A City Fit to Prosper
Yogyakarta represents the Javanese quintessence, the guardian of the island’s traditions, language, culture and arts. Capital of kingdoms and empires since the 8th century, ‘Yogya’ is today the capital of the namesake Sultanate and Special Region of Indonesia.
With ancient origins, the city was during centuries the capital of the Mataram Kingdom, but its power was weakened when the Dutch East India Company started to gain control over the small Javanese kingdoms during the 17th century. After World War II, the Indonesian independence was supported by the Sultan, allowing the monarchy to stay in power. The city became the country’s first capital from 1945 to 1949.
Its name was inspired by the Indian Ramayana epic, with ‘Yogya’ meaning 'suitable, fit’ and ‘karta’ meaning 'prosperous'. Must-see sites include the Kraton Yogyakarta Palace, the Taman Sari Castle, the Alun-Alun Sultan's ground, and the Masjid Gede Kauman Mosque. Jalan Malioboro street is one of the most popular shopping areas, and many hotels in Yogyakarta are located nearby.
Its proximity to the famous temples of Borobudur and Prambanan makes this town one of the country’s most popular destinations. Hotels, resorts and homestay accommodation are also available near those areas.

Prambanan Temple was amazing!
Prambanan Temple was amazing! We went there though it's raining heavily but the view during rain was as spectacular as ever. We had so much delicious food, from ayam penyet to soto to bakso and gudeg! It was all too satisfying! SInce we had a supir to get around the city in a car, travelling by foot might be a little challenging as some landmarks are quite far. We enjoyed so much of jeep riding to Pantai Timang, Gunung Merapi, Gumuk Pasir. But we didn't manage to go Borobodur due to the weather and also timing. Yogyakarta is a vibrant city, the most important of the whole island for its cultural wonders. Borobudur, Prambanan, Sonobudoyo Museum, Kraton palace, traditional Javanese gamelam music, danses and wayang puppet or human performances based on Ramayana and Mahabharata Stories! It's an absolute must for people visiting Indonesia. The temples, Borobudur and Prambanan, are world class attractions. The new airport is top notch. The Sultan's Palace is interesting. The rest of Yogyakarta does not stand out.

I found Yogyakarta very beautiful with rice paddies, lush vegetation and space to breathe. There is less traffic than in Ubud and I found the people very kind. It is very Islamic so this is something to keep in mind when traveling to Yogya. The pace is slower and invites one to pause and relax in a different way. The beaches are spectacular and the local food and fruits are delicious.

It's a unique city, very friendly. We met some awesome people who were eager to share their craft with us. A barista who roasts coffee and showed us how he did it, and wanted to give us more coffee to try but it was late so we had to decline. We went back the next day though, Callme cafe and roastery, check them out! We met a bartender who was a master mixologist, and gave us many incredibly delicious drinks to try, we didn't even ask! He just wanted us to try his creations! They were beyond phenomenal! Barley and Barrel, I can't remember his name though, I have difficulty with names. Ask for the fruit salad cocktail if he's still there though, it's like a Wonka creation! I hope he gets a position where he can shine, he's a unique talent. Malioboro is good for shopping and souvenirs, and very busy at night. For Indonesia, the weather was surprisingly mild. Borobudur is, of course, majestic, and the work they've put into the property was excellent. Our stay at Borobudurhills hotel was excellent and the view of Borobudur in the distance was breathtaking. The area around it, especially in the hills up north, is filled with cool people and interesting sights. I would love to have spent another week or two there. And it's also very cheap, relatively speaking, especially compared to Bali. It's definitely a cool place to see and there is some very good food if you look for it.
