Since the creation of Glen Allen High School, the 600’s fine arts hallway has been a showcase for senior murals. These murals have been a tradition for senior art students to leave their "mark" upon the school as well as share their creativity and talent. Students, teachers, family members and the Glen Allen community have enjoyed these ambitious and breathtaking works of artistry. For years the issue of extending space through the rest of the 600’s wing has come up by students, but this request has been continually rejected by administration. It is especially important this year because the majority of existing murals will have to be painted over. This is unfair to current students who have to choose which murals to cover and disrespectful to previous artists who spent years taking art classes to reach the opportunity to paint the walls. The time and effort spent by previous artists in painting their murals means so much more than what is on the walls. The process that an artist has to take in creating such an extensive piece of art is tremendous, and the meaning of that piece to the artist is greater.  

            The art murals are the ultimate source of achievement to which a senior high school artist aspires. They allow the opportunity for our artists to express themselves and have a voice. The senior art project provides them the drive and motivation to continue art classes so that they can reach this culminating project. The murals represent the school in so many ways; they have become a part of our culture. These projects have become an important vehicle for cultural expression for our student body and staff.  

            The issue at hand is the availability of wall space. The arts hall is the current space where murals are placed, but only a part of it is approved for use, leaving the rest completely blank and unavailable. 

            Please support our cause in opening up the rest of the GAHS 600 hallway or provide additional hallway space so that students are not forced to cover up other artists’ works. Please help to foster the amazing creativity of the Glen Allen High School visual arts program.
