Spanish and Latin American Contemporary Literature

In 2007 bracht de Madrileense schrijfster Almudena Grandes het boek Het ijzig hart uit, waarin zij Spanjes worsteling met zijn oorlogsverleden aansnijdt. David Huys, senior docent European Studies en onderzoeker op het gebied van de burgeroorlog die Spanje vanaf 1936 in zijn greep hield, analyseert de roman van Grandes in dit artikel op narratologische wijze. Hij betoogt dat de betekenis van de burgeroorlog en dictatuur voor Spanjes democratie opnieuw geïnterpreteerd werd met de intrede van de generatie van de kleinkinderen in het maatschappelijk debat rond de millenniumwisseling. In deze bijdrage geeft Huys ons aan de hand van het boek van Grandes inzicht in de intergenerationele spanningen die deze herinterpretatie van Spanjes oorlogsverleden met zich meebrengen.

Tokom svoje književne karijere, peruanski nobelovac Mario Vargas Ljosa gotovo neprestano se, na različite načine, bavio motivom laži, koji ga je jednako zaokupljao u romanima (Grad i psi 1963, Zelena
kuća 1966, Razgovor u Katedrali 1969, Pantaleon i posetiteljke 1973, Povest o Majti 1984, Diskretni heroj 2013, Pet uglova 2016), esejima (Istinite laži 1980, Umetnost laganja 1984, Istina o lažima 1990), dramskim delima (Keti i nilski konj 1983, Lepe oči, ružne slike 1996) i autobiografskom štivu (Riba u vodi 1993). U ovom članku ćemo pokušati da sagledamo sa kojih sve aspekata Vargas Ljosa govori o temi laži, u kojim razdobljima svog književnog puta i da li je tok vremena doneo izvesne promene u njegovom pogledu na to pitanje. Takođe ćemo pokušati da nađemo uzroke njegovog upornog vraćanja toj temi, uvidom u njegova prozna i esejistička dela, akademske članke i novinske tekstove, i da izvedene zaključke suočimo sa prethodnim istraživanjima.

En este artículo examino la denominada escritura transversal, el proyecto intelectual y literario de Rafael Argullol y uno de los ejes vertebradores de su obra. Para el ensayista barcelonés, la transversalidad resulta una especie de epifanía expresiva en la que se conjugan el fragmento o el aforismo. Así, el autor pretende transparentar la emergencia y el flujo natural del pensamiento, en cuanto experiencia sensible e intelectiva, por medio de una serie de fugas y disonancias transgenéricas que refuerzan su concepción nómada y plural de la creación y de la existencia.

In this paper I examine the so-called transverse writing, the intellectual and literary project of Rafael Argullol and one of his work's core. To the catalan essayist, the transverse writing involves an expressive epiphany in which the fragment and the aphorism are conjugated. Thus, the author tries to make transparent the emergence and the natural flow of thought, as sensitive and intellective experience, through a series of transgeneric fugues and dissonances that reinforce his nomadic and plural conception of creation and existence.

[ES] El poeta Leopoldo Panero fue el Secretario General de las Bienales Hispanoamericanas de Arte, magno y trascendente certamen, inscrito en la “política de la Hispanidad”, que convocó al arte contemporáneo hispano en los años cincuenta. Allí se aunaron horizontes de la diplomacia, la cultura hispana y el avance creativo, facetas confluentes en la formación e intereses del astorgano, quien condujo sus osadas, complejas y tempestuosas ediciones.

[EN]The poet Leopoldo Panero was the General Secretary of the Hispano-American Biennial Art Exhibitions. These were important and far-reaching competitions in the frame of the “politics of the Hispanic world”, which summoned the contemporary art in the fifties. In this context, diplomacy, Hispanic culture and artistic proposals met. These were all a part of the education and interests of Panero, who lead the daring, complex and stormy editions.

