Constructing the Competency Model of Online Course Developer: A Research Based on Behavioral Event Interview

Published: 14 August 2022 Publication History

Abstract

In China, the developers of the online course are playing a dual-level role in their work. Firstly, they act as online educators who need to grasp essential knowledge, skills and attitudes to cooperate with teachers and complete successful online teaching. Secondly, they should have specific competence to accomplish technological work, such as resource management, platform development, material making, and technology service. Hence, the competency level of this group significantly influences the quality of online education. For this, we carried out the research project to build up a systematic framework for the competency development of online course developers, and the first stage is to construct the competency model. This research firstly gave a systematic job analysis of the online course developers to establish the two-leveled framework of the competency model, which contains general competency characters and specific competency characters. Then, the competency dictionaries for two competency character groups were confirmed with the Delphi method. Based on the above, the Behavioral Event Interview (BEI) was applied step by step to find out the character that could distinguish the normal performance and excellent performance. Finally, a competency model composed of 12 general competency characters and 8 specific competency characters is constructed for online course developers, and its value for further study on competency development is detailed at the end.
