"The Unknown Painter" is an antislavery short story that first appeared in the mid-1830s.  Its author, original place of publication, and date remain undetermined.  It concerns the Spanish artist Bartoleme Esteban Murillo and his black slave, the painter Sebastian Gomez.  This paper analyzes the nineteenth-century publication history of the story, its translation, and the ideologies of its revisions and republications.  The analysis pays particular attention to racial content, its revision in Frederick Douglass' Paper, the zombie sub-theme, and translations.

The themes of ‘freedom’ and ‘resistance’ have histories and philosophical arguments that can be mapped across human history. This thesis uses these thematic concerns to explore the work of Irish artist Samuel Beckett. In so doing, this piece challenges the reader to re-evaluate Beckett’s work away from being a modernist artwork detached from time and context.  Instead, what we need to see in Beckett is his relentless desire to reveal a brutally damaged 20th century that saw individuals exposed to extreme political ideas that led in many cases to physical and mental abuse.  To aid this highly contextualised view of his work, this thesis employs the works of Berlin, Hegel, Marx and Adorno to give a deeper understanding of the philosophical context or to provide prisms through which a modern-day reader might understand Beckett’s narrative form.
This piece illustrates how, by encapsulating philosophical concepts of freedom and resistance, Beckett’s literature not only offers a glimpse into how he saw the world, but also why Jean Paul Sartre argued that he needed to focus on how “a fictional technique always relates back to the novelist’s metaphysics.”

The great Nigerian novelist Chinua Achebe once wrote: “Art is man’s constant effort to create for himself a different order of reality from that which is given to him.” One can see then why the Nigerian-Irish writer Melatu Uche Okorie, who spent over eight years in the direct provision system, turned to literature. Her slim but weighty short story collection This Hostel Life tells of that experience. First published in 2018 by Skein Press, Ireland’s new platform for minority writers, the book is now being republished by the prestigious Virago Press.

Swimming in the waters a half hour drive from Hermione's house, Hermione found some special seashells. She thought they were remarkably different from regular ones, in that these sparkled and transmitted coloured reflections from the sunshine. She didn't know what they were so she went to her magical and rare nature objects book she had found in the library one night looking for an antidote to mild insomnia. After reading from it she found out these shells, when woven with silk thread gave the owners the ability to turn into a mermaid. " Enchanting, " she thought, " this could give me something to do all summer long away from Hogwarts. She found some silk from one of her dresses and unwound it, poking small holes into the seashells and threading them onto the string. By midday on the beach she dove into the water. As soon as she entered the water, her legs felt gooey and they shut together like magnets and her waist began to tingle, slowly turning into a long scaly green skin with a tail and fins. While with her legs, she had only been able to swim the shore without the waves tackling her. Now she was able to ride the waves and swim deep underground.

Briefly reflecting on the nature of plotting in literary fiction and the omnipresence of the third-person storyteller, this talk was given at the launch of Anjum Hasan's collection of short stories, 'Difficult Pleasures', in Bangalore in 2012.