Bojana KOVAČEVIĆ PETROVIĆ* ▪ RESUMEN: Este artículo investiga la presencia de los mitos en las dos primeras novelas del escritor y matemático argentino Guillermo Martínez. Acerca de Roderer es una historia sobre el proceso de madurez e inadaptación a la vida, impregnada de signos y preguntas universales, con los elementos del mito fáustico en el estadio del conocimiento humano contemporáneo, presentes en varios niveles del texto: explorando los límites del conocimiento humano, Martínez hace al narrador rechazar el pacto con el Diablo, pero le quita la vida. Su segunda novela, La mujer del maestro, trata el mito de Prometeo dentro de la historia, refiriéndose a los temas tan dispares como talento y traición, generosidad y envidia, deseo y vanidad, siempre poniendo el enfoque en la literatura. Por consiguiente, nuestra investigación está basada no solo en las mencionadas novelas sino también en las reflexiones del propio autor sobre literatura-desde su primer libro de ensayos La fórmula de la inmortalidad hasta el último publicado, La razón literaria-, y asimismo en las opiniones del escritor expresadas en las entrevistas que le hicimos en tres ocasiones. Nuestro objetivo es mostrar que Guillermo Martínez escribe sobre los temas universales con una nueva tensión, comprobando que Fausto y Prometeo son dos caras de un mismo mito, que sigue actual.

Introduction to the main topics of Manuel Zapata Olivella's great novel, focusing in the way that the story perform the visibilization of the Afroamericans into the Spanish American Literature, and the aim of giving to the Black people myths that can be used as foundations for the develop of a historic study inside the cultural productions in the Spanish spoken culture. Using Arendt's work, focuses also in the birth of the Politic debate over a narrative in Spanish of the Black culture. La experiencia de procesar un evento traumático es importante y único según una base individual. Este proceso reconstruye la identidad y la cosmovisión. También la gente de una cultura necesita procesar eventos y ajustar la identidad cultural. En su obra, Soldados de Salamina, Javier Cercas refleja algunos de los procesos que ocurrieron en la sociedad española usando la historia de una forma ficcional de sí mismo. En este trabajo, examino paralelos y representaciones de la contienda del país y la sociedad de España con la trauma de la Guerra Civil, el régimen de Franco y el pacto de olvido en el libro ficcional Soldados de Salamina por Javier Cercas. Específicamente, analizo las traumas simbólicas del protagonista y sus diálogos con Roberto Bolaño y el veterano Mirallas como partes de este proceso.

La música es algo que nos hace bailar, sentir y pensar. Cuando se esté triste, ponemos la música triste. Cuando se esté feliz, ponemos la música feliz y cuando se esté enojado, automáticamente ponemos canciones de Heavy Metal Rock. De este modo los cantantes tienen un poder que nos pueda influir, en términos de nuestros pensamientos, comportamiento y acciones. El genero de Reguetón tiene mucha critica por ser muy machista y al mostrar mujeres como objeto sexuales.
En este trabajo analizaré el machismo en la sociedad de Puerto Rico, la letras de una canción de J Álvarez un cantante de Reguetón y la influencia que las canciones tienen en la sociedad hoy en día, especialmente a los jóvenes.

Samanta Schweblin has established herself as one of the most widely read contemporary authors. Her short stories have been approached from various theoretical perspectives that include the fantastic or the uncanny. However, some of her short stories can be analyzed through the neo-fantastic poetic because they differ from other genres in their vision, intention and modus operandi. Her short stories use an epistemological metaphor to explore the objective of neo-fantastic fiction: the contemporary human being and his world. In fact, with her short stories Schweblin manages to glimpse at situations that concern what Giorgio Agamben defines as “the contemporary”. Thus, this article will examine the story “El hombre sirena” (The Merman) to demonstrate that the author uses the neo-fantastic to explore and delve into contemporary society as well as into concepts such as androcentrism, phallogocentrism and the desire for freedom of woman.

