This study aimed to explore the coverage of different news categories in daily Dawn and Twitter. For comparative content analysis of news coverage, the researcher drew upon two news categories: econo-political news, and socio-cultural news. The econo-political news category was further divided into three subcategories: national politics, international politics, and economics. The socio-cultural category was divided into five sub-categories: health, education, arts, sports, and environment. The ‘priming’ in agenda setting theory paved the way for the researcher to explore the dominant news categories. For daily Dawn, the headlines of news stories published in February were selected. For twitter, all top trends in the month of February between 11am to 8 pm daily were recorded; they were accessed via an online website. The data was divided into four weeks. The comparative analysis supported both hypotheses: the results indicated that mainstream media gives more coverage to econo-political affairs than social media; whereas, social media is better at highlighting socio-cultural issues than mainstream media.

This study offers an innovative lens through which scholars and healthcare providers may examine the experiences of BRCA previvors as they seek adequate care. Asking previvors to explain their perceptions of conversations with genetic counselors and healthcare providers offers insight into the communicative process of seeking care rather than the health outcomes of the care itself. Our findings suggest biases among providers related to gender, age, and sexual orientation are concerning elements of family planning communication that potentially interrupt previvors' abilities to express their care needs in a safe environment. We argue for an increased awareness of, and advocacy for, more inclusive conversations regarding treatment and family planning decisions.

In the contemporary global context, characterized by political crises and a
weakened democracy due to the impact of populism and disinformation,
the Russian invasion of Ukraine poses a new challenge to the public sphere. The social, economic, and geopolitical ramifications of the conflict at a global level remain uncertain. However, public perception has been influenced by new forms of leadership and emotion-based communication. This research employs a content analysis methodology to examine the digital discourse of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the Telegram platform during the first year of the war. This messaging network promotes one-way communication, immediacy, and access to active follower communities. The results from analyzing his 2,089 posts demonstrate the predominance of strategies directed
towards the internationalisation of the conflict and mobilizing support of
Ukraine. Furthermore, the analysis of emotions reveals the presence of values such as gratitude, hope, and pride, aimed at constructing Zelensky’s image as a heroic figure in the digitised society of the 21st century.

Catalina de Erauso, personaje histórico conocido como “la monja alférez”, ha sido representado de diversas maneras según quién lo retratara y con qué propósito. Es por ello que, después de hacer un sintético repaso a las diferentes aproximaciones a esta figura, se propone examinar los discursos y las representaciones realizadas en tres exposiciones artísticas llevadas a cabo en Londres 2021, Barcelona 2021 y Bilbao 2022. Para, de esa manera, darnos cuenta de que las perspectivas transfeministas y decoloniales van dejando huella en su simbolización estos últimos años. Y así, concluir que es de vital importancia recrear los mitos históricos y culturales con sus luces y sus sombras.

As more journalists rely on social media platforms like Twitter to gather information and report the news, scholars have identified an increasing tension between traditional journalistic values and reporters’ construction of online personas. Moreover, networked journalists build these mediated personas—following platforms’ affordances—to better engage with fellow journalists and algorithmic audiences. Drawing on data from 15 in-depth interviews with Kosovar Albanian political journalists and editors, this article offers a unique perspective by examining the negotiation process between professional standards and journalists’ online personas on Twitter. Via their online personas, influenced by the audience and the platforms’ affordances and logic, journalists and editors have given rise to new role conceptions and standards in local political journalism. The results show that political journalists and editors in Kosovo view Twitter as a platform where they can display both professional and personal layers of their identity. Furthermore, they feel unrestricted by journalistic standards, taking on roles outside the traditional scope of journalism: as good citizens, they express opinions on political issues; as activists, they advocate for personally meaningful causes; but they also see themselves as mordant critics of political figures.

