A clean-up process has been underway after a group of travellers vacated a field in Cornwall leaving hoards of rubbish and human faeces in their wake.

A group of between 20 and 30 caravans were located on the Tregurra Park and Ride on the outskirts of Truro until they vacated at around 9.30pm on Tuesday (July 9) and moved to Tremorvah Playing Fields, just over a mile away in a residential area of the city next to the magistrates' court.

Richard Budge, the head of parks services at Truro City Council, said it had been working with Cornwall Council and Devon and Cornwall Police on ways to resolve the situation. since. The city council later confirmed it served an eviction notice on the travellers.

Mr Budge said his services had received many emails and messages from concerned residents over the presence of the travellers at the playing field. However, he insisted there had been no issues or problems with them and no damage or vandalism had been reported at the site.

But having now vacated the second location at the weekend, several workers believed to be from Cormac or BIFFA - the council's waste contractor - were seen in action clearing up the vast mess left behind on Sunday (July 14) afternoon. A resident said it was so bad workers thought they might have to return on Monday morning to complete the job.

He said: "Cormac are on the case and are picking up the litter and human faeces off of Tremorvah Playing Field. It might have to be finished off on Monday."

Among rubbish and faeces, several piles of branches and wood were also abandoned. He speculated that the travellers may have carried out hedge trimming work for a household while here and dumped it instead of disposing of it properly.

He continued: "The Tesco trolley picture is the rubbish I collected before BIFFA arrived. One full bin liner of soiled nappies and toilet paper.

"The rest was rubbish dumped by one caravan. The area immediately outside my back gate had over 20 piles of human faeces. With BIFFA not due until today, I picked it up before the rain-soaked it into the soil."
