Maisie Smith and Max George quickly shut down an awkward personal question as they opened up about their 'age gap' romance during their appearance on Lorraine on Monday.

The Wanted singer, 35, and former EastEnders star, 23, who met on Strictly Come Dancing in 2020, will play a married couple in Jeff Wayne's musical version of The War Of The Worlds, which will tour in 2025.

The duo talked to host Ranvir Singh about what it's like working together on stage and playing a husband and wife.

Explaining the concept, Max said: 'We're playing the parts of Nathaniel and his wife Beth. I basically lose my head because I think we're being invaded by aliens.'

Maisie jumped in to add: 'He thinks it's the devil and, me being the rational wife I am trying to convince him it's the Martians.'

Ranvir took the opportunity to jokingly ask: 'Is she the rational one in real-life Max?,' which was followed by an awkward silence before Maisie swiftly quipped: 'Can we skip that question? Moving on'.

The Wanted star couldn't help but laugh and interject with: 'Nah, she's mental'.

Another awkward moment in the interview saw Maisie and Max be quizzed about their thirteen-year 'age gap' - something they have faced criticism for in the past.

Addressing Max directly, Maisie said: 'I've always said from the start my family and your family - we're so close.

'Max has been there for me and my family while we've been going through some stuff.'

Referencing the age gap criticism, the singer quickly added: 'We're not bothered about stuff like that'.

Maisie moved in with Max early last year and the pair have been busy refurbishing their dream home ever since.

Speaking to The Sun on Sunday, Maisie previously spoke about her excitement about living with Max and dismissed concerns over their age gap.

She said: 'If it wasn't that, it would be something else. People don't understand what goes on behind closed doors in a relationship.

'I think they also forget that I'm a consenting [then] 21-year-old woman who's actually been working longer than Max! I don't notice the age difference and neither do my friends or family.'

The War Of The Worlds musical will be coming to 17 major UK arenas next March, and not-so coincidentally celebrating 130 years since the release of the original HG Wells novel.

It comes just after the couple previously revealed back in April that they have already ruled out working together again after a 'ropey' audition for THE major stage show.

The duo auditioned together as a couple, with Max joking during a Good Morning Britain interview: 'First time we've ever done that... probably the last! It was a bit ropey in parts, but in the end, we got there.

'We're buzzing! We can't wait, it's going to be so good!' He added: 'Honestly, we're so buzzing for it!'

The War of The Worlds team announced on social media: 'We are so thrilled to announce our first two cast members performing on The Spirit of Man Tour, 2025…

'For the first time in Martian history, a real-life couple will be performing as the married pair: The Wanted's @maxgeorge as Parson Nathaniel and @maisiesmithofficial as Beth.

Jeff then said: 'Being a couple in real life will add to their on-stage charisma and chemistry. Maisie has such a melodic but powerful voice, which compliments Max's dramatic and soulful vocals wonderfully.'
