaking of that, Saudi Arabia looked at the 40-man Royal Rumble and said, "Hold
04:14 my golden cup of journalist blood."
04:16 50 f***ing people they put into this set-out bulls*** Rumble, including all the tag teams
04:21 they could find.
04:22 Mike Kanellis, who they flew halfway around the world to be in the match for three literal
04:26 seconds.
04:27 Then you've got the who-the-hell-are-they's, like Dan Mather, Hiroki Sumi, and Babatunde
04:32 at the time.
04:33 It's got some standout moments.
04:34 Yes, Titus Worldslide was an instant meme, and maybe the only fun moment at work that
04:38 Michael Coles ever f***ing had.
04:40 Shane's table bump was ludicrous, and Daniel Bryan lost the entire match, which is insane
04:44 considering he came out of medically enforced retirement one month earlier.
04:49 It's so long.
04:51 It is too long.
04:53 And the good bits are buried under a crushing mass of corners, victors, and the all-pervading
04:57 stink of something being rotten in Denmark.
05:00 Number 6, 2022 men's.
05:03 Oh, f***.
05:04 F*** this match.
05:05 There are two things in the 2022 Royal Rumble that actually feel like Royal Rumble air quotes
05:10 moments close air quotes.
05:11 Johnny Knoxville shows up.
05:13 That's fun.
05:14 I also remember the year 2000.
05:15 I especially liked it when AJ thought, "I'm not pulling my punches for the jackass guy,"
05:20 and almost bloody killed him.
05:22 Bad Bunny then showed up, which was less fun because he appeared at the previous Rumble.
05:27 Between Knoxville and Bad Bunny's arrivals, there are 18 entrants over a half a f***ing
05:33 hour, and nothing happens except a moss.
05:37 And that was pretty s***.
05:39 It's absolutely maddening.
05:40 People come, people go, with all the urgency and character arc of an orange sat on a bin.
05:46 Remember when gassed up Mickey Mouse eliminated AJ Styles?
05:49 Remember when Brock Lesnar won the whole thing just two and a half minutes after entering?
05:53 Remember when Shane McMahon came f***ing third?
05:55 Honestly, by the time that Big E, the man who was WWE champion just 29 days earlier,
06:02 is eliminated after six minutes and after having eliminated no one, the match cements
06:06 itself as being a broken, joyless mess.
06:09 Number 5.
06:10 2014 Call me a fusty old stick in the mud, a so-called
06:14 city father who clucks my tongue, strokes my beard, and asks what is to be done with
06:19 his Homer Simpson, but I don't think anyone should win the Raw Rumble more than once.
06:23 Not Stone Cold, not Hulk Hogan, not John Cena, not even The Rock, and especially not skinny
06:27 jeans Batista, 80% of this Rumble is actually not terrible.
06:32 In fact, most of it is pretty good.
06:34 But even with the best and sexiest will in the world, you couldn't call a match that
06:37 ends in a five minute long boo good.
06:41 Everyone knew it was supposed to be Daniel Bryan's WrestleMania, no matter how many
06:44 galaxies Dave was guardian of.
06:46 And when Rey Mysterio came out at number 30, thereby sealing it, Daniel Bryan would not
06:50 even be in this Rumble and would not therefore be in the WrestleMania main event because
06:54 there was only one world title at the time the fans turned on this match and turned on
06:58 it hard.
06:59 So much so that man of the people Dave Batista told the people to go Drax himself after the
07:04 cameras stopped rolling.
07:05 And also Punk's underwhelming Iron Man performance was his last in WWE.
07:09 Do you remember that?
07:11 What's happened to him since?
07:13 Real shame that the match breaks right at the end, because the JBL stuff, Rusev stuff,
07:17 and Roman Reigns stuff, it's all good.
07:19 Oh well.
07:20 Number 4.
07:21 1993 Most of the Raw Rumble matches that made
07:24 it to this top five have one glaring flaw, something that breaks the match entirely and
07:29 reduces the whole thing to a disaster.
07:30 The 1993 Rumble doesn't really have one of those.
07:33 It's just f***ing boring.
07:36 Also the wrong winner doesn't always sink a Rumble, but bloody hell WWE, you passed
07:40 over Randy Savage vs Bret Hart in the main event of WrestleMania to promote the guy who
07:45 could barely move.
07:47 Everything that isn't endlessly dull in this match is outright bad.
07:50 Giant Godzilla stuff is bad.
07:52 Honestly, this would be the point where I list three bad things because comedy comes
07:56 in threes, but nothing else happens.
07:59 They bring out Macho Man at number 30, since 40 was too old by this point and wanted to
08:02 move him to commentary.
08:04 Taker is taken out by the immovable Porn Yeti after a few minutes, which means that the
08:07 only other major plausible name in the lion's share of the match is Ric Flair, who disappears
08:12 after 20 minutes in.
08:13 It is such a f***ing slug.
08:16 At least 40-year-old Bob Backlund's in the ring for an hour.
