The Scotland international only joined in the summer from Fulham for £12million but has been left out in recent weeks by manager Steve Bruce and last started for Villa on November 5 in the 2-1 win against Blackburn Rovers.
McCormack, who has scored two goals this season, is keen to establish himself in Bruce's plans but has had little cause for hope.
Bruce also has designs on bringing in another forward in January to help bolster their promotion push.
Should he fail to make an impression over the coming weeks, McCormack could find himself sacrificed to help offset the cost while teammate Rudy Gestede is a potential target for West Brom and Hull City.
SIMON JONES: Bolton Wanderers' highly-rated forward Zach Clough is drawing attention from Championship and Premier League clubs ahead of the January window.
Clough, who starred for Bolton in Sunday's 3-2 FA Cup win over Sheffield United, has scored seven goals this season, including the recent winners against Coventry and Northampton.
His form has impressed scouts and the right offer could tempt cash-conscious Bolton into a sale.

Reports in Chile suggested that Guardiola personally phoned the Arsenal striker over the weekend.

'Absolutely false. The journalist is a liar,' Guardiola said. 'Alexis Sanchez would fit in any team in the world. The journalist is a liar.'
'Dave Edwards has pledged his future to Molineux by signing a new two-and-a-half year contract, with a further year’s option in the club’s favour,' Wolves wrote on their website.

Shanghai Shenhua president Wu Xiaohui told Shenhua News that significant progress has been made with regards to a potential deal for Boca Juniors forward Carlos Tevez.
'We have done a lot of work [on trying to sign Tevez] and it's safe to say that there has been a definite breakthrough in the negotiations,' He revealed. 'But for a variety of reasons we have not sealed the deal.
'Their club have problems that are still yet to be resolved and I will spare you the details.
'We will continue to put greater effort into this and strive to give our supporters a pleasant surprise as soon as possible.'
