Excellent product from Netgear but confusing Warranty policy!
4 out of 5 stars
Excellent product from Netgear but confusing Warranty policy!
Pros: - Top end hardware - best in class processor and RAM - Solid connectivity over 2.4 gHz and 5 gHz bands. - Excellent network printing features for converting your USB printers into network printer and support airprint for Apple devices - Backup software available from Netgear for creating network backups - DDWRT firmware compatibleCons: - Warranty policy is confusing: Read review below for details. - DLNA Media Server not as robust - Open VPN client functionality not available - only Open VPN server function available and that too needs improvement - Torrent Download Manager needs improvementOther routers considered: - Asus ac68u AC1900 - TP-Link Archer C9 AC1900 - Linksys Cisco not considered due to large price differentialDetailed Review:I have been using the Netgear R7000 router for about a week and it is an amazing product. The CPU and RAM specs for this router are the best in the AC 1900 class at the time of review. Hardware specs are comparable to the Asus 1900 (R7000 has a slight edge) but completely blow away the TP-Link Archer C9. Both the 2.4gHz and 5gHz frequency bands work perfectly. Obviously the 2.4 gHz band has a longer range. I gave the same name to both these networks and used the Smart Feature on the router. No complaints there and connectivity is awesome. The router is also compatible with DDWRT open source firmware.I had bought this for networking at my home office to connect about 5 desktops, a PS3, a CCTV DVR connected by wire and 3 laptops and several phones and tablets connected wirelessly. All these devices connect perfectly with the router. So far the router has no dropped connection or downtime and is working flawlessly. My main reason for getting this router was that I have an old HP USB laserjet printer which I needed to use as network printer for office use and connect a 2 TB portable harddisk for setting up a DLNA Media server for accessing videos and music on Playstation 3 and iPad and phones etc. for home use. I connected the printer to the USB 2.0 port on the router and the external HDD on the USB 3.0 port. The R7000 has excellent network printing capability. What I liked the best was that now I can use my USB laser printer as a network printer and can give print jobs from all wired and wireless device without having a dedicated computer connected for network printing. All you need to do is install the network printing app from Netgear website on each laptop/desktop and you are good to go.What's more is the wireless printing feature from Apple devices which converts your basic USB printer to an Airprint device. But for this feature you need to install the Netgear Genie app on your iPads and iPhones and also install the Genie app on at least one of your PC connected either by wire or wifi to the router. The PC having the Genie app needs to be ON when sending print commands from iPad or iPhone but this is understandable and not that big of a hassle since most people don't usually have to print from an iPad or iPhone that often. You can get free DDNS service from Netgear too if your ISP gives a Dynamic IP or if you hate remembering your static IP address. This function is really useful for accessing your CCTV DVR security camera or your files on external HDD through FTP when you are away from home and for VPN connections to your home network.Another great feature is the Netgear Downloader which allows one to perform intensive download/upload tasks over P2P networks (torrents) without having to keep your PC turned on. The router directly downloads the files to the HDD connected to it once the torrent file is uploaded to the router. However this feature is in beta phase and as of now downloading by magnet links does not work properly. The network printing function is what led me to choose the R7000 over the Asus ac68u. I had initially purchased the Asus router, but the network printing gave me headache and I had a tough time getting my older Win XP desktops in office to print consistently through this router. After trying several fixes I finally returned it back to Amazon within the allowed return period since network printing being office task took higher priority over other features. Thank you Amazon for being so amazing. Also Netgear offers backup software for scheduling and creating backups of your PC on the external HDD connected to router. Asus is missing this feature but you can always buy your own software for creating backups on network attached storage. However on every other feature the Asus router beats the Netgear R7000 when comparing them on stock firmware basis and without DDWRT. For example the R7000 supports only Open VPN server feature and not Open VPN client. What this means is that you can use Open VPN to connect to your home network from outside network location. This is useful for office type scenario where one might need to connect to the home network. However if you want to use Open VPN client wherein you can connect to a VPN service through your router so that network traffic on all your devices is routed through an external VPN provider, for privacy and security, this function is not available on the R7000 at this time at least on stock firmware.I had tried the TP-Link Archer C9 too before the Asus, but it lacks the features available on either the Netgear or Asus and the performance does not stand comparison with either of these superior devices. If you are buying an AC1900 or higher config router stay away from TP-Link since it is waste of money as you are basically paying a premium price for product testing a substandard and underdeveloped router. Both Asus and Netgear AC1900 routers are much mature devices that have been around for quite some time and hence most of the issues/problems are already ironed out. The current price differential between TP-Link Archer C9 and equivalent standard Asus/Netgear is not large enough to justify purchasing TP-LinkMOST IMPORTANT - NETGEAR Warranty policy is confusing:At the time of purchase of the router I was under the impression that it comes with only 1 year warranty policy unlike the Asus which gives 3 years hardware warranty. Even TP-Link is offering 3 years warranty on their device. I registered the router on Netgear website and it showed warranty period to be only 1 year as well.HOWEVER, a few days later I noticed on the router box (cardboard packaging) that a 3 year warranty period was mentioned. I raised a ticket with Netgear support and sent them a picture of the router box. They eventually increased my warranty period by additional 2 years to keep the promise of 3 years as mentioned on the box. However had I discarded the box and overlooked this, I would had lost out on the additional 2 years of product support. What's more, it seems some router boxes for R7000 on google image search DO NOT show this 3 year hardware warranty.SO PLEASE IF YOU BUY A NETGEAR R7000, CHECK YOUR ROUTER BOX AND REGISTER YOUR PRODUCT ON THEIR WEBSITE. IF NEEDED RAISE A TICKET WITH NETGEAR SUPPORT AND HAVE YOUR WARRANTY PERIOD EXTENDED. Because maybe a year down the line if something goes wrong with your router you will be left without warranty and would have no recourse to replacement unless you have the original packaging lying around.Note on Wireless AC protocol:A lot of people seem to think that the Wireless AC standard/protocol will give them phenomenal networking and wireless video streaming speeds. This is not entirely true since most end devices do not support the AC standard at this time. You will get amazing speeds ONLY when you use two of such Wireless AC devices. For example a second wireless AC router or range extender/Access point connected to your Smart TV and accessing your primary wireless AC router. Moreover your max wireless streaming speed will be dictated by the lower of these two devices. If you are not planning on such elaborate network setup at this time stick with wireless N devices and you should be fine both in terms of range and speed.TO Summarize: - Go for Asus ac68u if network printing through older PCs and printers is not a big priority for you. Open VPN as well as P2P downloading features are much better on Asus - Go for Netgear R7000 if you need hassle free network printing and Airprint feature of Apple devices. The free backup software for storing backups on network storage is pretty sweet too. If you get the 3 year hardware warranty from Netgear it is even better. I bought mine during Amazon Lightning deal and found Netgear to be cheaper than Asus by about Rs. 1800/- at that time. - Go for TP-Link Archer C9 if you like to waste your money and conduct product testing for the benefit of manufacturer.

