Adding another activity to tick off on your New York itinerary, the newly-opened Statue of Liberty Museum is now open to the public. Sprawling over nearly 26,000sq ft, it boasts the statue's original torch and has a whole host of interactive experiences for visitors.

While you're there, you can share your ideas about freedom and liberty for a digital collage on the main wall, watch a seven-minute film that encapsulates the history of the statue built by sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi.  However, the real highlight is Lady Liberty's original torch that weighs 1,633kgs installed in an atrium flooded with light that overlooks Manhattan's stunning skyline. The torch was replaced in 1985 when it was damaged by an explosion planted by German spies. The one on display now is a gold-plated replacement.

The exhibition space sees nearly 4.5 million visitors annually who trek to Liberty Island to see the towering 151ft statue, which is New York's most famous attraction. The museum is a result of several crowdsourcing campaigns that raised $100 million to build the space, which is open after being in the works for five years.

Tickets that combine trips to Liberty Island and Ellis Island cost $9 (Rs630) for children and $13.50 (Rs935) for adults. However, if you can't fly down to New York, all you have to do is download the Statue of Liberty app. Using augmented reality, it brings to life a time-lapse view from the Statue's eyes and gives you a peek into the structure and archived photos.
