In contrast to a couple of the other tree services we contacted, Treescapes actually gave us an estimate without having to nag them for it. The estimate had separate line items for pruning the pine tree and for pruning a couple of ash trees, which is what I asked for. I have to revise my earlier review of giving an A - while they were courteous, punctual and performed the job asked, I later discovered that the use of chain saws to prune my small-ish peppermint willows is very damaging to the branches, and that the oil they use for the chain saws can also cause damage if it drips or leaks. As a result, the tree they pruned last fall now has several dead branches. Some are major branches, and some are showing minor trauma. My bad for not knowing you should prune certain trees by hand. Greg assessed the job and set things up. One of the things that stood out is the thought that went into finding the best way to achieve the desired result, in terms of aesthetics as well as cost. Giovanni, Lalo & Domingo showed up on time and did an amazing job. This was not an easy one. They had to climb inside the bamboo up high at times to trim it, but they got it done. We were told the Canada Tree crew would take from 10 am to 1pm to prune 2 large silver maples in our parkway, but they were already finished pruning and were cleaning up when we arrived back on the site at 11:30 am to check on them at the time we were told would be the half-way point. I asked for 2 tall limbs to be pruned down a bit more because the trees appeared to be very lopsided, far too asymmetrical. The foreman, Emilio, refused to cut any more. He would not even walk one house away to the corner with us to see how the trees looked from the side.He would not send anyone back up into the trees even though the owner, Mike, had told me this was a 3-hour job, not a 1 1/2-hour job. I then asked them to clean up the lower 5 or 6 feet of the trees where there was a lot of immature excess growth they had not pruned away. They did do that for us, although it was something that should have been done before they began the ground clean-up, which they now had to repeat. I disliked Emilio's attitude. His response to my request to have the 2 limbs shortened, providing a more symmetrical pruning was, "Did you see your permit?" I assumed he was obliquely referring to the limit of 25% greenery removal. I don't think he had actually done the math, nor would anyone have. If the client is not happy with the symmetry of a pruning job, and the crew was originally expecting to be there another hour and a half, they should have climbed back up into the tree and shortened those 2 limbs for us. This crew did a less satisfactory job than other tree pruners I have hired and they were more expensive, one and a half hours for $700 and an unfinished job. I found the attitude of the foreman to be borderline insulting. The owner was nice and very knowledgeable, but he did not return my first 2 calls to schedule the job. When he did schedule this pruning he was sick and I appreciated his scheduling the job despite how ill he felt. Perhaps if he had been present for the work the result would have been more satisfactory. I really like the people I hire to be pleasant and to try to satisfy our needs. This crew did neither. I have used Trees N Things for many years. I have several extremely large trees that need to be pruned regularly so that they are not in danger of losing limbs during the Santa Ana Winds. I have an ash tree so large, that when it is pruned, the entire back yard is covered about four feet deep in limbs. When Trees N Things comes out to service my trees, Ron brings a crew with all the proper equipment so that there are no safety issues. This company prunes trees correctly. They do not hack at them or scalp them. When they have finished, the trees appear trimmed but also look good. My trees are very valuable in this area because they help shade the house when the weather is very hot. So I have always wanted to have them pruned regularly and correctly.
