iOS 18 reportedly will let iPhone users change app icon colors on the Home Screen. Plus, they would be able to put the icons anywhere they want.
Since iOS’ inception, app icons on iPhone’s Home Screen have snapped to a grid, much to the dismay of some users. However, Apple could finally tweak this behavior with iOS 18.
Major iPhone Home Screen customization improvements incoming
With iOS 14’s release in 2020, Apple introduced Home Screen widgets and the App Library on iPhone. While welcome, iPhone users still could not place app icons anywhere they wanted or tweak how the icons themselves looked.
In the latest edition of the Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says Apple will revamp this iPhone Home Screen behavior. He thinks users will be able to “change the color of app icons and put them wherever they want. For instance, you can make all your social icons blue or finance-related ones green — and they won’t need to be placed in the standard grid that has existed since day one in 2007.”
A previous report from a different source also predicted iOS 18 would introduce a more customizable iPhone Home Screen.
iOS 18 is shaping up to be a big upgrade
You can use custom icons on your iPhone Home Screen. But the process is tedious and convoluted. While changing the app icon color won’t be the same as changing their look, it would still be a welcome improvement. Plus, Apple’s implementation should be a lot easier to use. The company is unlikely to provide an option to change the app icon entirely, though.
Besides all the rumored AI features, the new Home Screen customization features should be one of the most notable addition to iOS 18. Thankfully, we won’t have to wait long to know more about the big changes coming to iPhone. Apple will hold WWDC24 two weeks from now, starting with a keynote on June 10.