Online harassment against media workers has been on the rise, prompting academic and international organizations to call for comprehensive measures that could protect journalists from intimidation and threats on social media platforms. Despite these efforts, research shows little success in curbing the issue of hostility towards media professionals. With this article, we aim to explore journalists’ perceptions regarding online harassment and the responsibility that they attribute to the media organizations they work for, as well as digital platforms for allowing violence to spread online. Our study is based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted in two Chilean newsrooms, including interviews with media professionals responsible for moderating hate. This article discusses the experiences of reporters who have faced online threats and attacks while reporting the news. Our findings show that digital platforms have provided new opportunities for violent behavior against journalists. More remarkably, some journalists are worried that their media organizations might prefer to benefit from the increased engagement and metrics that come with such aggressive actions. Our findings shed light on the challenges journalists face in the digital age and the need for more significant protection measures.

In  the  realm  of  sports,  fan  engagement  has become  a pivotal  element  for  enhancing  the overall  experience  and  maximizing  revenue opportunities.  This  paper  explores  the application  of  machine  learning  models  to predict fan engagement during sports events, offering  insights  that  can  inform  marketing strategies,  game-day  operations,  and  fan interaction initiatives. Utilizing historical data on  fan  behavior,  attendance,  social  media interactions,  and  game  statistics,  various machine  learning  algorithms—such  as regression analysis, decision trees, and neural networks—are employed to develop predictive models. These models are designed to identify patterns in fan engagement and forecast future behaviors, allowing teams and event organizers to tailor their marketing efforts and improve fan experiences.Additionally,  the  study  highlights  the importance of real-time data analysis, enabling stakeholders to make informed decisions during events. By integrating these predictive models with live data feeds, sports organizations can dynamically adjust their engagement strategies, ensuring they resonate with fans' preferences and expectations. The findings underscore the potential of machine learning to revolutionize fan  engagement,  transforming  passive spectators into active participants. Ultimately, this  research  contributes  to  a  deeper understanding of how technology can enhance the  sports  experience,  fostering  loyalty  and increasing overall satisfaction among fans. The implications  of  these  models  extend  beyond individual teams, providing a framework that can be  adapted  across  various  sports disciplines, ultimately enriching the landscape of sports marketing and fan interaction.

En el entorno empresarial actual, las organizaciones están en constante proceso de cambio y tienen que ser flexibles e innovadoras,
cuidando el bienestar de sus trabajadores. Acontecimientos como la pandemia han puesto de manifiesto la necesidad de considerar nuevas perspectivas para abordar la gestión de los recursos humanos. Las analíticas de recursos humanos (ARH) son herramientas que ayudan a entender y
aplicar mejores políticas en este ámbito. Sin embargo, muchas de las revisiones de la literatura sobre ARH solo analizan lo publicado hasta 2021 y,
además, para la identificación de las temáticas estudiadas no suelen considerar diferentes periodos temporales, que ayudarían a entender mejor
la evolución de las temáticas. Por ello, el objetivo de este trabajo es presentar una imagen estructurada y por periodos de los principales temas
estudiados sobre ARH y proponer otros nuevos para la investigación futura. Los resultados obtenidos se han agrupado en las siguientes categorías
temáticas: contexto, aspectos internos, herramientas, aplicaciones y efectos. A partir de estos resultados, se han identificado dos temas novedosos:
la gestión del cambio y la gestión de la felicidad, y se han propuesto dos modelos teóricos para la adopción de ARH, uno de toma de decisiones y
otro sobre cambio organizativo. Estos modelos pueden servir como punto de partida para futuras investigaciones y tienen una aplicación directa
como herramienta de ayuda en la toma de decisiones en las empresas.

