For those who work in the food industry, this one is an essential.

Common complaints: Blade rusts, awkward to use, feels cheap.
Response:
1.) The blade rusts because the peeler is not made of stainless steel. As someone else has already pointed out, it's carbon steel which requires more care (rinse/wash & wipe try with a kitchen towel right away) to prevent rusting. However, this makes the Kuhn Rikon peelers MUCH sharper. They also keep their edge longer than your normal metal swivel head peeler that most people are used to seeing.
2.) For new users, the kuhn rikon peeler can feel quite awkward because its Y-shape means that it is best for certain things. In the restaurant business, peeling 10gallons of potatoes for mash happens every couple days and this is the peeler to do it. The Y-peeler is best for certain tasks and requires a certain grip and technique. It takes some getting used to but once you've got it down, you'll be going through apples and potatoes like no one's business.
3.) These peelers aren't meant to be kept for years unless of course you only peel a few veggies a year. For the product intended use, these are plenty sturdy, can be thrown around, used, abused and still stay sharper for longer. Many prep cooks go through one of these every couple months just because of the sheer volume of food they prepare. So, with professional wear and tear, you're not going to keep them around forever. The reason why cooking professionals are generally so satisfied with these is that the Kuhn Rikons are the best peelers when considering working efficiency, durability and price.

Summary: If you're a home cook who only peels an apple as a snack and a few potatoes for dinner every few days, you might not want to bother with getting used to a different kind of peeler and the slightly higher maintenance. BUT if you're in the food industry, you know that you can't find what the Kuhn Rikon peelers have to offer anywhere else.

These are the standard in many a professional kitchen for a reason. They're sharp, comfortable enough to peel a 50 pound sack of potatoes, and compact enough for a drawer with a big ole hole for a tool rack peg. The blade takes off thin layers, so you're not wasting the product (but thick enough that the potato peels can go in a fryer and be oh so tasty).

I'm not a huge fan of the translucent oval ones, the opaque rounded rectangle handle seems more sturdy and feels better in my hands, but I have quite large ones. If you don't like whatever handle you got, try the other style, I'm sure they make both for a reason.

Caveat: It is a high carbon blade that needs care. It WILL rust on you if you don't take care of it, same as a real wok or a cast iron pan. Wash or rinse off immediately after use, and thoroughly shake or towel dry after and this peeler will take care of you for years with no fuss.

I received poor quality products that rusted less than a month’s use. Returning all 3 and hoping for a refund. Replacement was not possible according to Amazon. I ordered and received peelers Sept. 3rd. Tomorrow is Oct. 3rd and I’m mailing these back. I had one for years and after a kitchen renovation it’s gone or missing. I ordered on Amazon, got 3 replacements. I was really excited. But here we are a month later, all have rusted and both sides, I took a video after handwashing them. So disappointed.

UPDATE October 9th: 2nd set

Good news. After having returned rusted peelers, a new set was quickly shipped.

Hand washed, air dried, and used it.

Bad news. Five days later, rust appeared. Only used 2 of the 3 but all three were in various stages of rusts.

Most definitely returning again and asking for refund.

These days if you go to a big box store (or dollar store) you are faced with numerous kitchen utensils claiming to be usable to peel fruits and vegetables. Inevitably after trying them you discover a flaw in the design. Either they cut too deeply, creating thick peels and a lot of waste, or they are awkward to use. I bought three of these because we've used them in the past and they are perfect for the job. The price is a bit high for a small piece of metal and a plastic handle, but worth it when you consider how much better they work. If only some of the less expensive competition could catch on to the better design of this peeler.