Prezentowana praca stanowi próbę opisu poetyki opowiadań Gustawa Herlinga-Grudzińskiego. Istniejące w tym przedmiocie opracowania – w postaci artykułów, recenzji oraz fragmentów książek – mają charakter cząstkowy. W rozprawie tej poddaję analizie całość dotychczasowego dorobku pisarza: utwory powstałe na przestrzeni ponad czterech dziesięcioleci, od opublikowanego w 1956 roku "Księcia Niezłomnego" po wydrukowany w roku 1999 "Odlot i powrót Gołubowa". Traktowanie licznych przecież opowiadań en gros znajduje usprawiedliwienie w często wyrażanej przez krytyków opinii stwierdzającej, iż utwory Herlinga są „jakby zbiorem rozmaitych redakcji tego samego opowiadania” (R.K. Przybylski), że pisarz „często powraca do wcześniej rozpoczętych tematów” (W. Bolecki), że „w swoich opowiadaniach pisze kolejne rozdziały wielkiego dzieła” (Z. Kudelski). Wszelako podkreśla się również, iż wraz z kolejnymi dokonaniami wzrasta stopień uniwersalności rozpoznań dotyczących ludzkiej kondycji, że poszczególne wątki tematyczne ujmowane są w nowej perspektywie i że dopiero odczytywane razem – opowiadania dopełniają się wzajemnie.
Książka niniejsza składa się z trzech części. W pierwszej z nich – na marginesie rozważań na temat publikacji utworów Herlinga, ich recepcji, a także podjętej przeze mnie krytycznej prezentacji ważniejszych ustaleń dotyczących opowiadań pisarza – zakreślam bliżej przedmiot pracy (poddawany analizie obszar twórczości Herlinga), dokonuję w jego zakresie wstępnych rozpoznań oraz formułuję niektóre założenia badawcze.
Dalsze, zasadnicze kwestie metodologiczne podejmuję w rozdziale pierwszym części drugiej, w którym staram się sprecyzować zawarty w temacie termin „opowiadanie” oraz sprawdzić, na ile okazuje się on adekwatny w stosunku do wyodrębnionego przeze mnie wstępnie korpusu tekstów pisarza. W rozdziale tym – poprzez wskazanie najistotniejszych gatunków współkonstytuujących uprawianą przez Herlinga formę, mianowicie reportażu, eseju i przypowieści – wyodrębniam, wyprowadzone z nich, kategorie porządkująco-interpretacyjne: autentyzm, dyskursywność i paraboliczność, służące wskazaniu najważniejszych cech konstrukcyjnych utworów. Zawartość semantyczna owych kategorii definiowana jest w wyznaczanych przez nie trzech kolejnych rozdziałach, stanowiących meritum sformułowanego w tytule pracy zagadnienia. Analiza konstrukcji opowiadań ujawnia jednocześnie zakres podejmowanej w nich przez pisarza problematyki, a także wpisany w nie filozoficzno-pisarski projekt.
W części trzeciej – na którą składają się interpretacje "Drugiego Przyjścia", "Gasnącego Antychrysta", "Gorącego oddechu pustyni" i "Błogosławionej, świętej" – proponuję bliższe przyjrzenie się ważniejszym z wątków problemowych podejmowanych w opowiadaniach. Oczywiście każdy wybór spośród kilkudziesięciu utworów wydawać się może arbitralny, niemniej starałem się kierować wymogiem reprezentatywności tekstów. Nie znajdziemy tu wprawdzie odczytania tak ważnej dla zrozumienia pisarstwa Herlinga dylogii "Skrzydła ołtarza", jednakże poświęcam jej sporo uwagi w części drugiej pracy. Tam też – podkreślę – zarysowana została problematyka wielu innych, istotnych w dorobku pisarza utworów. Ostatecznie więc w części trzeciej poddaję interpretacji teksty powstałe między rokiem 1961 a 1994, dwa z okresu emigracyjnego i dwa opublikowane po zniesieniu (nie tylko literackiego) podziału na kraj i emigrację. Przede wszystkim jednak w tekstach tych znajdujemy wątki faktycznie najistotniejsze, najczęściej podejmowane, kształtujące swoistą filozofię tego pisarstwa. Analizowane utwory eksponują też różnorodność aktualizowanej w opowiadaniach Herlinga problematyki. Ponadto poszczególne interpretacje stanowić mają – w moim zamyśle – ilustrację i ukonkretnienie ustaleń dotyczących konstrukcji opowiadań formułowanych w części drugiej, w szczególności zaś mają egzemplifikować przejawianie się w utworach pisarza, w różnej konfiguracji, kategorii autentyzmu, dyskursywności i paraboliczności.
Tak zatem praca niniejsza, skupiona zasadniczo na zagadnieniu konstrukcji opowiadań, podejmuje również kwestię „przystawalności” zastosowanej techniki pisarskiej do realizowanej w utworach szeroko pojętej problematyki światopoglądowej.

The Italian edition of the work by Eleazar M. Meletinsky on the historical poetics of the novella – recently edited and translated by M. Bonafin and L. Sestri ‒ gives us the opportunity to revise the theoretical model by which the Russian scholar explained the origins of this narrative genre in Europe and Asia from various folkloric forms, i.e. myth, fairy and realistic tale, anecdote: in particular the analysis is carried out through the comparison with the similar reflections on novel and epic available in other Meletinsky’s books and with the theory of the “converging streams” developed by A.N. Veselovsky. Some corrections to the model of historical poetics are proposed, in order to conciliate typology and contingent elements, poetics and philology.

