Dreaming in denim
What would we do without denim?
This practical material, originally used for workwear, is such a wardrobe staple we can't imagine life without it.
From jeans to shorts and shirts to skirts, there's not an item of clothing that doesn't benefit from being recreated in denim. Even denim bikinis have a place in our hearts.
And this season the denim trends are better than ever...
L-R: River Island Mid-Rise Straight Jeans, £38 at Very and V by Very Denim Maxi Skirt, £35
You know that feeling when you find the perfect pair of jeans? It almost feels life-changing.
Well this pair of mid-rise, straight jeans by River Island (above left) could be the ones. The trend for straight leg denim has been around for a while, replacing skinnies as THE jeans to be seen in.
In 100% cotton, these beauties will keep their shape and can be dressed up or down with ease.
Or base your look around another huge trend that's made its way back from the early 2000s - the denim maxi skirt. V by Very's take (above right) has a cool raw hem and a figure-hugging fit and thanks to added stretch will move with you, not against you.
L-R: Barbour Macy Denim Overshirt, £129 at Very and V by Very Denim Waistcoat, £28
Spring days mean we can say goodbye to our heavy winter coats, wearing lighter jackets instead. And this belted longline denim jacket by Barbour International (above left) is the dream. This slightly retro look is everywhere right now and this jacket will work over fine knits and tees and is perfect for festival season too.
And another denim piece to add to your festival wardrobe is this waistcoat by V by Very (above right). It'll look amazing with cut off shorts!
Mango Oversized Denim Gilet, £36 and Mango One-piece Suit, £60 at Very
Or take the sleeveless top trend and make it oversized with this 1980s-inspired denim gilet by Mango (above left). A look seen on lots of designer catwalks, we'll be layering it over jumpers, long sleeve tees and blouses.
And for a night out with the girls, this strapless denim jumpsuit (above right) is fantastic. Super sexy but with edge, it's the perfect combination of laid back and dressed up. Rock it with heels and plenty of attitude.
Sharp tailoring
There's something innately cool about a woman wearing a trouser suit.
Boyish tailoring always looks incredible and the key to keep it modern and not too 'power suit' is to embrace a slightly larger cut.
L-R: V by Very Tailored Double Breasted Blazer, £55 and V by Very Tailored Wide Leg Trouser, £35
That's one of the reasons we love this suit by V by Very. The double-breasted blazer (above left) is roomy enough to fit a sweater underneath and the trousers (above right) have a flattering wide leg, while the minty fresh colour is ideal for springtime. Wear with boxfresh trainers to complete the look.
L-R: V by Very Long Sleeve Cotton Poplin Stripe Shirt, £25 and Fig & Basil Cross Hatch Trousers, £35 at Very
When building a capsule wardrobe we highly recommend investing in a well cut pinstripe shirt like this one (above left). And in the spirit of borrowing from the boys, buy it a couple of sizes too big, imagining you've woken up at your boyfriend's place and have insouciantly pulled on one of his shirts. Ultra-chic.
And why not half-tuck it into these sleek high waist trousers by Fig & Basil (above right)? That asymmetric fastening is a real stand out detail and we guarantee you'll be reaching for these all year long.
Light knits
We love a thick chunky knit as much as anyone but when the time comes to pack them away until winter, we're always more than ready.
And what do we wear in their place? Light, fine knits that keep out the chill but which don't leave us boiling on our commute. They're also super simple to style, so what's not to love?
L-R: V by Very Stripe Crew Neck Knitted Jumper, £22 and V by Very Slim Knit Rainbow Knitted Top, £35
We'll be stocking up this season, starting with these two striped beauties by V by Very. This ribbed green and white stripe knit (above left) is fresh as a daisy and we love those flared cuffs, while this multi-coloured ribbed top is as cheerful as a rainbow.
For a touch of sleek elegance try this navy knit by Fig & Basil (below left). The V-neck and split hem work to accentuate the waist and it's one of those tops that'll take you from your desk to dinner with just a change of jewellery.
Or work a Saint-Tropez meets Upper East Side aesthetic with Mango's very sophisticated contrast trim cardigan (below right). Wear buttoned up and tucked into high waist trousers or leave the bottom buttons undone and style it with a leather midi skirt. Either way you'll look perfectly put together.
L-R: Fig & Basil V Neck Split Hem Knitted Top, £28 and Mango Cardigan, £30 at Very
Dresses to die for
Whether you're heading to a wedding, planning a family party, need a new look for a job interview or are shopping for a summer holiday, sometimes only a dress will do.
And at Very you'll find minis, midi and maxis for every occasion, so finding the perfect look is a breeze.
Barbour Kelburn Cotton Midi Dress, £159 at Very and V by Very Twist Mono Crochet Midaxi Dress, £28
This very pretty and versatile midi by Barbour International (above left) is the absolute dream for picnics in the park, sunny day brunches and for bringing a slice of carefree romance to your wardrobe. Wear with leather sandals or a pair of raffia wedges to complete the look.
Or combine the beachiness of crochet with the sexiness of bodycon with this bandeau midi (above right). It'll look fantastic on your next date night and don't forget to pack it in your suitcase this summer.