El objetivo de este estudio fue analizar empíricamente las relaciones entre las dimensiones justicia organizacional, satisfacción laboral y
compromiso organizacional con la felicidad laboral y la intención de rotar en trabajadores del ámbito docente en México. Con este fin, se encuestó
a una muestra de 393 profesores de educación superior en México. Para analizar los datos se utilizó la técnica estadística de ecuaciones estructurales por CB-SEM. Los resultados alcanzados de este estudio muestran, por un lado, que las variables satisfacción laboral, compromiso organizacional y justicia organizacional están relacionados entre sí en este tipo de trabajadores, y por el otro, que estas variables explican positivamente la felicidad laboral y negativamente la intención de rotar. Esta información es relevante para que los máximos responsables de las universidades emprendan una dirección estratégica orientada al happiness management. De este modo, su capital humano podrá desempeñar sus actividades profesionales en un entorno de emociones positivas, creatividad, alegría y bienestar subjetivo.

Social networks have become in recent years as essential elements to building political discourses,
especially in electoral periods. Political parties develop specific strategies to communicating with their
constituents through these platforms, based on leadership and the use of emotions. This research aims
to analyze the communication strategies deployed by political leaders on X during the Andalusian Parliament election campaign in 2022, and for this purpose, a quantitative and qualitative content analysis
methodology is applied to a sample of 690 tweets in the personal accounts of the candidates of the six
parties with parliamentary representation. An advance of the results points to a communicative planning previously designed, that builds a discourse based on thematic lines, strategies, approaches and,
especially, feelings according to the ideological, programmatic, and mobilizing axis established by each
political formation.

Las redes sociales se han convertido en los últimos años en elementos esenciales a la hora de construir
los discursos políticos, especialmente en periodos electorales. Los partidos políticos desarrollan estrategias específicas para comunicarse con sus electores a través de estas plataformas, basadas en el liderazgo
y el uso de las emociones. Esta investigación tiene como objetivo analizar las estrategias comunicativas
desplegadas por los líderes políticos en X durante la campaña de las elecciones al Parlamento de Andalucía en 2022 y para ello se aplica una metodología de análisis de contenido cuantitativo y cualitativo sobre
una muestra de 690 tuits en las cuentas personales de los candidatos de los seis partidos con representación parlamentaria. Un avance de los resultados apunta a una planificación comunicativa previamente
diseñada, que construye un discurso basado en líneas temáticas, estrategias, enfoques y, especialmente,
sentimientos según el eje ideológico, programático y movilizador establecido por cada formación.

This study demonstrates how the social media can be used for political mobilization, using the obidient movement as a case study. The emergence of the Obidient Movement in Nigeria has been intimately associated with the way in which the development of social media platforms has revolutionised political communication. This article looks at how social media affects political mobilisation in Nigeria, with a particular emphasis on the remarkable role that technology-driven communication played in the Obidient Movement's success. The conventional boundaries of political campaigning have been rewritten with the rise of social media, giving non-traditional influencers, grassroots activism, and digital activism a greater chance to shape political discourse and election outcomes. The study employed the Uses and Gratification theory, to deduce how citizens were mobilized via social media to join the obidient movement. To achieve this, the study relied on qualitative research method that examines and synthesizes extant literature on political mobilization and the particular relevant literature on social media and political mobilization. The outcome of the study shows that despite the proliferation of fake news and misinformation on social media, it served as a tool for political mobilization for the obidient movement, as obidients used social media to form alliances, crowdfund, mobilse political support and interact with a wider audience. By exploring the pivotal role of social media in the recent Nigerian election, this article illuminates the transformative potential of these platforms in reshaping political mobilization and generating support for previously underrepresented political forces in the nation.

This study investigates the intersection of racism, security ideology, and digital platforms in the context of the digital age, with a particular focus on YouTube. By analyzing the content of the most-watched YouTube videos from 2024, the research aims to uncover how digital platforms contribute to the reproduction and dissemination of racist narratives. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining content analysis with correlation analysis, to examine the relationships between themes such as stereotyping, racism, and security ideology. Using MAXQDA Analytics Pro, over 500,000 words from video comments and transcripts were systematically analyzed, leading to the identification of key themes that were further explored through Python-based correlation analysis. The findings reveal strong positive correlations between these themes, indicating that racist and stereotypical content is often intertwined with security rhetoric. This study highlights the role of digital platforms in perpetuating global power imbalances and emphasizes the need for more ethical algorithms, stricter content moderation, and increased digital literacy to mitigate the spread of harmful ideologies. The implications of this research suggest that digital colonialism continues to marginalize certain groups, reinforcing existing inequalities in the global digital landscape.