Con Ceiba II (poesía inédita) sale a la luz una gran parte de la obra poética de la autora que hasta ahora desconocíamos y compuesta a lo largo de tres décadas, entre los años sesenta y su muerte. Esta poética, situada entre dos épocas y dos geografías (la de la España franquista y la postfranquista, la de la Guinea colonial y la de la postindependencia), documenta de forma contundente la manera en que el colonialismo y las dictaduras se cruzan con narrativas de poder y de resistencia.

Este estudio de La Llamarada tanto como una novela de la tierra como de afirmación nacional, muestra un sistema discriminatorio de  explotación económica, social y racialmente estratificado en el contexto obrero del cañaveral y las centrales azucareras durante la década de los años 30. Dicho sistema se revela en el conflicto interior de Juan Antonio y su choque con los demás personajes masculinos y el ambiente hostil. Juan Antonio huye del cañaveral y se casa con Pepiña para restablecer lazos de seguridad económica con la vieja élite de hacendados en un mundo idílico de añoranzas de un pasado mejor, racialmente blanco e hispanizante. Con su vuelta a la tierra se reproduce o repite contradictori
amente la estructura interna jerarquizada, social y racialmente discriminatoria de poder de la nación. La Llamarada denuncia un sistema de desigualdad racial y explotación económica latifundista y absentista del pasado. Sin embargo, permite criticar las alianzas entre el poder económico político transnacional y estructuras nacionales jerarquizadas social y racialmente discriminatorias que se repiten. Se perpetúan así, formas indirectas o más sutiles de explotación económica discriminatorias del trabajador puertorriqueño, en una economía de dependencia o turística migratoria, dentro del contexto moderno o posmoderno de una economía globalizada.

In his last novel, El arpa y la sombra (1979), Alejo Carpentier provides the reader with his literary testament through an apocryphal reconstruction of Christopher Columbus´ life and myth. Stemming from this historiographic excuse, the text maintains a parodic dialogue with both its author previous works and the literary/historiographic tradition it belongs to. On proposing the Cuban novelist a notion of history that not only questions hegemonic views, but also those previously expressed by himself, the Borgesian concept of the text as a palimpsest is taken to the extreme here. This article examines the metafictional component of the novel to international postmodernism based on Carpentier´s use of self-consciousness, historiographic revisionism, and the parody of the grand narratives and myths of origin.

The work of Julio Cortázar is part of the Hispanic literary canon for his contribution to forming current writers, such as Samanta Schweblin. Jaime Alazraki to affirms that Cortázar’s short stories differ from the traditional fantastic mold and, in order to explain them, the critic develops the poetic of the neo-fantastic. In those short stories the author uses metaphors of “something” that he wants to suggest through the ambiguity or configuration of a story that combines two dissimilar orders and that charge the text with the neo-fantastic to express an incommunicable situation. Thus, using the definition of the fantastic and neo-fantastic with the theoretical texts by Todorov, Barrenechea and Alazraki, this project examines the use of the neo-fantastic elements in some short stories by Cortázar and Schweblin, demonstrating that the neo-fantastic remains an effective literary tool for contemporary writers.

Literatura y globalización: la narrativa hispanoamericana en el siglo XXI (espacio, tiempo, géneros) repasa algunas de las cuestiones que han estado y están en el punto de mira del latinoamericanismo y que presentan alguna novedad o
diferencia en la forma de percibir y analizar los textos literarios de la región con respecto a un pasado, el del siglo XX, todavía reciente. Partiendo de aspectos vinculados al espacio y al tiempo, el ensayo aborda, en un primer momento, la
configuración de nuevas cartografías, la condición posnacional y transterritorial de algunas obras recientes, así como la creación desde el ámbito hispanoamericano de toda una serie de imaginarios y representaciones de la globalización. Y termina
analizando los cambios acontecidos en el campo literario del mundo hispánico en las últimas décadas, en particular en lo que se refiere a los géneros literarios.

