The iPad software upgrade expected to be unveiled Monday will improve the way users work with multiple on-screen applications, according to a last-minute report from a reliable source. iPadOS 15 also will include widget improvements and other changes.
Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference kicks off Monday, June 7, and these iPad software enhancements are expected to be announced. Plus, CEO Tim Cook and company are likely to unveil iOS 15, macOS 12 and other operating system updates at WWDC 2021.
Better multitasking in iPadOS 15
Apple tablets gained the ability to display multiple applications simultaneously in 2015. However, Apple will revamp the iPad’s clunky multitasking system, according to Bloomberg. iPad will get “an improved multitasking system to make it easier to operate multiple apps at the same time,” wrote Mark Gurman, who did not provide additional details.
iPadOS is currently limited to two viewable applications at once, with Slide Over allowing a third to temporarily float above them. A concept artist suggested a new multitasking option with three apps in view at once.

But Gurman’s report indicates that Apple will improve the way users multitask on iPad, not add additional features. The current system often faces criticized due to its unintuitive nature.
More iPad changes expected
Widgets for iPad debuted at WWDC 2019, and iPadOS 15 supposedly will allow users to place them anywhere on the Home screen. Currently, Apple limits widgets to the iPad’s left edge. Widgets also allegedly will become more interactive, allowing a user to, for example, start and stop music playback.
In addition, iPad users should benefit from changes also coming to iOS 15. Unconfirmed reports point to new controls for when notifications arrive, and a privacy feature that tracks the information third-party applications gather about users.
iPadOS might bring other big changes as well. Apple did an unusually thorough job of blocking pre-WWDC leaks this year.
