OMG! What a GREAT thriller! BAD TOURISTS by Caro Carver will have you re-thinking your vacation plans.

When Darcy is finally granted her very lucrative divorce, she decides to whisk two of her friends off for nine days in the sun in the Maldives with turquoise oceans, white sands and adventures galore. Kate, a struggling ghost writer is tired of writing other people’s stories and wants to write her own. Camilla is a social media influencer and Pilates instructor whose 20 year marriage is like living with a roommate. The three women are bound by a 22 year old tragedy that included a mass murder, a confession to the crime and a conviction. As the anniversary of the Spinnaker Massacre approaches, Darcy has hired Adrian Clifton, a PI in an attempt to answer some of their lingering questions about that fateful night.

Meanwhile, Rob and Jade Marlowe are on their honeymoon at the Sapphire Island Resort. Rob is an older, bigger, intimidating man with a hair trigger and a new wife who is showing signs of abuse. Kate and Camilla want to do what they can to try and help Jane and keep her out of harm’s way. All the while, they are receiving emails and texts from Jacob, Darcy‘s ex-husband who finds discrepancies in his AI program just before selling it off with an expected profit in the seven or eight (or nine) figures. What could the ladies possibly have to do with Jacob’s program breach?

As Adrian continues to dig into the case, Kate once again begins having panic attacks, Camilla continues to post on social media and even finds a love interest on the island and Darcy just wants to figure out why her oldest son won’t speak to her. But what’s she hiding?

This one had me hooked from the very beginning and never let up until final reveal, which, by the way, left me weak in the knees. The writing was flawless and the descriptive elements made me feel the sand beneath my feet and hear the cool lapping of the water. This is apparently the author’s first foray into women’s suspense thrillers and I hope it is not her last. Only a devious mind could plot this one and I can’t wait to see where she takes me next.

Thank you to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster for this ARC opportunity. All opinions are my own and given voluntarily.

Darcy, Camilla, and Kate share a history twined around a tragedy. Now, decades later, the three take a trip to the Maldives to "celebrate" Darcy's divorce from a husband who was cheating on her. There, they meet, Jade, a young 20-something, honeymooning with her husband, Rob, who is in his early forties.

How all these lives intertwine (past and present), especially as related to the tragedy in their lives is the premises of the book.

Pros:
I positively loved the setting and the way the three friends interacted together. The descriptions of lavish poolside and beach excess immersed me in the setting. In many ways it was like taking a vacation. I really connected with all three ladies right off the bat, and also with Jade and the situation she found herself in. I was riveted for the first 75% of the book. The mystery of what happened in the past and how it would be resolved in the present kept me glued. I was also intrigued by Darcy's home life with her husband and (especially) her three boys. So many questions needing answers!

Cons:
Things went off the rails around the 75% mark. I was still engrossed, but felt I was no longer immersed so much as being dragged along. There were surprises for sure, but--despite my love of convoluted plots--the last quarter of the book went too far over the top. I was disappointed by the turns the story took and found them far too hard to swallow. So much potential, but the ending just didn't work for me.

Still, given the entertainment value of the majority of the book, this makes a good popcorn read.

"Three tight-knit friends embark on an extravagant divorce trip to the Maldives where they can unwind and celebrate a new chapter in midlife—until they realize the resort of their dreams is harboring a killer."

The line above is a perfect synopsis for the novel 'Bad Tourists' by new-to-me author Caro Carver. Close friends Darcy, Camilla, and Kate take a once-in-a-lifetime trip to the Maldives to "celebrate" Darcy's return to singledom after a nasty divorce. Upon arrival at the Sapphire Island Resort, they are met with the epitome of luxury and exclusivity, with personal butlers and fun activities their crosses to bear (ha!) However, there is soon a dark pall over their getaway as they meet young Jade, who is on her honeymoon with an abusive husband. This brings back torturous memories as the friends were all linked by a macabre incident from the past. Soon, feelings of betrayal and mistrust come to the surface among them because they realise - a killer has crashed their trip.

What I loved most about this novel was Carver's ability to transfer me to the Maldives through her words and descriptions of the area. As someone living on an island, I don't tend to get jealous of fictional people who are on vacation on an island...but this time I was! The Maldives is definitely now on my travel bucket list.

I also really liked the layers of mystery built into the book, the multiple storylines which I could feel mounting into one big reveal. It kept me on my toes, waiting for the big reveal. I will say that around the fifty percent point, I did figure out the 'whodunit' aspect, which took away just a smidge of excitement for me. However, in the long run, this did not put me off from finishing it all as it was so well-written.

In the end, I give 'Bad Tourists' a rating of 4 stars - and I must mention that the name of the novel was so spot on! Drama, sun, sea, and sand made this a great domestic thriller, which kept me going until the end. An easy read for anyone looking for something quick and fun!

*A great many thanks to Avid Reader Press, Caro Carver, and NetGalley for this ARC. It is important to note that I was not committed to providing a positive review; all opinions are undoubtedly my own.*

Three women in their 40s go on an all-expenses paid holiday to the Maldives, ostensibly to celebrate freedom after divorce. Their friendship is based on their connections to a mass murder two decades earlier. They have always suspected the man convicted of those killings did not act alone. Is his accomplice also in the Maldives?

Full of twists because not every weirdo or psychopath is obvious at first sight.