This paper describes two related practices of handwashing: the everyday ritual whose importance was heightened with the emergence of COVID-19, and the religious practice embedded in rituals of shrine and visitation which underwent changes due to COVID-19. In order to do so, it draws on everyday experience and observation as well as media sources (autoethnography as well as netnography), both research methodologies whose importance has been inevitably heightened during these pandemic times when social distancing measures preclude more participatory methods. The Japanese government produced media for handwashing promotion, developing unique cute characters as well as tie-ups with established character franchises. A local action hero franchise had already been promoting proper handwashing techniques in 2019, before COVID-19 was an issue; this concern continued during an interval in which a public festival was held in 2020 and to the present. Miyazaki in southern Kyushu is the physical locus for the study, as well as the internet, in the global context that handwashing took on greater significance in daily life during the period of study (Spring 2020 to 2022).

Marka nefreti, tüketicilerin bir markaya karşı beslediği olumsuz duyguları tanımlayan bir terimdir. Bu durum tüketiciler ile marka arasındaki ilişkilerin zayıf olmasına, marka açısından mali kayıplara, itibar ve imaj kaybına neden olabilir. Günümüzde küreselleşme ve teknolojik gelişmeler ile her sektörde görülebilen marka nefretinin araştırılması bu nedenle markaların strateji geliştirebilmeleri için önem taşımaktadır. Bu araştırmanın amacı, sembolik uyuşmazlık, ideolojik uyuşmazlık ve olumsuz geçmiş deneyimler gibi marka nefretinin öncül değişkenlerinin tüketicilerin memnun kalmadığı çeşitli gıda ürünleri özelinde marka nefreti, marka kaçınması ve olumsuz ağızdan ağıza iletişim gibi sonuçlara neden olup olmadığını tespit etmektir. Bu doğrultuda kantitatif ve tanımsal bir araştırma tasarımı yapılmıştır. Kolayda ve kartopu örnekleme yöntemleri ile 191 katılımcıdan toplanan veriler LISREL 8.8 ve SPSS 25.0 paket programları kullanılarak doğrulayıcı faktör analizi, yapısal eşitlik modeli ve yol analizi gibi ileri bazı analiz yöntemleri ile analiz edilmiştir. Çalışmanın bulgularına göre, sembolik ve ideolojik uyuşmazlıkların marka nefretini olumlu etkilediği ve olumsuz geçmiş deneyimlerin ise marka nefreti üzerinde anlamlı bir etkisinin olmadığı sonucuna varılmıştır. Ayrıca, marka nefretinin marka kaçınması ve olumsuz ağızdan ağıza iletişim gibi sonuçlara neden olduğu tespit edilmiştir.

