  • Predators' Matt Murray: Reassigned to AHL

Murray was returned to AHL Milwaukee on Friday.

The Predators required a back up for Scott Wedgewood on Wednesday as Juuse Saros was unable to dress due to a lower-body injury. The Predators play Saturday in Detroit and if Saros is still unable to play, look for Murray to be recalled once again.

  • Predators' Luke Evangelista: Garners assist

Evangelista produced an assist in Thursday's 4-3 loss to the Stars.

Evangelista set up Thomas Novak's third-period tally. The 22-year-old Evangelista is on the third line to start 2024-25, and barring injuries, he looks to have little chance of attaining steady top-six minutes. The 22-year-old forward produced 39 points, 172 shots on net and 10 power-play points over 80 regular-season games in his first full campaign in 2023-24. He's too skilled to be a traditional third-liner, but with ice time hard to find, there may not be much growth in his offense this season.

  • Predators' Roman Josi: Helps out on power play

Josi registered a power-play assist, four shots on goal and two blocked shots in Thursday's 4-3 loss to the Stars.

Josi had the secondary helper on a Filip Forsberg tally in the second period. Last year, Josi finished above a point-per-game pace for the second time in three years, producing 23 goals, 62 assists and 33 power-play points over 82 regular-season contests. The 34-year-old defenseman played 29:07 in Thursday's season-opening loss, over 10 minutes more than the next closest Nashville blueliner (Brady Skjei, 19:00). Josi figures to see heavy usage in all situations, and outside of hits, he should be a steady fantasy contributor across the board.

  • Predators' Jonathan Marchessault: Supplies two helpers in loss

Marchessault recorded two assists, six shots on goal and two PIM in Thursday's 4-3 loss to the Stars.

Of the Predators' three big free-agent signings, Marchessault had the most successful team debut. He set up a power-play goal by Filip Forsberg in the second period and also found Ryan O'Reilly for an extra-attacker tally in the third. Marchessault produced 42 goals and 69 points over 82 regular-season games with Vegas last year, his third season above the 60-point mark. The 33-year-old winger is a lock for top-six minutes and time on the first power-play unit in his first year with Nashville, and he should be a productive option for goals, shots and hits in particular.

  • Predators' Ryan O'Reilly: Deposits goal in loss

O'Reilly scored a goal in Thursday's 4-3 loss to the Stars.

O'Reilly tallied with the extra attacker on the ice at 18:25 of the third period, but the Predators' comeback attempt fell short. Last season, O'Reilly had 26 goals and 43 assists in 82 regular-season contests, leading to his highest point total (69) since 2018-19. The 33-year-old is more of a playmaker typically, and he'll have strong fantasy value in formats that focus on offense and those that count faceoff wins.

  • Predators' Thomas Novak: Scores in Thursday's loss

Novak scored a goal on two shots in Thursday's 4-3 loss to the Stars.

Novak began the game on the second line, but his goal came early in the third period when he switched places with Colton Sissons. The 27-year-old Novak has the talent to be a top-six forward, but he'll have to be consistent to keep that role this season. He put up 45 points, 113 shots on net and a minus-3 rating in 71 regular-season outings last year, and his fantasy value relies exclusively on offense since he adds almost no physical play.

  • Predators' Filip Forsberg: One of each in loss

Forsberg scored a power-play goal on four shots, added an assist, logged four hits and blocked two shots in Thursday's 4-3 loss to the Stars.

Forsberg got the Predators on the board in the second period and added a helper on Thomas Novak's third-period marker. Nashville remodeled its forward group this offseason, but Forsberg could still be the best scorer on the team. The 30-year-old winger put up a career-high 48 goals and 94 points in 82 regular-season outings last year, and that was with a slightly elevated but reasonable 13.8 shooting percentage.

  • Predators' Scott Wedgewood: Loses to former team

Wedgewood surrendered four goals on 20 shots in Thursday's 4-3 loss to the Stars.

While the Predators' new-look offense controlled play pretty well, the Stars were opportunistic against their former teammate, striking four times in the second period. Wedgewood got the Opening Night assignment because Juuse Saros (lower body) was unavailable. Depending on the length of Saros' absence, Wedgewood may have some short-term fantasy appeal, but he was roughly average last season with a 16-7-5 record, 2.85 GAA and .899 save percentage over 32 appearances.

