Lot Essay

Further research has revealed that this necklace was commissioned in 1939 from Koch, probably by the Bismark family, using antique elements. The original design depicts a longer necklace with seven early-late 19th century sapphire and diamond clusters suspending a similar drop from an oval diamond link necklace with quatrefoil cluster spacers. In 1982 Christie's New York offered the necklace for sale (lot 346, October 1982) by which time two sapphire and diamond clusters had already been removed. Today, the necklace consists of three sapphire and diamond clusters suspending a further drop with a later sympathetically designed backchain.