UPDATE 2018: The router is still running strong after 3 years with regular firmware updates, will post more about circle app soon

To start with, this router is a BEAST. So I received this router totally sealed in the factory packaging and the delivery by amazon was too quick.

The package contains the normal instructions manual, warranty papers, 3 High power antennaes, the BEAST (router), its adapter(quite big) and a Cat 5 ethernet cable that is everything you need to run this.

    Installation: TOO DAMN EASY
Simply plug in the adapter, connect the router with the modem using the ethernet supplied, turn it on and then open a internet browser on your PC/Mac and Bam it sets up everything automatically and is ready in a minute without your intervention.
It also takes you to download the Netgear router management app (Netgear Genie), The auto PC/Mac backup app(Netgear Readyshare Vault), the Wireless printing app to use the printer/scanner connected via USB to the router(Netgear Readyshare USB control centre).

Range: As it has two bands 2.4Ghz(greater penetrance power so greater range, comparatively low speed-600Mbps) and a 5.0Ghz(lesser penetrance power, a bit lesser range but very high speed-1300Mbps)

2.4Ghz Band: Well it reaches every nook and corner of the house(which is around 3000-4000 square feet) with consistent connection crossing many cement walls, covering ground, first and second floor with the router being kept on the first floor. So i would say it beats my previous router(Belkin Dual Band AC750+) totally which failed to supply my ground floor adequately. Now I'm getting fairly good signal even in rooms in which I had no WiFi signal detectable earlier.

5.0Ghz- I'm particularly impressed by the 5.0Ghz band as it's range is a HUGE (read HUUUUUUGE) improvement as compared to my previous router which was also an AC class router. This band is covering all the rooms and the balcony adequately on the first floor and the second floor, haven't tested this band on the ground floor yet. And the speed is blazingly fast on this band(1300Mbps)

You also get a "Smart Connect" feature in which the router connects your device with the best available band automatically to give you the best possible internet experience on that device

NOTE: the internet speed & ping depends on your Internet Service Provider and not on the router. The speed on Local network(between a PC and the other devices) is the one that is controlled by the router.

Looks: Although it is slightly bigger but it looks beautiful, and aggressive at the same time just like the stealth fighter jet, LockHeed Martin Nighthawk.

LAN Ports: Well you get 4 Gigabit Ports so of-course you can use them for a super-fast local connection (1 Gigabit speed) as compared to the legacy 10/100Mbps LAN ports on my previous router although I hardly use them.