La sociedad digital ha propiciado cambios de carácter instrumental y una actualización de la epistemología que ayuda a comprender un nuevo espacio público en dónde interactúan partidos políticos, instituciones, medios de comunicación y ciudadanía. Esta tesis doctoral por compendio de publicaciones estudia los mensajes en Twitter de diecinueve candidatos, de diez televisiones y de más de medio millón de usuarios en diez elecciones presidenciales latinoamericanas celebradas entre los años 2015 y 2019, con el objetivo de analizar el proceso de construcción de las agendas políticas digitales. A través de la técnica del análisis de contenido y del análisis de redes sociales (social network analysis), se han introducido variables como la frecuencia de actividad, temas, el tipo de usos políticos de la red social, la polarización y las emociones para explicar el comportamiento de actores políticos y comunidades digitales. Entre los resultados más relevantes destacan principalmente cinco: en primer lugar, el uso de Twitter por parte de los candidatos latinoamericanos sigue un modelo de marketing político poco profesionalizado, intuitivo y que no tiene en cuenta las potencialidades de la red social; en segundo término, las democracias latinoamericanas con un carácter más consolidado tienden a generar agendas de temas más cohesionadas, independientemente de la ideología del candidato; posteriormente, el modelo de paralelismo también se expande al espacio digital, reforzando la coalición temática entre medios y candidatos con un cierto control político manifestado a través de mecanismos formales que pautan el ejercicio de producción de la información (encuadres),  en el que las comunidades son las que realizan una exposición selectiva; en cuarto lugar, se constata un modelo de comportamiento de los usuarios con una generación acompasada de emociones entre todas las comunidades estatales (contagio emocional), lo que en cierta medida rompe la idea de cámara de eco totalmente estanca; finalmente, se presenta una polarización intrínseca a las características de la red y no preconstruida. Si bien existen ciertos impulsos en cuanto al aumento y disminución de la polarización, esta no se sostiene y se acaba autorregulando. Esto genera una nueva defensa de la tesis del modelo innato de la polarización, volviendo a reabrir el debate sobre la “caja negra” de las redes sociales, que en alguna literatura ya parecía cerrada.

The objective of The Routledge Handbook of Political Communication in Ibero America is to identify and understand the meaning of changes in political communication in Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula, understood as geographical spaces with political, cultural, and social links. This book is structured in nine multi-chapter parts, with each addressing a relevant area of political communication or focusing on a specific geographic area within Ibero-America. Thus, a journey is traced from broad theoretical issues, such as media systems, agenda-setting, political discourse, or political polarisation, among others, to specific applications in different countries in the region. Overall, 74 authors affiliated with 49 universities and academic institutions from 18 countries have contributed to this volume. This Handbook identifies certain transversal features that have emerged as attributes of political communication research in Ibero-America. First, one of the main conclusions is that this region is highly plural. Another transversal aspect that this Handbook reveals is the ambivalent impact of digital platforms on Ibero-American political communication. Additionally, another fundamental axis that this volume identifies is the rise of populism in Ibero-American political communication in recent years. Finally, is the uneven technological evolution registered in the different countries of Ibero-America.

Resumo: Este artigo dialoga com os dados de uma pesquisa etnográfica virtual, oriundos de um grupo focal online, realizado com 17 mulheres jovens usuárias do aplicativo Instagram. Analisa-se a produção de sentidos sobre as selfies enquanto práticas culturais implicadas em processos subjetivos e identitários. As análises elucidam o caráter narrativo e performático das selfies, mediante as quais os sujeitos experienciam a si mesmos e seus corpos em busca de visibilidade e aprovação social. O texto trata, ainda, sobre as visualizações, curtidas e comentários enquanto intencionalidades dessas práticas e os efeitos que produzem nas subjetividades. Conclui-se que a identidade se desloca da estabilidade para uma identidade que carrega traços da era hipermoderna: efêmera, volátil e experimental.

Abstract: This article discusses data from a virtual ethnographic study conducted in an online focus group with 17 young women who use the Instagram app. It analyzes the production of meanings about selfies as cultural practices involved in subjective and identity processes. It elucidates the narrative and performative nature of selfies, through which individuals experience themselves and their bodies in pursuit of social visibility and approval. The analysis also addresses the intentionalities behind likes, views, and comments, and their effects on subjectivities. The conclusion posits that identity shifts from stability to a hypermodern era's traits: ephemeral, volatile, and experimental.

