4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 124 ratings

From the bestselling author of Blackwood Institute and Sabre Security comes a dark, enemies to lovers why choose romance featuring a strong-willed heroine on a quest for revenge... no matter the cost.

“Look into the camera, Ripley.
Tell us what happened in Harrowdean Manor.”

Serving a three-year sentence after a violent manic episode, I own this psychiatric institute and every last patient in it.

Dealing contraband to the desperate and disturbed has earned me this kingdom. To survive, I simply sacrificed my soul.

They all fear me.
Worship me.
Hate me.

But no more than the demons I barely escaped last year. They thought they’d broken me with their greed and depravity. Instead, they made me ruthless.

Now, my enemies are back.
And they’re out for blood.

Lennox wants to kill me.
Xander wants to break me.
Raine just wants to feel alive.

But in here, it’s kill or be killed. As the horrifying reality behind Harrowdean’s lies starts to surface, a bloody battle for survival begins.

Their social experiment is set to burn.
And I’m the one holding the matches.

Author’s Note: Sin Like The Devil (Harrowdean Manor #1) is a dark, why choose romance and book one in a duet. It does end on a cliffhanger. Set in the J Rose shared universe.

J Rose never fails to sweep me off my feet in the most shocking of ways, and Sin Like The Devil was no exception. What I love about this author’s writing is she has the ability to pull emotions out of her readers that no one expects, and she makes you fall for the villains.I was curious how the Harrowdean Manor series would be written so that it wasn’t just a repeat of Blackwood Institute, but I should have known not to be worried. This story follows Ripley in the present day as she sits down to interview about her experiences at Harrowdean, and the story is written as an account of her sentence. I thoroughly enjoyed the perspective of someone working on the inside as opposed to just an average patient as it gave more twists and turns that I wasn’t expecting and reveals just how messed up Incendia is.And when her past comes back to haunt her… holy I was not prepared. Lennox and Xander are the monsters from her past back from the grave to make her life a living hell once more. They are the guys you love to hate and hate to love… which is exactly how Ripley feels about them too. Raine was a lovely edition to the mix of menacing chaos, being the friend Ripley so desperately needed. I also enjoyed the well-written disability rep in this book with Raine’s blindness. As with all of J Rose’s books, mental health plays such an important part, which is what I adore about her writing. Her writing has a way of bringing you to the darkest of places, breaking down her characters wholly before rebuilding them into something new—and usually stronger. This book might be one of my favourites yet, and I can’t wait to see where the rest of this series goes! Thank you to the author and Valentine PR for a complimentary copy of this book.

This book was not what I expected at all and I loved it. I was enraptured when I first read the Blackwood Institute trilogy so when this shared world duo was announced I knew I had to dive it. You don’t have to read the trilogy before but I would highly recommend.

I don’t know what it is about how J Rose writes her characters, they just stick with you. You can feel their pain, their struggles, their highs and lows and it’s like you’re right beside them. You will love some characters and hate others and although you know some kind of HEA is going to happen (eventually), the journey the author takes you on… it’s hard to describe.

I can’t wait for the finale and I hope there will be another shared world follow up.

J Rose is one of my auto reads. Everything she writes I have to have and this continuation of the Incendia Corp/Sabre Security world is beautifully dark and twisted. Just the way I like it.
This duology is based at Harrowdean Manor another one of Incendia Corps rehab hospitals for convicted criminals. Which is as terrifying as it sounds. Everything about these books is dark, depraved and full of trauma.....check your triggers. This story is about revenge, torture and survival.
I love how J always represents all walks of life, in this story we meet Raine who is a drug addict who was blinded during a drug episode. Lennox & Xander round out the rest of our why choose grouping. Our girl Ripley is a strong FMC that is dealing with being a manic/depressive quite poorly I might add. All in all this messed up foursome somehow finds each other and through all their individual traumas and depravedness they seem to fall for each other. Meant to be.
J's why choose stories are always spicy but the storylines are all so original and twisted you literally can't put them down. I know every time I pick up one of her books that I will LOVE it and will pine for the next one. Can't wait.

