With the semester over, I had the pleasure of finally reading this remarkable book by Arash Azizi. Arash is a true public intellectual who has his finger on the pulse of Iran’s reform and leftist movements. In this book, he introduces us to the people and events behind the slogan, “Women, Life, Freedom,” particularly explaining how Iranian women of all ethnic, religious, and class backgrounds have always been at the forefront of progressive change in the country.
Arash takes the call for “Life” seriously, too, introducing us to generations of brave Iranian environmentalists, who have been working to clean Iran’s air and waterways and save its endangered animals, like the Persian cheetah. I knew nothing about this subject and the book would be worth it for this knowledge alone. But each chapter is so important in its own way. The closing chapter, which delves into social media to relate the “manifesto” of teenager who just wanted to live a “normal” life, for example, will do more to familiarize readers with real Iranians on the ground than a thousand think pieces.
You don’t need any previous knowledge about Iran to read this book. The chapters are short, well-designed, and well-written; each is easily digestible and all cohere to draw a vision of extraordinary and ordinary Iranians who are pushing their country to be its best. The world should know them and hear them. You will close this book with renewed empathy and respect for all who fight for a more just and equitable world against all odds.