  • Predators' Juuse Saros: Not suiting up Thursday

Saros (lower body) won't suit up in Thursday's season opener versus the Stars, Nick Kieser of 102.5 ESPN Nashville reports.

Saros is battling what's believed to be a short-term injury. The Predators will have Scott Wedgewood between the pipes and Matt Murray serving as backup for Thursday's contest, with both goalies in the lineup against their former team. Saros' next chance to play is Saturday in Detroit.

  • Predators' Scott Wedgewood: Starting against Dallas

Wedgewood was the first goalie off Thursday, Emma Lingan of The Hockey News reports, indicating he'll be in the home crease against Dallas.

Since Juuse Saros (lower body) is hurt, Wedgewood will draw the Opening Night start against his former team. Over 32 regular-season appearances with the Stars last year, he posted a 16-7-5 record, 2.85 GAA and .899 save percentage. Saros should take over as the clear No. 1 option at goaltender once he's healthy.

  • Predators' Juuse Saros: Questionable for Thursday

Saros is dealing with a lower-body injury and is questionable for Thursday's home game against Dallas, per Robby Stanley of NHL.com on Wednesday.

Given that Saros hasn't been ruled out for the upcoming contest yet, his injury might not be major. The 29-year-old had an inconsistent 2023-24 regular season, posting a 2.86 GAA and a .906 save percentage in 64 games, but he had an incredible 14-2-2, 2.25 GAA and .924 save percentage from Feb. 17-April 7, which played a key role in Nashville making the playoffs. Some rough patches last season aside, he's typically been a vital part of the Predators and figures to be so again in 2024-25. If he's not available Thursday, though, then Scott Wedgewood might start while Matt Murray, who was recalled from AHL Milwaukee on Wednesday, is projected to be the backup netminder.

  • Predators' Matt Murray: Recalled by Nashville

Murray was recalled from AHL Milwaukee on Wednesday.

Murray was sent to the AHL in late September, but he'll rejoin the Predators ahead of Opening Night against Dallas on Thursday. However, it seems unlikely that he'll see much, if any, time in net for the NHL club early in the season.

  • Predators' Spencer Stastney: Designated to non-roster list

Stastney (personal) was placed on the injured non-roster list Monday.

Stastney was absent from training camp for personal reasons. It's unclear when he will be ready to return. Stastney had five goals and 20 points in 44 games with AHL Milwaukee during the 2023-24 regular season. He also posted two goals and two assists in 20 appearances with the Predators last campaign before suiting up in three playoff contests.

  • Predators' Juuse Saros: Preseason matchup canceled

Saros and the Predators will not travel to face the Lightning after Monday's preseason game was canceled due to Hurricane Milton.

Saros wasn't expected to feature in this contest to begin with, as it was a scheduled final tune-up for Scott Wedgewood. With the game canceled, the veteran Saros will look to Thursday's Opening Night matchup with Dallas. Even with a steady backup in Wedgewood, Saros could still be among the league leaders in games played this season, making him an elite fantasy target.

  • Predators' Marc Del Gaizo: Waived by Nashville

Del Gaizo was placed on waivers by the Predators on Sunday, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.

Del Gaizo appeared in nine NHL games for Nashville last year, logging three points and 10 blocked shots while averaging 16:28 of ice time. He'll likely spend most of this season in the AHL.

  • Predators' Thomas Novak: Carries offense in preseason loss

Novak scored a goal and added two assists, one on the power play, in Saturday's preseason loss to the Hurricanes.

The 27-year-old center had a hand in every Nashville goal in a 5-3 loss, helping to set up Mark Jankowski with the man advantage in the first period and Cole Smith at even strength in the second before potting his own tally in the final stanza. Novak seems set in a top-six role, and while he may not see many shifts on the first power-play unit, he could see a lot of even-strength ice time alongside new teammates Steven Stamkos and Jonathan Marchessault. Novak set career highs with 18 goals and 45 points in 2023-24, but he could be poised to blow past those numbers given the talent upgrade around him.

  • Predators' Juuse Saros: Perfect in final tuneup

Saros turned aside all 12 shots he faced during Saturday's preseason loss to the Hurricanes.

In Nashville's final preseason game, Saros was on the ice for just the first period before being replaced by Scott Wedgewood. Saros has played at least 64 regular-season games and collected at least 33 wins in each of the last three seasons, delivering a 2.73 GAA and .915 save percentage over that stretch. With an eight-year contract extension in his pocket, the 29-year-old netminder should be plenty busy again in 2024-25.
