Ode to Mary Quant

May 16, 2023

Mary Quant was undeniably a fashion icon. She changed the way women dressed in the 1960's with her design of the miniskirt and hot pants. Ladies and girls everywhere went from fitted waisted, full skirt dresses to short skirts and figure hugging short shorts. Wearing one of Quant's pieces became an act of rebellion against the traditions of the older generations and an act of liberation of the female form.

Although her most iconic pieces were created in the 1960's, she continued to design well into the 1980s. Ernestine Carter once wrote: "It is given to a fortunate few to be born at the right time, in the right place, with the right talents. In recent fashion there are three: ChanelDior, and Mary Quant." Some people can create things that also create change and Mary Quant was one of those people.

She passed away on April 13, 2023 at the age of 93. Mary Quant once said; "Fashion is not frivolous. It is a part of being alive today."

I recently acquired an issue of Mademoiselle Magazine from August 1960 and while I was going through the pages I found a slew of photos of gorgeous fall plaid outfits that I just had to share. I am a sucker for plaid and I'd wear it any season but I especially love this pattern for the fall. Which of these outfits are your favorite?

Here are some fall plaid outfits from 1960:

My Favorite Spring Transition Piece

March 17, 2022

A Vintage Nerd, Vintage Fashion, Vintage Capes, Vintage Blog, Vintage Fashion Blog, Spring Transition Fashion

Through the years of wearing vintage and retro fashions I have found one piece that has become a spring staple of mine. The weather between winter and spring usually fluctuates with sunny days paired with chilly wind. The weather isn't too cold for a coat anymore but it isn't warm enough for a cardigan either. Let me introduce you to my favorite spring transition piece, the cape.

The cape has been used in all lengths, fabrics, and colors through the entirety of the last century. In the 1930's women's capes were cropped and in the 1960's they had pockets. In the 1950's women's capes came with belts and in the 1970's they were knitted. Whether you choose to buy true vintage or vintage inspired women's capes, a cape can keep you warm without having you sweat which is the goal during the winter to spring weather transitions.

My favorite kind of capes have pockets, keep me warm, look stylish, and feel comfortable. It's the perfect spring fashion transition piece that allows you to not feel overheated with a big coat anymore and yet keep you warm when the chilly breeze comes through. They go great with casual jeans and look super cute with dresses. The cape is versatile which is an important because it can be used with so many different outfits sporadically throughout the year. I've worn my capes through all the seasons but it has become my favorite spring transition piece because it does the job that coats and cardigans can't do when the weather is shifting from cold to warmer days.

What is your favorite spring transition piece? If you are interested in reading about my favorite fall transition piece you can read all about it HERE.

Audrey was a huge fan of headscarves. They protect you from the elements damaging your hairstyle as well as look pretty while keeping your head warm.

Today would have been Audrey Hepburn 92nd Birthday. She was known for her compelling roles and her humanitarian work but also for her love of fashion. Audrey collaborated with Hubert de Givenchy on many of her films creating what is now known as the Audrey style. Her looks on screen were a blend of simplicity and flair. She found that the right clothes for a film helped her feel the part and in real life felt that fashion boosted her self-confidence.

Although there is a lot admire with Audrey's film fashion, let's look at personal everyday style. Here are 8 simple steps to creating Audrey Hepburn's iconic style.

My Favorite Fall Transition Piece

I love berets but cardigans are by far my favorite fall transition piece. I personally think the beauty of the cardigan is its versatility. I typically have my cardigans out in my closet all year around. I also use them in the summer because you never know when you will be entering a chilly room. Cardigans are easy to store, add instant warmth, and bring a cozy vintage feel to your wardrobe. Its a staple in my wardrobe because it is so versatile, comfy, and always makes me feel in tune with my vintage and retro aesthetics.

The history of the cardigan began in the 1800's with James Brudenell, 7th Earl of Cardigan, a British Army Major General who led the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava during the Crimean War. It was named after him and originally modeled after the knitted wool waistcoat that British officers supposedly wore during that war. The legend of the event and the fame that Lord Cardigan achieved after the war led to the rise of the garment's popularity – supposedly, Brudenell invented the cardigan after noticing that the tails of his coat had accidentally been burnt off in a fireplace.

But it was the iconic Coco Chanel who in the 1920's restyled the cardigan for women because she found men's cardigans to be too heavy and long. The story goes that she was inspired to restyle this garment because  she hated mussing up her hair as she pulled on a tight-necked men’s pullover. The cardigan only grew in popularity through the decades of the 20th with Lana Turner and her "sweater girl" style all the way to Mr. Rogers who proudly wore the cardigans his beloved mother knitted for him all throughout the airing of his show, Mr. Rogers Neighborhood (1968-2001).

I believe that cardigans have such a rich history in vintage fashion that they make the perfect fall transition piece. If you love cardigans as much as I do then you score them wherever you can find them. I own both vintage and modern ones but as long as it is a cardigan it always make me feel like I am wrapped warmly in the past.

Vintage Summer Fashion Inspiration

August 12, 2020
A Vintage Nerd, Vintage Blog, Vintage Fashion, Vintage Summer Fashion, True Vintage Fashion, True Vintage Summer Fashion

Here we are at the last weeks of summer at my end of the world and its getting hotter and hotter. I am not a summer person but its really mainly because of my CMT. Those with CMT (peripheral nerve disease) don't handle extreme cold or heat well. Its does all these strange things to us that makes things painful, difficult, and very very uncomfortable. I know for me during the summer I over heat, mind you I have to wear plastic leg braces all day long so you can imagine that discomfort. But despite my body's dislike for this season I do appreciate the down time away from school stuff from the kids, the coolness of my air conditioner, and the abundance of strawberry icey treats that come my way.

Something I can always appreciate as well are the summer fashions of the bygone decades. I love how feminine dresses remained even for warmer weather and how incredibly cute it was for women to match their tops and bottoms with their shoes and hats. Who doesn't adore a well color coordinated outfit?

What sort of vintage fashion do you like to use during your summers? Do you keep cool with a vintage headscarf  and sunglasses or do you prefer cotton dresses with matching purses?

Vintage Spring Fashion Inspiration

May 04, 2020
A Vintage Nerd, Vintage Blog, Fashion Blog, Spring Vintage Fashion, Vintage Spring Fashion Inspiration, Sixties Spring Fashion, Vintage Inspiration, Vintage Spring

Spring is in the air here in New York despite the current circumstances at the moment. The trees in my neighborhood are getting greener, we laid out fresh mulch in our front yard, and every morning we can hear the birds singing. Our cats are in their happy place when I open a few windows and let the spring air in. I cannot blame them. Spring brings a freshness to our environment that you can't help but feel a sense of new beginnings.

Our spring fashion changes by using our coats less and our cardigans more. Colors like green, pink, and yellow come to mind when I think of spring. Florals and plaids make me think of picnics in the park and long walks with the fresh spring air breezing through my hair. The winter blues become a thing of the past and spring fashions can really perk up your mood. What spring pieces are you looking forward to wearing? What about vintage spring fashion do you enjoy the most?