Menos estudiada que el tiempo, en nuestros días la categoría espacio se ha convertido en objeto de investigación privilegiado en el seno de multitud de ramas de conocimiento: físicos, matemáticos, geógrafos, sociólogos, antropólogos, historiadores y filósofos analizan hoy la esencia y la presencia del espacio; sin olvidar, por supuesto, el caso de la crítica literaria. No en vano, entendida la literatura como hecho cultural de capacidad omnívora, en ella tienen cabida y pueden reverberar todas y cada una de las proyecciones semánticas que en el espacio se pueden descubrir, con independencia de la perspectiva observacional tomada. De esta reflexión surge Dimensiones. El espacio y sus significados en la literatura hispánica.

A partir de supuestos teóricos diversos, los estudios aquí reunidos analizan los múltiples valores que tal noción adopta en la literatura hispánica, desde sus primeras manifestaciones hasta la actualidad, evidenciando una serie de connotaciones que, a su vez, han servido para dar cuerpo a estas páginas. Por ello «coordenadas», «dominios», «umbrales», «contornos», «órbitas» y «horizontes» estructuran y delimitan los capítulos de este volumen.

En justo homenaje a la naturaleza itinerante de este encuentro, el XIII Congreso Internacional ALEPH estuvo consagrado al tratamiento y estudio de la Geopoética: el espacio como significante y significado en la Literatura Hispánica, atrayendo a más de centenar y medio de participantes que, en 2016, se dieron cita en Salamanca. Otras ciudades como Valencia, Santiago de Compostela, Granada, Barcelona, Madrid, Lisboa, Mánchester, Gerona, Cádiz, Turín, Logroño o Sevilla albergaron con anterioridad eventos similares, organizados por miembros de la Asociación de Jóvenes Investigadores de la Literatura Hispánica ALEPH. Activa desde 2002, esta agrupación de investigadores predoctorales es ya un referente internacional en su ámbito de estudio, tal y como atestiguan las diferentes publicaciones derivadas de la intensa labor de investigación de sus integrantes.

Pareja indisoluble del volumen Topografías literarias. El espacio en la literatura hispánica de la Edad Media al siglo XXI, a cargo de Alba Agraz Ortiz y Sara Sánchez-Hernández (Universidad de Salamanca), esta monografía editada por Raquel Crespo-Vila y Sheila Pastor (Universidad de Salamanca) invita a explorar el espacio en todas y cada una de sus Dimensiones.

El cuerpo y la letra. La poética de Luis Alberto Ambroggio, edición crítica de la obra del destacado poeta argentino, residente desde hace cuatro décadas en Estados Unidos, es una excelente bitácora para bojear el recorrido de ese río lírico suyo durante los últimos 21 años, desde el venero hasta el mar. Una exquisi-ta aventura de (re)descubrimiento que incluye, en conteo regresivo, una selección de poemas de sus 11 libros, desde el más reciente La desnudez del asombro (2008), hasta su opera prima Poemas de Amor y Vida (1987), acompañados de artículos selectos de Enrique Gracia Trinidad —divertido y erudito perfil biográfico del autor, por el laureado poeta madrileño—, Octavio Costa, María del Águila Boge Pineda, Ana Recio Mir, Juan Sebastián, Adriana Corda, Orlando Rossardi, Moraima Semprúm de Donahue, Raúl Miranda Rico y Miguel Fajardo; así como tres breves ensayos (o autopsias) de Ambroggio sobre su poética.

