Meet Adelphi University senior Katie Goz, and get to know about all the fun things she tends to do as a student on summer break!
Hi there! I am Katie Goz, a soon-to-be senior at Adelphi University, where I am currently a student in their BFA Acting program. Adelphi University is located on Long Island NY, a place where I have called home for my entire life. Having been born and raised on Long Island, getting to seek higher education here has been very interesting, and dare I say quite thrilling. It has also allowed me to have a greater connection with my school, as well as preparing me for what I hope to accomplish in the years following my graduation next May (ahh!!). Having the opportunity to live on campus and have that college experience, while also having home an hour away has served me well in balancing my needs…sometimes you just crave a home cooked meal! And for the reverse, a trip into Manhattan is only a thirty minute train ride. It is truly the best of both worlds. Funny enough, I even tend to find my way back to Adelphi during the summer months on occasion.
That leads me into…what I am up to this summer! I am so lucky to be currently doing an internship at my own school, in collaboration with NYTW (New York Theatre Workshop). This is my second summer doing the internship, and it is such a blast to be doing it this year as well. The internship at NYTW helps challenge me creatively through acting, writing, directing, carrying my education of all things theatre into the summer months. Perhaps I will talk about my experience more in a future blog post!
While I am not taking any other courses this summer, I am using this time off to continue my writing. As a new playwright, I am overwhelmed by the amount of ideas I have, as there are so many worlds I want to explore. When I often have a random thought, I usually write it down in my notes app on my phone. And when it comes to sitting down at my computer to write, I have multiple jumping off points! Some of my recent works include a ten-minute play called Tutor Time, which was featured in Adelphi’s New Works Festival in May! Another recent work I am most proud of is my one act Ghosted, which dives into the realm of girlhood, growing up with social media, and AI technology.
This summer I am also trying to read more plays, to potentially find new auditioning material, more inspiration to write, or to just simply enjoy some great works! Two plays I have read so far this summer include Euridyce by Sarah Ruhl and Fat Ham by James Ijames. Next up on my reading list are Is God Is by Aleshea Harris and Belleville by Amy Herzog. If you have any suggestions, please send them my way!
The summer is just beginning, and I am absolutely ecstatic to blog about all things a BFA college student has to offer! It is only June, and there are so many things I want to discuss and write about. Let’s make my last summer as an undergraduate student the best one yet!
