Home to one of America’s icons – the Golden Gate Bridge – San Francisco is a liberal city where life is very much for the living.
Surrounded by water on 3 sides, the city's spread over steep hills that make for great photo ops. And none better than the zig-zag Lombard Street, seen in many a film. Even more famous are San Fran's iconic trolleys climbing the hills – a little touristy, but still worth a ride.
In the middle of the bay, Alcatraz island is known for the notorious criminals once imprisoned there. Even if you don’t go inside, the views of the bridge and city are unparalleled.
Nowhere is life in San Francisco more laid-back than on the Pacific beaches. Rent a bike and head out there, passing through the huge Golden Gate Park, before returning to sample some fresh seafood at Fisherman’s Wharf. Don't miss the clam chowder served in bread bowls! Chinatown also has a great selection of mid-range restaurants.
As you fly into San Francisco Airport, look out for the exclusive homes lining the Bay Area. Whether you want a more independent stay in apartments, luxury San Francisco hotels or cheap hostels, Booking.com has something for everyone. Be careful though – you might just leave your heart here!

San Francisco at Christmas is always fun except one needs to be city smart about where you are as there were homeless south of Market. Also please donate to shelters not to the individuals . Always try to get a view of the scenery as it is always special.

The views were extraordinary!!
The views were extraordinary!! Nob hill is full of wonderful sceneries like the hills down California street and the Great Cathedral. Hills at Lombard street and the crookedest streets in the world. The buildings at the financial district is awe inspiring. The golden gate bridge, and the scrumptious delicious foods at the china town are to name a few. We took the cable car, buses for $2.50, one way after $5 one stop being charged to ride the bus on the same day. Hiking around town and exercising at the planet fitness center every day was the most fun activity for us.

San Francisco has so many faces that always come through with allure and charm, truth and beauty, architecture, food, entertainment, encouragement, a slice of life to experience and survive in the tender spots, history, and even elusive parrots. We get a Clipper card for the muni and use the opportunity to sightsee rather than drive our car and spend time and cash finding parking.

Staying by Fisherman's Wharf is more expensive, but totally worth it. You can walk almost anywhere: Wharf, Ghirardelli Square, cable car, great for a morning walk along the coast. If you have kids, there is a fantastic arcade museum down at the wharf with some really old games and some newer ones. The whole family enjoyed that - $20 worth of quarters buys a lot of fun. We took the driverless taxi (Waymo) to the Golden Gate Bridge, and that was quite a hoot. Adults and kids alike enjoyed that ride. Get to the cable car when they first open otherwise you'll be spending too much time in line later in the day and evening. Plan for at least 4-6 hours at Alcatraz. We only saw about half in 4 hours (from the time we boarded the ferry).

We only had the day after Thanksgiving this time so we took a bus to SFMOMA for a photography exhibit.
MOMA is worth much longer to really explore but we did not have time this visit. Took a bus to the De Young Museum in Golden Gate Park, enjoyed an amazing exhibit of huge tapestries from the 14th century. The De Young has such beautiful collections that they rotate and update frequently.
Took bus back to the Marina district and our hotel. Had dinner and shopped a bit on Chestnut Street at a favorite book store.

Great and have booked a 2nd stay!
A historical family-owned hotel on a perfectly safe Union Square and in the heart of downtown San Francisco where stores and restaurants are in abundance.
If you're doing the Hop on/off bus, the bus leaves from just 100ft down the street.
While small, the rooms are super cosy and comfortable and beautifully furnished.
A bar in the lobby provides a free assortment of tea/coffee as well as free cookies.
All-in-all, a wonderful hotel to stay with during your time on Union Square.
We had a short 3-day stay in San Francisco and enjoyed our time at the Handlery Union Square Hotel. The bed was comfortable. There was a small fridge were we could store some items.
Clean room and refreshed every day. We had some benefits at a nearby diner as thanks for being a Handlery guest.
The Hotel is on the margins of Union Square, which in itself is safe. A bit of caution needed when going a few streets beyond.
The hotel is in the heart of San Francisco, within walking distance from Union Square, Chinatown, Market Street. Reasonably priced for a hotel in this location. Room was clean and staff were friendly and helpful.
Very nice hotel located in nice area of San Francisco. Easy connection to the downtown by bus that stops around the corner. A lot of restaurants around. Big rooms with very comfortable beds.