n this book, I analyze several examples of what I call a “dispersed crime story” in contemporary Latin American fiction. The story develops through motifs such as crime mystery and investigation, but the plot does not evolve consistently; the investigation is relegated to a secondary position in the plot and in the end, it does not get resolved. In contemporary Latin American literature, the mystery genre inspires writers such as Ricardo Piglia, Roberto Bolaño or Horacio Castellanos Moya. None of them is a typical detective fiction writer. Nevertheless , each of them borrows narrative material from the crime novel genre to create suspense or insinuate danger. Only few protagonists of these “pseudo-criminal” stories manage to explain and rationalize the mystery of crime and evil. Paraphrasing the Argentinian writer Ricardo Piglia, “The whole world is perceived through the filter of crime.” The way in which writers (such as Piglia, Bolaño or Castellanos Moya) exploit the mystery genre is similar to that adopted by many Western authors from the beginning of the twentieth century. Their work has certain contradictory aspects; on the one hand it shows an ambition to experiment, on the other, it responds to the need for an evolving plot. In Faulkner’s fiction, for example, the tension grows according to the rules of a crime story (according to Brian McHale). From the Second Word War onwards, contemporary fiction addresses “pseudo-criminal” themes about the fundamental questions of life: What is really happening? Who is responsible for the evil? Is our life a coherent story or a collection of haphazard events? From the second half of the twentieth century onwards, several authors employ the well-known models of criminal fiction, but it seems to be done only in order to emphasize the potentially deceptive nature of the rational deductive process. In a new criminal modality of the “metaphysical detective story” (Michael Holquist’s term), the reader, instead of following the protagonist methodically towards the revelation of the mystery of the crime, is invited to reflect on philosophical concepts, such as: the search for truth, deceptive clues, the precariousness of the human condition, and the mystery of human identity. The last indicates, indirectly, that the criminal cannot be identified. The individual investigative case turns out to be a philosophical adventure (as in the works of Jorge Luis Borges, Nabokov’s Lolita (1955), Alain Robbe-Grillet’s Jealousy (1957), Thomas Pynchon’s The Crying of Lot 49 (1966) as well as in Umberto Eco’s, Paul Auster and Antonio Tabucchi’s novels). The mystery genre conventions allow for the criticism of deductive reasoning, society and politics. In Latin American fiction, from the end of the nineteenth century to date, the mystery genre was manifesting a tendency towards to heterodoxy. The values sustaining the genre’s conventions (such as individual reason and law-abiding governing institutions) have never been strongly grounded in the local, Latin American, collective tradition. Hence, the disposition towards the use of parody, which can be observed in the work of precursors like E.L. Holmberg, Paul Groussac or Jorge Luis Borges. Because of the aforementioned, contemporary works refer to the tradition of metaphysical detective fiction, the one that discredits the possibility of explaining and eliminating evil. However, they also refer to the committed criminal fiction, which emphasizes the powerlessness of the individual towards political circumstances. Some authors keep reworking the tradition of the detective as a “lonely hunter.” Some accompany the criminal, some pin the blame on ordinary people, some create action novel schemes, and others favor intellectual considerations (Ricardo Piglia’s Respiración artificial for instance). In the introduction, I put the term of “pseudo-criminal effect” in the context of present theories of the criminal genre. I aim is not only to use the literary analysis methods, but also to explain the noir convention along with contemporary concepts of late capitalist social mentalities (e.g. Bauman, Giddens, and Beck). In Latin American pseudo-criminal fiction, the cases of aporetic mysteries maintain a stronger connection with the background of regional crisis, both political and social (e.g. Roberto Bolaño´s 2666, Edmundo Paz Soldán´s La materia del deseo, Alonso Cueto´s novels). In the first part, The Pseudo Criminal Effect, I point to the genealogy of the contemporary proliferation of motifs – like crime, investigation, mystery or evil – from classical detective story to present variations. In the second part, The Epistemic Metaphor, I demonstrate how the investigation of crime expands and turns into a cognitive dilemma, what is the relation between contemporary pseudo detectives and the status of knowledge and the truth in postmodern societies. The third chapter, Literature as a criminal profession, presents imaginative concepts of links between the criminal plot and the work of an author, both in fiction and critical essays from Borges and Todorov to Piglia. The fourth chapter, The Psychological Dimension, analyses particular examples to demonstrate that criminal motifs, dispersed as they are today, no longer serve as secular rituals of purification of society from its crimes, as the classical detective fiction used to do. Nowadays, the pseudo-criminal effect emphasizes the instability of social roles (e.g. the identification with the criminal, as in Juan José Saer La pesquisa or in Roberto Bolaño’s novels). In the fifth part, Ubiquity of evil, I analyze the vision of moral and legal chaos present in several contemporary Spanish American works (e.g. Guillermo Fadanelli, Alonso Cueto, Fernando Vallejo, Alberto Barrera Tyszka, and Diego Paszkowski). The final chapter, Reconstruction of History: The Political Dimension of the Investigation, focuses on how the pseudo-detective stories symbolically resolve issues connected with the waves of political and war terror in the recent past of Latin America.

