The classic road signs of Britain were designed by Jock Kinneir and Margaret Calvert in the early 1960s, and first appeared on Britains roads in 1965. They favoured pictograms rather than words on the signs, and Calvert drew most of them in a distinctive minimalist style, with many of the illustrations drawn from her own life. This simple and effective system of signs is still keeping people safe and informed more than 50 years after it was created, and they do the job so well that we don’t even notice them. Jock Kinneir, who died in 1994, was resigned to this fact. In 1965, he acknowledged that the designs fulfilled their function so efficiently that the public would take them for granted. In this image we see a sign indicating that the road is without a pavement or sidewalk. The design shows a man on foot holding a child by the hand, clearly warning both motorists and pedestrians to proceed with caution along a shared stretch of road.