Communication is indispensable for the continuation of relationships. We are exposed to dozens of advertisements as a part of mass communication almost every day. Thanks to advertisements, the main purpose of which is promotion, people are informed about a product, given information about that product, and eventually enabled to buy the product. The attractiveness of an advertisement depends on the text, color, music, and people used in the advertisement being well chosen. These elements are considered in detail when creating advertisements, which are a form of narrative. Because through narratives, people communicate with each other and find the opportunity to express themselves. An advertisement narrative also tells many things to its recipient. However, it is necessary to analyze well what the advertisement tells and what the target audience understands. Semiotics is the right method to serve this purpose.
In this study, general information about advertisements, which are considered as a style of narrative, is given. Then the relationship between advertising and semiotics is mentioned. How the semiotics method can be used in the analysis of advertisements is shown through the example. Peirce's triadic of 'Icon, Index, Symbol' which are signs in terms of their object is chosen for semiotic analysis. In this context, Nikon Advertisement Poster was analyzed with semiotic analysis and the findings obtained were interpreted. The study is considered to be important in terms of being an example of how meaning is constructed and how to analyze an advertisement poster.

This brief report examines the Heisman Trophy Trust's image repair strategies following the controversial statement made after O.J. Simpson's passing on April 11, 2024. The Trust's condolence tweet sparked widespread backlash on social media due to Simpson's legal history, with users comparing his treatment to that of Reggie Bush, who had previously forfeited his Heisman Trophy. The Trust's subsequent decision to reinstate Bush's trophy was viewed as a strategic response to the controversy. Using William Benoit's Image Repair Theory (IRT), this report analyzes how the Trust employed transcendence, a strategy aimed at shifting the narrative from negative associations to positive achievements. The Trust's actions not only addressed the backlash but also underscored evolving public sentiment around NCAA regulations and athlete recognition. This study provides insights into crisis management and reputation repair within sports organizations and highlights the complex interplay between media, public perception, and institutional response.

This article examines the relationship between social networks, protest and memory. It begins by focusing on activists' attempts to supplement official narratives before going on to explore the way the digital offers mechanisms that both ameliorate and heighten the fear of forgetting. It goes beyond an investigation of the role played by 'activists' in these dynamics and reflects upon the memory work undertaken by 'ordinary people'. These arguments are underpinned by an analysis of Black Lives Matter hashtags such as #SayHisName. It argues that the ubiquitous and repetitious sharing of tweets in which the names of those who have died at the hands of the police are hashtagged should be understood as an online commemorative practice similar to that undertaken at in real world vigils. Finally, it highlights the way in which the hashtag #SayHerName draws the public's attention to persistent intersectional inequalities and so expands activist and ordinary people's understandings of police violence in America and beyond. This article concludes by suggesting that the hashtag #SayTheirNames both recalls the individuals who have already died and anticipates the deaths that are yet to come in an effortful and ritualised moment of not forgetting that Black Lives Matter.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, social networks were flooded with overwhelming information. This study focused on the interaction between science and society as this took place via Twitter. State of the art algorithmic sentiment analysis was employed to examine the communication between pharmaceutical companies and the public, to analyze the profile of the posts originating from the pharmaceutical companies and to highlight the users' response to the conveyed messages. Findings indicate the promotion of a positive agenda by the pharmaceutical companies which spawned variable reactions from the users. The predominant part of the public's response consisted of retweets that endorsed the positive attitude of the companies while the users that responded with actions of higher level of determination such as quotes or replies, enhanced mostly the circulation of messages representing emotions of surprise and fear. The results of our analysis are in accordance with recent general studies of sentiment analysis during the pandemic.

With the advancement of technology, increasing use of social media, and declining trust in mainstream media, which is dominated by moguls, as well as the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak which has taken hold of the world, various journalism practices have undergone some changes. In this process, ordinary citizens have sought alternatives; the citizen journalism concept in digital media platforms has emerged and started to be used progressively. This thesis focuses on the Turkish Twittersphere and delves into the influences of citizen journalism, which has eventually led to mainstream media outlets’ presence on the Twittersphere. Ordinary citizens engage in plentiful debates and discussions by contributing to overall interaction, whether active or passive. In that context, mixed content analysis is employed by retrieving data in four up-to date categories, namely health, climate, economy, and Europeanization. Coding data according to engagement rate and several other categories, the findings of this study reveal that citizen journalism is on the up and has gained the trust of other users in the Turkish Twittersphere compared to prominent traditional media outlets. Thus, in addition to highlighting why citizen journalism has emerged and gained prominence to such a degree, this thesis also demonstrates the declining credibility of mainstream media and its reflections.

