Greg Rutherford has opened up about his 'horribly painful' Dancing On Ice injury which left him two herniated disks and a torn ab.

Appearing on Wednesday's episode of Lorraine, the Olympian, 37, explained why he was forced missed the dancing final after the mishap.

The athlete revealed to the presenter that the incident was 'bizarre' and he was left on the ice for 10 minutes before he was moved.

Greg injured himself after he leapt through the legs of professional Colin Grafton, describing the injury as 'effectively giving himself a C-section'.

Detailing the exact moment it went 'horribly wrong', Greg explained: 'I had this absolute panicked look and the two pro's that were on the ice who were incredible, they straight away shouted for people to come and I couldn't move.'

He continued: 'It was one of the most bizarre things because it was all in the stomach and you then realise how much you use your stomach when it's damaged.

'I couldn't move, I couldn't do anything and I laid on the ice for 10 minutes with gas and air before they had to get me off.'

Responding to Lorraine asking how his health is now, Greg replied: 'I am a lot better thank-you.

'I had to have surgery to repair the injuries so I had some pretty nasty hernias form and I also detached my lower left ab which was less than ideal.

'It's a tough thing as well because mentally you have to get your head around it again as you've gone from doing this incredible show and you're in the limelight doing these incredible skates and all of a sudden you can't particularly move.'

Before he finished his chat with Lorraine he teased a return to the dancing competition.

He said: 'It's been early stage discussed whether or not I come back and do one skate maybe… I'd love to give it another go.

'It was something I didn't expect to enjoy as much as I did and that was the interesting thing for me.'

Greg initially kept quiet on the injury but updated his fans in April and revealed his scar.

Taking to Instagram, Greg showed how his scar is looking now after abdominal surgery as well the 'insane swelling' he experienced.

Alongside the snaps, he wrote: 'A little stomach update... I'm almost 4 weeks post op now and feeling so much better.

'I can move around with almost no feeling of pain and the wound has now closed and healed. Pic 2 shows the insane swelling I initially had.

'I can't tense my abs properly still, but that's coming. I also managed to put a ton of weight on since the op, so as soon as I'm ready I'll be training to get myself trim again… maybe even back on skates.'

Greg also revealed what his 'horrible' Dancing On Ice injury was as he headed into hospital to have surgery.

He told fans: 'Today is surgery day. Loads of people have been asking 'what happened?'

'I've been a bit busy and obviously just recovering from the initial injury before I had the surgery that I hadn't got round to talking about it.

'Long story short, I leapt through the legs of Colin and managed to tear all of my abs as well as herniate. So I effectively gave myself a C-section.

'So yes, it was horribly painful. It needs to be operated on today and then I'll be properly on the mend. It was very painful, pretty horrible.'

The Olympian was set to battle it all out against Ryan Thomas, Adele Roberts and Miles Nazaire for the trophy.

Ryan skated to victory and was crowned Dancing On Ice's 2024 winner alongside pro partner Amani Fancy during the live final.

Greg, meanwhile, shared a video of himself and Vanessa James doing the bolero as he lamented that he missed the final and was a 'bit heartbroken'.

He wrote: 'Something that I really wish I could have performed... #Bolero Im almost 36 hours since the injury and watching the videos of what could have been. It's bloody hard to take at this point as I know we could have shown something exciting and new with our final performances.

'Of course the Bolero isn't a given and I'll post our showcase at some point too... I haven't shown the end as I'm determined to actually perform it with Vanessa one day for everyone to see.

'I'm really proud of what we achieved on the show. This take was from Saturday morning and we were marking for the double twist... the full program was truly beautiful. I'm a bit heart broken at the moment.'
