About the author
Gabe Cox is a faith-based author, podcaster, coach, and the founder of Red Hot Mindset. She helps faith-fueled women use their passions to enhance their productivity and spiritual growth so they can go after their God-given goals. As an avid runner, she uses that interest to explore ideas around clarity, goal setting, strategic planning, simplicity, and faith.
Her mission is to help women realize their gifts, hone their skills, and get crystal clear on their calling. She does this through one-on-one coaching, courses, and her podcast by encouraging women to step into the fire of refinement so God can mold and shape them to come out stronger and ready to take action where He is leading.
Her books include Mind Over Marathon: Taking Goals from Start to Finish in the Race of Life; The Lemonade Stand 2 Anthology; and Victory Run: Turning Trials into Triumphs.
She resides in Colorado with her husband and three boys.

If you are a runner you’ll enjoy this book, because the author uses examples from her own running career to illustrate the points she is trying to make throughout the book.
If you are NOT a runner – as long as you’re not an avowed anti-runner – I think you could still appreciate the running-related goal setting/reaching applications of the author’s techniques. Additionally, the author provides many non-running examples from her own life, writing about herself, her husband, and her children to highlight tidbits of personal success that are sure to resonate with most people. In fact, the goal-oriented tools which the author provides for her readers would be applicable to ANY goal-oriented situation.
The author writes in a familiar tone that makes me think I am having a conversation with a friend that really cares about me. She continuously uses vivid examples to emphasize the points she is trying to make, and those points kept coming through loud and clear, one after the other. As a runner myself, I really connected to the author’s mention of how successful people see their successes everywhere. In a way, this validated my personality. My wife tells me I’m obsessed with running because I talk about it constantly and relate many things in life back to running. After reading this book, I’m thinking that maybe I’m that way because I always have SOME running goal or another in progress at any given moment. If I take this book to heart, I now know that am doing the right thing towards my running goals by always being immersed in them, always thinking about them. I had no idea!
The book charts a spiritual journey also. If you are a spiritual person, you will enjoy that each chapter begins and ends with a bible verse. Chapter 6 opens with Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” I have recently rekindled my own close relationship with God, and that quote is so true! If you are close to God you can see His ways becoming visible in everything you do. It’s a great feeling to KNOW that He’s got your back!
There are self-helping reflection questions at the end of each chapter, a “further reading” list of applicable bible quotes, and activities! The “Application” section at the end of each chapter leads the reader into a personal reflection on the topics outlined in that chapter. There are some activities that really bring the author’s ideas to life, making them very tangible and leading us to better habits.
The ideas in this book started changing my life before I was even done reading it! If you’ve ever failed to reach a goal (who hasn’t?), I encourage you to read this book. I think you are sure to find an example that you can relate to, and some new tools to forge a new path forward on the journey to a better you.
Gabe Cox has a dream. Not just any dream, a huge dream. She dreams of running in the Boston Marathon. The Boston Marathon is not just any marathon, but outside of the Olympic Games, it’s the Grand-daddy of them all. The first Boston Marathon was held in 1897, and it was inspired by the 1896 Olympic Games where the first marathon was run.
Not anyone can run this race. An athlete must run a qualifying time and apply to run. From all the race applicants, only the top applicants are approved to run the race. Those that are approved are considered elite athletes in the sport.
While Gabe takes us through the ups and downs of her attempt at qualifying for the Boston Marathon, she shares the various mindset strategies she used along the way. The author not only shares what worked, but she openly divulged what didn’t work and how she adjusted throughout her journey.
Yes, the author is an athlete, but this book is not just for athletes. This book is for anyone who inspires to live life to its fullest. As Gabe states in the introduction, “Life is like a marathon, not a sprint.” All the strategies described in this text may be applied to all areas of your life.
Mindset Over Marathon goes beyond the author’s experiences, providing examples that highlight how others succeed using the principles and strategies throughout the book. Additionally, Gabe freely shares her sources of inspiration with the audience in such a way that brings the reader right into her world.
This is a complete manual that can take you from ordinary to extraordinary. The text teaches you how to set and crush goals, inspires you to believe in yourself, and shows you how to find the path in your own journey. Each chapter ends with a devotional, interesting questions that encourage you to think about your own life, and practical action steps that you can begin right away. If you are looking for the complete package, athlete or not, then I highly recommend Mind Over Marathon. Ready, Set, Go!
Two things I found personally interesting was positive self-talk (the self-fulfillment principal of how we talk to ourselves and why it's so important), and that the only thing you can control is your attitude and actions. That leaves an awful lot we can't control, and yet this book gives some great tools on why that is enough, (if you are intentional about it), and how that can lead to big things in your life. While I share faith in Jesus with the author, I appreciate how the tools could be used by those in any belief system, and yet the scripture given to support each chapter's theme gave a special depth and encouragement to a christian reader embarking on a goal.
I think this book can be appreciated by both runners and non-runners alike, and by both dreamers who want to get to the next level, and those who are just exploring the possibility of dreaming again. This book meets you where you're at and the biographical style makes you feel like the author is rooting for you too.
