The Sardinian capital, Cagliari has a historic old town, busy port and one of the island’s best beaches. The sweeping stretch of sand at Poetto offers great summer nightlife, and just inland is Molentargius lagoon, where flamingos nest against the backdrop of the city.
Cagliari is spread over a small hill and the oldest part – Quartiere Castello – lies at the top. There are far-reaching views from Bastion San Remy, its main entrance point. Medieval city walls lead from here to the simple cathedral, and nearby is the 18th-century Palazzo Regio.
By one of the original city gates is the National Archaeological Museum, housing a collection of Phoenician and Roman artefacts from the city’s Tuvixeddu Necropolis. There are also displays of the nuraghic civilisation whose former dwellings pepper Sardinia. The most impressive is Su Nuraxi north of Cagliari.
Just outside the walls are remains of a Roman amphitheatre, next to the university botanical gardens. Orange tree-lined streets descend the hill towards the seafront where restaurants and bars can be found. Cagliari FC play at Sant’Elia Stadium along the coast and opposite is the Sardinia International Fair, an important conference venue.

Most travelers go to Cagliari for the beaches but it is also lovely during the festive season in December. There are many historical and cultural sites to visit and the city is decorated for the holidays.

An excellent city trip with easy access to the beaches too.
An excellent city trip with easy access to the beaches too. I met some friends there.
The city is steeped in history, however do go to the tourist information office for advice as they will provide you with lots of extra hints and tips.
In four short days we saw most of the city by foot, we hired bikes and cycled to the Salt Marshes and the Poeto beach. We also took a bus to Argiolas vineyard which was exceptional and only cost 35 euros for the tour and wine tasting.
The city has a wide range of restaurants and patisseries, do you research though and find what you prefer.
If your a football fan, keep an eye on the Cagliari fixtures as their stadium is just outside of the city.
If you do take a bus in the city, you need to get your bus ticket in advance and you must tap the digital pad in the bus to activate your bus pass, otherwise you will get fined 53 euros. This happened to us and was infuriating as we thought we had done this, and yet the three inspectors were very unfriendly, and despite three of us had done the trip together, they would not believe that one of us must have had an issue with the digital ticket reader (unbeknown to us) - very sad and not a good attitude to tourists!

Cagliari is a friendly city.
Cagliari is a friendly city. There was plenty to do for a short break. We visited the major sites and found it a really walkable place, as long as you don't mind the frequent uphill climbs. As the weather was so nice we spent a lot of time outside but were aware of the many and varied shops. It was really easy to get around and we caught the bus to the beach at Poetta a couple of times which was a 20 minute journey at most.
There were so many restaurants to choose from that we stuck to recommended ones which were delicious.

Cagliari is very walkable in the old town centre & very beautiful. The people in general were very friendly & we managed to make our selves understood with their broken English & our piccolo Italian. There are many day visits to be made from the city through stunning dramatic landscapes. We will come back.

There were loads of lovely places to eat within short walking distance from our hotel at the port. Interesting museums and we walked to the Necropolis and Roman amphitheatre. Botanical gardens were lovely and very quiet. Good range of independent shops. Took the local bus to the beach , easy to buy tickets and navigate independently. The nearby Poetto beach was quiet, beautiful and had a supermarket to buy lunch

Close to the centre of Cagliari- 20 minute walk or you could catch the bus
Check in was very simple- all instructions were sent prior to check in, even with videos of how to access the apartment.
The property was very clean and the room was a very good size with a lovely en-suite
The breakfast was just a short walk away from the hotel where an Italian style breakfast was served e.g coffee and croissant (which was amazing!)
Would highly recommend this B&B
Excellent communication from the moment we booked and a warm welcome from Giulia. Well stocked with food and drink and the place was clean, comfortable and in a perfect location to explore Cagliari. So helpful with dietary restrictions. The balcony was the reason we chose this property and it was a great place to sit and read, eat and soak in the Sardinian atmosphere. Would highly recommend and will definitely be back if I'm in Cagliari again one day.
Everything was truly amazing, starting with Fabio, who was the perfect host and gave us the most incredible tips not only to explore Cagliari but also all Sardegna. He also prepared a really good breakfast, with a selection of Sardinian delicacies. The room was big, clean, well decorated and the bed was really confortable. The location was also great, walking distance from the main spots in Cagliari. It was a perfect stay.
Super cute and beautiful flat in the middle of old town Cagliari. When you go outside you are in the middle of a small but vivid square. The flat is very quiet, clean and offers everything you need. The owners were super welcoming and even offered us a variety of Sardinian sweets when we arrived. Communication was not just easy but really sympathetic. We loved everything about the place.
The location was superb, literally overlooking the Bastione di St.Remy, everything was walking distance including the Marina and Via Roma. The accommodation was excellent - comfortable, clean and nicely furnished. There is a nice roof terrace which you can see the sea from. All in all it was great value for money and a great base to explore Cagliari and southern Sardinia.