An exhaustive study of Roberto Bolaño's reception in translation in Anglophone countries, particularly in newspapers and literary supplements, vis-à-vis the questioning of contemporary views of "new world literature" and their recolonization of Spanish American contemporary fiction.

Análisis exhaustivo de la recepción de la literatura de Roberto Bolaño en países anglófonos (particularmente en revistas y suplementos literarios), en el contexto de una crítica de perspectivas contemporáneas de la "nueva literatura mundial" y su recolonización de la ficción latinoamericana contemporánea.

María Nsue Angüe’s Ekomo (1985) has been termed the first novel published by a woman in Equatorial Guinea, the only Spanish-speaking nation-state in SubSaharan Africa; indeed, by some criteria of genre, it may be considered the first by any Guinean author after the country’s independence.1 Recounted through the voice of a female character who comes to denounce many of her traditional society’s taboos and norms, and set at the height of the European colonization of Africa, at an indeterminate moment of the 1950s or 1960s, the novel condemns alike the insufficiency of both Western medical and religious systems and values, on the one hand, and their ancestral counterparts on the other, destabilized by colonial intervention.2 As critics have remarked, Nsue Angüe-a writer and storyteller of traditional oral narratives3-fears and deplores above all the progressive and irremediable occidentalization of Africa, endowing her novel with a transcendent dimension in which the fate of its principal characters epitomizes the tragedy of African peoples, civilizations, and cultures.

Este artículo propone un modelo teórico para cartografíar las escrituras del yo a partir de una revisión crítica del concepto de autoficción. La propuesta parte de una lectura de la obra narrativa de Mario Levrero –y en particular de dos textos: “Diario de un canalla” (1993) y La novela luminosa (2005)– e incluye análisis de
sendas novelas de César Aira y Antonio Orejudo –Cómo me hice monja (1993) y Los cinco y yo (2017)–, así como un examen de la discusión crítica desarrollada en las
últimas décadas en torno a los conceptos de autoficción y escrituras del yo.

Il caso della traduzione italiana del romanzo 'Boquitas Pintadas' di Manuel Puig è esemplare. L'opera, uscita a Buenos Aires presso l'Editorial  Sudamericana, nel 1969, esce in italiano nel '71, tradotta da Enrico Cicogna per Feltrinelli, con il titolo 'Una frase un rigo appena'. Il titolo non è che la punta dell'iceberg. Nel testo le citazioni dei tangos di Gardel, fondamentali nella narrazione, sono sostitute con citazioni di canzonette italiane. Dove l'autore cita Sarmiento, uno dei padri della Patria Argentina, il traduttore traduce: Garibaldi. Si mostra qui come le traduzioni dei romanzi ispanoamericani erano condotte all'insegna del pregiudizio e di vizi ideologici. Un'America Latina di fantasia è sostituita all'Argentina narrata dall'autore. Non solo manca il rispetto filologico del testo, ma si nega al lettore la percezione del clima storico e culturale dal quale l'opera emerge. Al di là del caso esemplare di cattiva traduzione, resta aperta la riflessione sulla difficile arte della traduzione letteraria.
