As bombs rain down on London during World War II, a mother sends her young son to safety in the countryside — only to learn he’s actually lost in the city’s fiery mayhem. His journey and her frantic search unfold in a new trailer dropped Thursday for new Apple Original Film Blitz, written and directed by Academy Award winner Sir Steve McQueen.

Saoirse Ronan stars as the mother in desperate search for her son in the film, set to premiere in theaters November 1 and stream on Apple TV+ November 22. Watch the trailer below.

Blitz trailer tells a touching human story amid the horrors of bomb-battered WWII London

“A boy’s journey. A mother’s love. Miles of burning city between them.” That’s the tagline for Blitz, which looks epic. It might deliver a satisfying mix of action, emotion and history lesson. The trailer combines scenes of horrible London destruction wrought by Luftwaffe bombers intermixed with imagery of regular people trying to go about about their lives. City blocks explode. Couples dance with abandon to jazz bands. And, unfortunately, a little boy runs around by himself, dodging bombs to try and get home.

The boy’s dangerous journey arose amid the carnage when his mother, Rita (Ronin), sent him to the countryside for his safety. But he defiantly decided to return home to East London on his own. And of course that endangered his life and sparked a frantic search in the embattled city. Many of the trailer’s scenes take place at night, lit by fire.

Here’s the streamer’s description of the plot and cast:

Sir Steve McQueen’s Blitz follows the epic journey of George (Elliott Heffernan), a 9-year-old boy in World War II London whose mother Rita sends him to safety in the English countryside. George, defiant and determined to return home to his mom and his grandfather Gerald (Paul Weller) in East London, embarks on an adventure, only to find himself in immense peril, while a distraught Rita searches for her missing son.

Written and directed by Academy and BAFTA Award-winning McQueen, the film stars Academy and BAFTA Award nominee Ronan and newcomer Heffernan, with Harris Dickinson, Benjamin Clementine, Kathy Burke, Paul Weller, Stephen Graham, Leigh Gill, Mica Ricketts, CJ Beckford, Alex Jennings, Joshua McGuire, Hayley Squires, Erin Kellyman and Sally Messham rounding out the cast.

McQueen’s Lammas Park produced the film alongside Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner of Working Title Films, Arnon Milchan, Yariv Milchan and Michael Schaefer for New Regency, with producers Anita Overland and Adam Somner, Apple TV+ said.

McQueen reunited with prominent collaborators to work on the movie. They include production designer Adam Stockhausen (12 Years a Slave, Widows), costume designer Jacqueline Durran (Small Axe), and composer Hans Zimmer (12 Years a Slave), with cinematographer Yorick Le Saux (Little Women) and makeup designer Naomi Donne (Spectre, Skyfall).
