Apple Let Loose Event:Apple’s Safari web browser will learn a few new tricks across Apple devices, including web page highlights and summaries, as well as better-integrated control of videos online, the iPhone giant pointed out Monday in its Safari updates at WWDC24 section of the Keynote.

“In this release, we’re making it even better with easier ways to discover content and streamline your browsing. When you’re on a site Safari can now help you discover more about the page with highlights,” said Beth Dakin, Apple’s senior manager, Safari Software Engineering.

Safari updates at WWDC14 focus on website summaries and highlights

While plenty of Apple uses like alternative browsers such as Chrome despite Safari’s speed and privacy enhancements in recent years, Cupertino gave them new reasons to switch back Monday at WWDC24. With iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS 15, the Safari web browser will see more features along the lines of quick recaps of articles and whole web pages, in addition to new ways to interact with online videos.

What’s new in Safari:

  • Safari can now help you discover more about a website with highlights. Safari uses machine learning to automatically detect relevant information and highlight it for you as you browse.
  • Highlights share helpful information like directions, summaries and quick links to learn more about people, music, movies and TV shows.
  • Summaries are also integrated into a redesigned Reader. It removes distractions from articles, provides a table of contents and includes a helpful summary right next to the article.
  • And when Safari detects a video on the page, a viewer helps you put it front and center while allowing full access to system playback controls like Airplay and picture-in-picture.