L'elaborato inizia esponendo i principi della filosofia del linguaggio di Grice, in particolare le massime pragmatiche e, di conseguenza, le implicature. Si presentano quindi alcune teorie pragmatiche alternative, quali la Relevance Theory e il calcolo delle implicature scalari tramite l'operatore di esaustificazione.

This paper analyses news reports of “Bring Back Our Girls” campaign in Nigerian newspapers. The “Bring Back Our Girls” advocacy group was formed to pressure the Nigerian government to intensify efforts to rescue the over two hundred school girls abducted by Boko Haram insurgents at Chibok, Borno State, north east Nigeria. The abduction which took place in April 2014 and the subsequent campaign to release the girls received global media attention including many newspapers in the country. The study therefore analyses the schematic directions, discursive strategies and context of the discourse reports of “Bring Back Our Girls” campaigns in Nigerian newspapers using critical discourse analysis. A growing hope is that Twitter and similar technologies will enhance teachers’ professional growth by allowing them to collaborate and support each other online. In this conceptual paper, we evaluate the potential of such claims, theorizing about the relationships among technologies, practice, and communities of practice. Specifically, we demonstrate how the concepts of materiality and sociomateriality can be applied toward understanding and researching teachers’ professional communities on Twitter. Materiality refers to the physical or digital components of a technology. Sociomateriality refers the social practices and contexts shaping one’s sense of a technology.

Gender-inclusive language serves to recognize women and people with non-binary gender identities as part of the primary group, and it has been seen in various languages, including Arabic (Berger 2019), English (Berger 2019; Mathews 1995), Hebrew (Berger 2019), Portuguese (Secretaria
de Comunicação 2021), Spanish (Berger 2019; Guzmán Stein 2004), and Swedish (Berger 2019; Gustafsson Sendén et al. 2015), among others (Berger 2019). In Spanish, for example, speakers exchange
the generic masculine –o gender morpheme for morphemes like –@, –x, or –e. Through an analysis of the use of these morphemes in the word nosotros by Twitter users in or around Madrid, it is argued
that a language change based on analogy to non-gender-marked forms such as estudiante and inteligente is in progress (Campbell 2013; Gubb 2013; Moreno, p.c.; Pesce and Etchezahar 2019). Data
are manually extracted from tweets posted during the first through the tenth of each month in the years 2010, 2014, and 2018. The data reveal that no inclusive morphemes were used in 2010, but that by 2018, the most frequent gender-inclusive morpheme was –@, –x was the second-most frequent, and –e was the least frequent. The frequency of these morphemes corresponds with their novelty: –@ was created first, and –e is the most recent. Future studies should examine uses of gender-inclusive language in later years, as well as the demographic characteristics of the Twitter users.

The rejection of immigrants is socially constructed and fuelled by the viral spread of false information, giving rise to hate speech loaded with symbolism. Hence, this study undertakes a semiotic analysis of hate speech in hoaxes about immigrants published on social media in Spain, Greece and Italy from January 2022 to August 2023. These hoaxes were identified on the leading fact-checking platforms in each selected country: Newtral, Ellinika Hoaxes and Facta News/Open. A valid sample of 52 hoaxes was analysed using an interpretative perspective methodology, delving into the fundamental aspects of semiotics (denotative and connotative signs). The study highlights signs that give meaning to cultural codes, social representations, myths, or imaginaries. In addition, it concludes that these hoaxes repeat the same patterns across the three countries despite dealing with different information. The immigrant figure is associated with attributes such as vandal, anti-social, usurper or criminal, leading to the construction of meaning systems (myths) and social imaginaries that stigmatise this group and portray them as inconvenient in the host society.