HO-LY H.E. Double L Wow! This book!! This freaking masterpiece of a book is so insanely good! I literally just finished it and I. Am. Shook! I can’t even find words right now to describe how incredibly great this book was!

I’ve loved all of J. Rose’s books so far. There’s no denying she’s an incredibly talented author who can write books featuring mental health institutes and patients like no other! But this book has got to be my new favourite! There truly are no hero’s in this book. Every character is flawed and they do whatever it takes to survive the life they’ve been dealt to live in the corrupted facility that is Harrowdean Manor. But I’m rooting for each and every one of these poor, tortured souls!

This book is not for the light of heart. It’s dark and messy but it’s also thrilling in the sense that you never know what to expect from these characters. It will certainly keep you on your toes! And I have to say, that while the end of the book is rough and bloody, I had the biggest smile on my face when I got to the last page! I’m beyond excited to find out how this duet will end when Burn Like an Angel is released!

I have loved J Rose for a very long time, and this book just reiterates why she’s one of my favourites. I was fully immersed the entire time I was reading it. It’s a story of revenge and of survival, and I never wanted it to end.

The characters J Rose writes have so much depth to them that it can be heartbreaking to read, sometimes. Ripely, Lennox, Raine and Xander are all incredibly complex.

Ripely is strong. There’s no denying that. The things she’s had to do to survive are not for the weak. She’s not always likeable, but she is fierce.

Raine must be protected at all costs. The flirtatious, broken rockstar. His character is so loveable but his struggles tore at my heart.

One thing I love about J Rose’s books is that mental health is so very well represented. It’s clear the amount of understanding and respect she has, and I’m in awe of she portrays it.

To put it simply - Sin Like The Devil will make you feel. Anger, heartbreak, love, happiness, compassion- You will go through it all. It will stick with you and you will be begging more.

This book was so awesome. It ties in nicely with the Blackwood.

Ripley was such an awesome character I loved her take no crap attitude with most of the medical staff. Also she still had a heart and really didn’t wanna do what she was doing in my opinion. I love how she changed her mind on things when she met Raine. It was love at first sight with her even though throughout the book she try’s to play it off to herself.

Raine was such a sweet character he’s also one that still will always tell you what’s what regardless of his eye sight. I loved how he was soft on Ripley from day one. Those two were such fresh air in a dark time with the characters. His nickname for her was adorable. You could tell how much they liked each other throughout the book. By the end they would do basically anything for each other.

Lennox he’s a set in his own way kinda character. He knows what’s right and wrong and no one is gonna change his mind. His first in counter with Ripley was great especially when she attacked him an Raine had the smirk on his face. As the book went on he was confronted by his feelings he has for Ripley that he absolutely didn’t want but in the end gave in. With Ripley and Lennox they’re got a cold but both wanted each other.

Xander he was my favorite psychopath. All the composure he had with everything going on was great. The relationship between him and the two guys was amazing he was like the leader who kept them in line especially Lennox well he tried to Raine didn’t need to be kept in line. He was infatuated with Ripley from day one. He tried to act as if he didn’t care about her but she broke his shell and he started feeling again.

The chemistry with the characters is really good we each one has a specific relationship with the other one neither has the same with the other. They behind the scenes with what was happening with the medical staff that they find out was great how it all came about it felt like they all needed that push to confront their feelings for one another. They knew what was happening but had their investigation to get more information and who was involved.

The surprise at the end I don’t see at all now I’m wondering who they’re looking for unless I missed it. This book is extremely dark an extremely awesome. It’s also RH an has lots of TW in it so if you have any please read the Trigger Warnings Before you start.

I have been dying for this book since the moment it was announced, and have been impatiently waiting for this, s0 I just had to begin this as soon as this came in and this book did not disappoint.