08:20 Why not?
08:21 At number three, 1999.
08:23 Vince Russo's whole gimmick is ruining wrestling matches to tell stories.
08:27 This is what he does, and honestly, sometimes that's fine.
08:30 Hell is Masterpiece, the 1998 Survivor Series, is a bunch of terrible wrestling matches that
08:35 all congeal into one super engaging story.
08:38 Sometimes it works.
08:39 At Royal Rumble 99, it does not.
08:42 The story of the match is that Eternal Best Frenemies Austin and Vince are numbers one
08:46 and two.
08:47 Vince loves Austin backstage.
08:48 Austin is murdered in the toilet.
08:50 Vince's top star is hospitalized and can't win the Rumble.
08:53 Some unclear steps.
08:54 Profit.
08:55 Austin then steals an ambulance, comes back, but thanks to The Rock, Vince still wins.
09:00 Like, all that vaguely works.
09:02 It makes sense, and clearly Vince liked it so much he did almost the exact same thing
09:06 in 2016 with Roman Reigns, but it ruins the Rumble match.
09:10 Barely anything else of note happens because the focus is never the actual wrestling itself.
09:15 The ring is just stuffed with endless mid-carders farting around doing little else or eliminating
09:21 themselves if you can.
09:23 All just spinning plates until Austin returns, all while commentary tend to ignore the match
09:28 and just ask, "Hey, where's Austin?
09:30 What's happening with the Austin?
09:32 Vince?
09:33 What's the deal?
09:34 When's Stone Cold coming back?"
09:35 An ambitious experiment, but one that creates a disjointed, dull, and often incredibly boring
09:40 Rumble.
09:41 Number two, 1995.
09:43 Man, Shawn Michaels has won some sh*t Royal Rumbles.
09:46 Talk about preferring to rule in hell than serve in heaven, only in this case, hell is
09:49 really poorly organized and full of people you don't recognize.
09:53 In the 1996 entry, we talked about the roster crisis that WWE was going through in the mid-90s,
09:58 all the gassed-up giants of the Hulkamania era abandoning shit for WCW or old age, or
10:03 both.
10:04 There were almost no stars in the 1995 Rumble, so they thought, "Sod it.
10:07 Let's just get it over with as quickly as possible," reducing the time between entries
10:11 to one minute.
10:13 Whatever happened next somehow managed to be both rushed and boring, as no-names Stephen
10:18 Dunne and Timothy Well, crap gimmicks like Mantor, Aldo Montoya, and the Godwins, and
10:23 notable racists like the Blue Brothers and Dick Murdoch all swarmed the ring way too
10:28 quickly to organize any meaningful spots and too unimportant to build any actual interest.
10:33 It is an outrageously bad Royal Rumble.
10:36 So often, the Rumble is an indication of WWE's health and prospects going into the calendar
10:41 year, so it is in 1995, when the company nearly died.
10:45 At number one, 2015.
10:48 When the Royal Rumble comes around, it's always an exciting time.
10:51 It's the most creatively fertile match of the year, a chance for the company to pay
10:55 off or advance multiple storylines, some dating back years, as well as spotlighting exciting
11:00 up-and-coming talent.
11:01 For me, though, the Rumble season comes with a curse, and at some point, I will have to
11:05 talk about the 2015 Royal Rumble for my job, and I hate doing that.
11:09 Not only is it a crisis point between fans and WWE, an all-time low moment of morale,
11:15 when it's made crystal clear that the amount of support fans give their favorite wrestler
11:19 amounts to both jack and s***, but it's also a really badly put-together match.
11:24 Even taking out the whole early elimination of Daniel Bryan poisoning the rest of the
11:28 Rumble, it's still a tone-deaf load of old bollocks.
11:30 Not only does Golden Boy Roman spend most of the match stuck in a corner until the end,
11:35 not only does he need help from his famous cousin to win the thing, but all the hot young
11:38 talent that fans were still behind - Bray Wyatt, Dolph Ziggler, Dean Ambrose - all were
11:42 immediately killed by Big Show and Kane.
11:46 Two outdated henchmen slowly and artlessly eliminating current stars, all to prop up
11:51 the unwanted coronation of the new John Cena.
11:53 Roman Reigns, a miscast reboot of an outdated booking strategy.
11:57 Honestly, the last 15 minutes of the 2015 Royal Rumble are, from the perspective of
12:02 wrestling as populist entertainment, some of the worst minutes in wrestling history.
12:07 Looking forward to finding new words to describe this match next year.
12:13 Good-o.
12:14 What makes a good Iron Man performance?
12:17 Well, ideally, they should be conventionally handsome, ideally with a slightly dark past
12:21 to reflect the character's own demons, look good in both a tailored suit and CGI suit,
12:25 they should be able to do a lot of good close-up face acting, little shots from inside the
12:29 helmet and yeah, I'm bored of this bit too.
12:31 A Royal Rumble Iron Man is a yearly...
