Stephen Fry Greek Myths Series Collection 3 Books Set:
Troy:
The story of Troy speaks to all of us - the kidnapping of Helen, a queen celebrated for her beauty, sees the Greeks launch a thousand ships against that great city, to which they will lay siege for ten whole and very bloody years. It is Zeus, the king of the gods, who triggers war when he asks the Trojan prince Paris to judge the fairest goddess of them all. Aphrodite bribes Paris with the heart of Helen, wife of King Menelaus of the Greeks, and naturally, nature takes its course.
Heroes:
In this companion to his bestselling Mythos, Stephen Fry brilliantly retells these dramatic, funny, tragic and timeless tales.Join Jason aboard the Argo as he quests for the Golden Fleece. See Atalanta - who was raised by bears - outrun any man before being tricked with golden apples. Witness wily Oedipus solve the riddle of the Sphinx and discover how Bellerophon captures the winged horse Pegasus to help him slay the monster Chimera.Filled with white-knuckle chases and battles, impossible puzzles and riddles, acts of base cowardice and real bravery, not to mention murders and selfless sacrifices, Heroes is the story of what we mortals are truly capable of - at our worst and our very best.
Mythos:
In Stephen Fry's vivid retelling, we gaze in wonder as wise Athena is born from the cracking open of the great head of Zeus and follow doomed Persephone into the dark and lonely realm of the Underworld. We shiver in fear when Pandora opens her jar of evil torments and watch with joy as the legendary love affair between Eros and Psyche unfolds.Mythos captures these extraordinary myths for our modern age - in all their dazzling and deeply human relevance.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 December 2024These books were a gift so I haven't read them, but they were gratefully received.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 December 2024They seem like something I will enjoy but I haven't had time to read them yet.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 September 2024Still onthe first book, but is a great source to understand greek mythology and its impact on the language.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 July 2023I know Stephen Fry can divide opinion, but I'm a huge fan of his writing. Across these 3 books, he demonstrates his scholarly knowledge (and appreciation) of the Greek myths. I studied classics at school, but they were never brought to life as vividly as they are in these books. You may well be familiar with many of the stories, but Fry's wry commentary adds depth to the tales and puts them in a modern context.
I was absolutely hooked from the first paragraph. As Fry himself frequently admonishes throughout the books, don't get hung up on remembering the myriad confusing names; the important ones will stick. It is amazing how these myths form the cornerstone of many aspects of modern western civilisation
I've passed the books on to my teenage daughter, who having graduated from Percy Jackson is now loving them too!
A top recommendation.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 December 2023Only commenting on the packageing as it's for a present: not really a book set , just the three books wrapped in plastic.
I initially thought it was a special edition with a nice packaging.
So it's actually cheaper getting them separately...
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 September 2023I have always lover Greek mythology, but bought these for my 12yr old son who lived the Percy Jackson books… thought these would challenge him to read to a higher level and he lived them! Added bonus is he has now given to me to read and I am loving them as well! Stephen Fry is a national treasure and I would highly recommend these to anyone who loves mythology!