USB Ports : 2 available, one is USB 3.0 at the front and the other is USB 2.0 at the back.
You can connect a printer to the port and print or scan wirelessly. You can also make your printer AirPrint compatible by using the Netgear Genie app on the PC/Mac
You can also connect a PenDrive or an External HDD and use it as Network Storage device to store, open and share files on a network.
The router also has a downloading client which downloads the files to the connected hard disk automatically even when the computers are turned off by using it's own processor.

The processor reminds me of the 1Ghz Dual Core processor that is the heart of this router and is quite strong to support a number of wirelessly connected devices ensuring stability of the connection.

Guest Access: You can enable guest access which starts another Wifi with a different SSID(WiFi name) specifically for the guests and you can decide the duration for which the guests can access your internet connection. The difference in guest access is that the guests cannot control your modem or access devices like External HDD connected to your router if you want it to be personal.

Parental Control: You can decide what your children can access on the internet and even disconnect the device from the network using Netgear Genie if you see your child accessing the internet late at night when he/she isn't supposed to be using it.

iTunes Server: You can enable this to access media files on the attached Storage media on any AirPlay compatible Apple device.

FTP Server: You can make your own FTP server for file access on the attached external HDD or Pendrive remotely by creating your free customised Netgear FTP domain name.

VPN : is also supported in the stock firmware

    Dynamic DNS : available

Then the router officially supports After market firmwares like DD-WRT, OpenWRT etc for advanced users

Warranty : 90 days complimentary phone support + 2 years limited hardware warranty by Netgear India

    And the list goes on......

If this router does fall in your budget, just buy it without any second thought. Even I was confused between ASUS 68U and this one but I'm happy to get this. And thanks to Amazon for making it possible by giving a great deal on this router

Very easy to setup and get started. You can always go back and tweak the settings as you need at a later time. Make sure you keep the netgear online and router login/pw handy. Also can setup VPN and Centralized printer. Haven't yet tried setting up the network storage, that will be phase 2 after I get a good and reliable storage device. I also connected cctv, voip device and another 2nd router to create a subnet with different ip address range. Mostly ensuring reliable physical connectivity among all these devices took time, but the Router setup was straightforward with a bit of networking knowledge (aka google). A very Handy tool to buy is a low-cost ($5 - $10) cable testing device to test ethernet cables Prior to connecting the devices. Couple of places i had to join cables, simply soldered them and insulated the individual joints before packing it with electrical tape (extra effort just because of the quirky wiring they had installed in the building). Soldering the joints ensures no speed drops due to bad connections in your building wiring. Don't blame the router if you have bad wiring and poor joints. R8000P Range is quite good and you can tone it down if the full 100% signal is not needed. Also a cool feature is turn off the wireless signal at specific times the router is on and still connected to the wired devices only wireless is turned off (ex night time) so you are not getting slammed by radiation (if that is something you care about). You can also turn off the 5g radios (2 separate bands) as needed/not. Overall this one gadget did it for me to get the entire building 3 floors and yard covered. Am future proofed for another 5 years. Set it up right so you do not have to worry later. Netgear Armor is good for the 1st month and Parent Circle trial is available.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid router when loaded with third party firmware

IMPORTANT NOTE: I modified this device right out of the box by flashing OpenWRT firmware. If you want a review of the firmware that ships with it, look elsewhere. If you want to know how this works with OpenWRT installed, read on.

I bought this model specifically because it had support for OpenWRT. I've been using it for years on an older router that finally bit the dust, and wanted to keep the same functionality and API for my internal systems.

The flash was a simple matter of following directions (tftp). It took on the first try, started up with a solid connection, and runs well. I have well over 35 IoT devices and several tablets, all of which talk to this device without issue. Most IoT are using 2.5G with WPA2, the higher end devices are now using 5G with a mix of WPA2/3.

OWRT supports both radios separately, provides bridging, NAT, and all the things you expect of out a router. It also supports the USB ports (as drives at least), and has plenty of CPU cycles, flash space, and memory to make this a long-haul device. I was able to quickly copy over configurations, and re-subnet most of the IoT items into a DMZ and/or in isolation area. This prevents them from either talking to the outside word, or to anything but the outside world, depending on need (Alexa is quite sure she's all alone on the LAN.)

The speed is rather nice on the LAN (and WLAN). Internet connectivity is only limited by my ISP for outside world connections. The latency is quite low, but it's not that important to me either, since I'm not a FPS player that needs lightning fast response times. I've read some support pages that indicate QOS/SWT are shape-able to get very low latency, should I ever care to try it. For what I use it for, it's running under 2% most of the time, and showing no difficulty handling multiple streams to several devices from Prime and/or a local server. Can't ask for much better hardware and/or simplicity of modding for the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Routeur pour flux UHD/4K
