A number of safety tests are performed on animals, prior to clinical trials in humans, in order to select the most suitable lead chemical and dosage form for drug development. The safety tests can include studies of acute toxicity, subacute and chronic toxicity, carcinogenicity, reproductive and developmental toxicity, and mutagenicity. In acute toxicity studies, a single large or potentially toxic dose of the drug is administered to animals via the intended route of human administration, and the animals are observed for one to four weeks, depending on the drug.
