This was one of the best music /history documentaries that I have ever seen. I was first introduced to this fascinating piece of work when watching KQED public television sometime in the early 2000's. I watched the entire series for the whole week. I was spell bound. I taped as much I could from my VCR. For years and years I played the tapes over and over again. But, you know how it is, once you start watching movies and things on DVD'S, the VCR tapes become a thing of the past. I kept checking The KQED network
trying to entertain buying the series, but it was way out of my budget .So, I went to my old faithful "Amazon" website and was able to purchase the entire DVD set (used) for an incredible price. I have never recreated it. I would recommend you check it out for yourself. I assure you it is more that just history about Blues or Blues player in America. It for me , was a true testament to good in the human spirit. When sometimes there are those that step outside of themselves ,and dare to tell the truth ,no matter how painful it might be. I commend Martin Scorsese and all those who participated in this project and saw it through until the end . Good Job

I am rating this high but I as yet, have not seen it. The company, two now, that I bought this from keep sending me the wrong operating system, PAL instead of NSTC. The movies are fantastic, I am sure but I cannot seem to get an NSTC version. Now Amazon wants me to rate it. Well, I give the films a thumbs up and fulfillment by Amazon a thumbs down. I have two copies now of the wrong operating system. Amazon seems to not be paying attention to me now. You know what? I'll try again right now. Three times a charm, right?

Scorsese is a genius. Sometimes he bites off more than he can chew. The Blues is not a story that can be told from a single perspective. Scorsese tells a great tale, excellent interviews and decent performances - but it's not the whole story, at best it's a great 'white mans history' of the blues.

I watched in terror as the British artists pulled out their big gun 'Big Bill Broonzy'. Broonzy influenced John Mayall and his disciples, a sweet blues player, but not the Moses of the blues that the British blues men believed him to be. Excuse the rant. Broonzy was a WWI veteran and a talented musician with a broad set of non- blues influences, thank heavens his take on the Blues landed in good hands.

The side trips on skiffle (sorry mates, not purely British) were excellent, but Scorsese fails to clearly put the genre in context of the key subject matter - a sad omission.

Back to reality - if you don't know where to start (who does?) this is a great spot. Take notes, read up on the artist and dig deeper. The Blues is a journey without end.

The videos are rich in material but leave you craving for more. The movies themselves run about 80-90 minutes each, covering a tremendous amount of ground but leave you with just little bits and pieces of the Blues. There are additional tracks on the DVD's but I was hoping to hear more of Ali Farka Toure and instead got more of Corey Harris. I like Harris, and I like the way Scorcese followed him on his pilgrimage from Mississippi to Mali, but Toure seemed so subdued on this recording. It would have been better to see him jam with his own musicians.
The movies are reverential in their presentation. The directors seem cautious in their approach, which surprised me given their own stature in the cinematic world. Wenders flirts with his musicians the same way he did on the Buena Vista Social Club, without revealing what really makes them tick. However, there is a great mix of music and some fantastic old footage such as a couple of pieces with Son House. But, it seems to me that Scorcese could have taken this PBS series much further.
