What is fluffy Coke? This sugary drink has exploded on TikTok

A super sweet mashup has taken TikTok by storm.

On July 6, TikToker Emma Grace Burke (@not.eg) posted a video tutorial she made with her grandmother Memama on how to make a drink dubbed “fluffy coke.” The sugary beverage hack involves a combination of Marshmallow Fluff, Coca-Cola and ice, and it’s made in a few simple steps.

“My mom mentioned she had seen the drink on-line and thought it would be fun for my grandmother (Memama) and me to make,” Burke tells TODAY.com via email. “And she was right!”

“Look how fluffy my Coke is, lookie there,” Memama says at the start of the video in her signature Southern accent, showing off the finished product. “We’re gonna make a fluffy Coca-Cola.”

We see the pair prep empty cups using spatulas to dig into a jar of Marshmallow Fluff.

“You’re gonna start with your cup and your Marshmallow Fluff and spread it all in your cup,” Burke says while showing the process before Memama adds that she loves the stuff.

“Ooh, I could eat a big spoonful of this,” Memama says, taking a large dollop out of the jar and licking it up, much to her granddaughter’s bemusement.

Then, Memama puts the “good ice” in the cup, making sure to fill it up to the brim. Burke comes in with the assist, opening up both cans. “I always break a nail if I do that,” Memama says.

After pouring the soda and stirring the glasses with a straw, they try their fluffy Cokes and both give rave reviews.

“I could drink like four of these,” Burke says, right after she and Memama give the drink a 10 out of 10 score.

The duo’s video went viral, amassing more than 3.9 million views, with most folks in the comments section applauding the drink.

“I have never heard of such a thing and now I must have it,” wrote one commenter.

“You’ve unlocked a new pregnancy craving for me,” wrote another. “Time to go outside and cry to my husband 😭.”

“Co-cola is so southern Meemaw coded it hurts,” someone else chimed in, to which another commenter replied, “In the best way♥️.”

In the time since Burke and Memama made their fluffy Cokes, the recipe spread around TikTok as smoothly as a spatula full of gooey white Fluff. The hashtag #fluffycoke on TikTok shows more than 650 videos with folks young and old trying the combo for themselves.

“8/10 ⭐️ *you really have to mix the fluff in there*,” wrote Quori-Tyler (@quorityler) in the on-screen caption of her dialogue-free video, which garnered more than 548,000 views.

The TikToker used Jet-Puffed Marshmallow Creme instead of Marshmallow Fluff for her drink. In the video caption, she said she loves TikTok “because it puts me on to things like this.”

“This trend is a little insane but it was so good,” reads a caption from TikToker Gabriela Campos (@gabriela.vlogs) showing her remix of the drink using Dr Pepper instead of Coke.

Other people have made variations of the drink using Diet Coke, Peach Pepsi, Root Beer and even coffee. Some added candied cherries, like British comedian Michael Barrymore — although he wasn’t a big fan.

Among the droves of folks online sharing how much they love the viral drink, there are just as many who aren’t so excited. Critics have been taking to the comments sections as well as posting videos trying the drinks for themselves.

“Don’t get me wrong, I may have a sweet tooth, but watching this made my stomach hurt,” wrote another TikToker in the caption of his reaction video.

“Adding sugar to Coke is CRAZY,” another user commented on a video by @mikaylamcn. Someone else added, “My teeth hurt.”

“It kind of gives me milkshake vibes, like Coke and ice cream,” @taticabriales said in her review. She wrote in her caption that “As a coke girly I was a little underwhelmed 🥲.”

“Why did yall lie to me??” wrote @sonjawhite_teach in the caption of her negative review. “This fluffy coke tastes just like coke, no extras!! Yall owe me $1.47 and some gas for running from store to store looking for this jet puff stuff! Fluffy coke = epic fail.”

“This is going to be a b---- to clean,” TikToker @adriana.inez says in her video, bringing up a salient point about post-drink glassware cleanup.

The criticism isn’t limited to TikTok, either. One X user shared an image of their drink and wrote, “this fluffy coke trend is overrated.”

Regardless of negative reviews, there is a reason why this trend has gone as far as it has. And Burke says she thinks it’s got a lot to do with the nature of the drink itself.

“I think the Fluffy Coke has gone so viral, not only because it is delicious, but also because it is so fun to make,” Burke tells TODAY.com in an email. “It’s like a little craft project and a drink wrapped into one fun and delicious experience.”
