Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Melbourne weather: Storm warning issued

Aussies are being warned to brace for a week of storms, hail, and damaging winds, but Sydney and Brisbane are expected to escape the worst of the wild weather.

Destructive wind gusts have already hit southern Western Australia and Victoria, and are expected to reach southeastern states, including NSW and Tasmania, on Monday.

Parts of the Illawarra, south coast, Goulburn and Katoomba can expect damaging wind gusts in excess of 90km/h until Monday afternoon.

Nowra, Bowral, Braidwood, Goulburn and Selwyn could also get a lashing.

'This week will have very strong winds as well as alpine snow,' explained Weatherzone meteorologist Yoska Hernanvez.

'The winds are going to be the strongest over southern South Australia, Victoria, south-eastern NSW and Tasmania on Tuesday and into Wednesday.

'The winds will possibly exceed 100km along the coast of Victoria,' she said.

The SES has warned people in affected areas to move vehicles to cover or away from trees, secure loose items around the house, avoid fallen power lines, and be aware that bushfires may have weakened trees.

Northern parts of the country will remain warm, with Brisbane likely to on track for its hottest August day on Saturday, when temperatures are expected to hit 34C.

Sydney will enjoy sunny weather throughout the week, with temperatures forecasted to reach 28C on Wednesday.