At this point, I will devour any book by J Rose without question, I absolutely adore her writing style and her books always blow me away and have me experiencing a range of emotions.

I would recommend beginning with The Blackwood Institute, this book is a part of the shared universe and there are also mentions of characters in Sabre Security although this can be read in any order, I would recommend reading these in order for the best reading experience.

This book was absolutely everything to me, this is a true enemies to lovers romance, these characters (bar Raine) absolutely hate each other and there is also a substantial revenge plot in this book. Typically I do not read books with revenge plots very often but she masterfully weaves this plot and in my opinion this was done perfectly, the push and pull between these characters was phenomenal and when they break, I couldn't help but fan girl.

These characters are extremely traumatised in their own way and you cannot help but fall for these characters immediately. These characters are morally grey, and they are anti-heroes and I loved that this also applies very much to our FMC Ripley as well as the MMC's.

I highly highly recommend picking this up, I absolutely devoured this so quickly and I already want to read this again from the very beginning. I cannot wait to see how this continues in book two.

5 ⭐ - tbh just all the stars

This book is the first book in the Harrowdean Manor duet and it was such an amazing read. J Rose’s writing is so special and I fall in love with it, her stories, and all of her characters every single time. And this time was no different.

What I think is so special about J Rose's writing is that she can make me go through every emotion possible while reading her books. From being anxious to being angry to being devastated to being in love, I went through everything in this book. The way that she makes me sympathize with even the most psychopathic characters and fall in love with them as well as going through the stages of hating a character to sympathising with them to finally loving them is something so special.

Sin Like The Devil is set, time-wise, during the second and third books of the Blackwood Institute trilogy - giving us some of the scenes that happened in BI from the Harrowdean Manor perspective. And while it had a similar vibe to Blackwood since both of those books played in these corrupt psych wards that the same corporation funded, it had such a different feel to it - Blackwood gave us a bit more time before we jumped into the violence and the angst that came with everything that happened in the institute. In contrast, with Harrowdean we jumped straight into the time where everything felt very uncertain. The manor was on high alert with a lot of violence and volatile feelings happening from the get go.

Ripley, Lennox, Raine, and Xander are all so special and different, each having their own issues and then bringing their issues and feelings towards each other into the mix, making it such an explosive situation. And I can’t wait to read more about them and how their relationships will develop in the setting that they are in in the next book.

Book: Sin Like The Devil by J Rose

Well, J Rose did it again!! I just freaking love her books so much 🖤

"𝘚𝘶𝘳𝘷𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘭 𝘪𝘴 𝘢 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨. 𝘚𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘴, 𝘪𝘵 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘴 𝘢 𝘸𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘵 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧-𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯."

This book is so good, in every way there is! It is painfully well written. The emotions, the inner monolog, the struggles, the horrifying things that happen!

J Rose has a way of making you feel as if you're right there inside the book! Experiencing the horrors of Harrowdean Manor

"𝘐’𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘮𝘢𝘥𝘦 𝘮𝘦. 𝘉𝘰𝘳𝘯 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘣𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘥 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵𝘺 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘦, 𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘢𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘢𝘯 𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘰𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘦𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘨𝘰𝘢𝘭. 𝘍𝘰𝘳 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦, 𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘪𝘴𝘯’𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤. 𝘈𝘭𝘭 𝘸𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘳𝘢𝘨𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘬𝘦𝘦𝘱 𝘶𝘴 𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘮 𝘢𝘵 𝘯𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵."

Ripley is the definition of a anti-hero, who wouldn't be after everything she's gone through! And then there's the three men who are probably as unhinged as she is, all fighting their own battles. But on top of that the need to somehow survive is strong!! Hatred goes hand in hand with love, they might need each other more then they realize!

"𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵’𝘴 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘪𝘴, 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵? 𝘈 𝘮𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘭 𝘢𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘺 𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩 𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳."

I loved diving back into the world of Blackwood Institute! This world means so much to me, I absolutely love these books!

Thank you so much J Rose for sending me a copy 🖤 I absolutely loved it!!!