Images of the American South in literature and media are often cultural stereotypes, projected as representations of objective reality. Stereotypical perception of the South has often been organized around two classes of image. One is antebellum-magnolia-GWTW mythology. The other is cotton row-tobacco road-Baby Doll grotesquerie. They embody the two greatest bourgeois perceptions of threat, of a decaying aristocracy and of a rebellious, primitive peasantry. The two classes of representation share three characteristics: they are both white, static, and unproductive.

E. M. Forster’s hotel literature has acquired increasing momentum
within contemporary critical discourses on hotels in modernist mobilities, spatio-temporality, and geographies (Thacker 2003, Short 2019). In Forster’s critically neglected and underrepresented short story “Arthur Snatchfold” (1928; published posthumously in 1972), the hotel and its surroundings come to resemble a space of queer possibility that functions as a homoerotically-charged Foucauldian counter-site. With the story progressively acquiring the semblance of a “hotel case” (1987, 108) through the assumption of an inferred, imagined, but never really lived, queer life within the hotel premises, all normative ways of codifying sexual identity in “Arthur Snatchfold” are challenged. To exist meaningfully and move ahead with the exploration of their sexualities, the story’s sexual offenders have to resort to the green belt surrounding what the conventional morality perceives as “that deplorable hotel” (1987, 106). It is the hotel as a peculiar configuration that opens a range of possibilities for transgressive behaviours. This is also suggested in the failed attempts at policing the hotel premises. The hotel erotica in “Arthur Snatchfold” seems, by the same token, to be born out of the tension arising from the modernist urge to spatialize through the heterotopic transport of the protagonists from monochromatic domesticity towards the multihued hotel. In the immediate vicinity of the hotel and, in an illusory sort of way, within the plasticity of the hotel, the protagonists finally find refuge.

Проведене дослідження засвідчує, що персонажна інтроспекція у текстах сучасної художньої короткої прози є самостійною категорією, відмінною від інших текстових явищ, що має свої особливості виділення та власне функціональне навантаження.
У дослідженні подана зручна система співвідношення категорії персонажної інтроспекції з іншими текстовими категоріями, а також подана проста класифікація функцій персонажної інтроспекції.

A well-known writer of modern Egyptian literature, Yūsuf Idrīs portrays both the reality of his time in social productions and an absurd world of self-reflection and existential pursuit. The latter characterizes his short story “The Journey” presented here, translated with the intention of reflecting the absurdities of the original in its theme, rhythm and narrative style. Thus, the translation of the short story retained unusual Arabic constructions, such as the use of inverted syntactic order (with the verb at the end of the sentence), the repetition of words and expressions, the recurrent use of reticence, and the preference for coordinated over subordinate clauses. Another complex aspect of the translation is the Egyptian colloquialisms, used by the narrator to address different characters in a derogatory and satirical manner, and which were translated, as much as possible, by colloquialisms of similar meanings and uses in Portuguese.

Wiliam Faulkners ‘Een roos voor Emily’ (‘A Rose for Emily’) werd voor het eerst gepubliceerd in 1930, in het aprilnummer van het tijdschrift Forum. Faulkner had in 1930 al vier romans op zijn naam staan, maar ‘Een roos voor Emily’ was het eerste korte verhaal dat hij publiceerde. Het is niet zo experimenteel als zijn romans The Sound and the Fury (Het geraas en gebral) en Absalom, Absalom! Desondanks bevat het toch enkele karakteristieke Faulkneriaanse elementen, zoals een ongebruikelijk vertel perspectief en een gefragmenteerde chronologie. Net als het merendeel van Faulkners oeuvre speelt ook dit verhaal zich af in het fictionele Zuiden waar Faulkner de naam Yoknapatawpha County aan gaf. "

Although there is a tight bond between the short story and the novel, the two forms are different from each other in many respects. There is a general notion that a short story is only a truncated novel. It is construed as practicing ground for the elevated novel writing and so it is often treated with flippancy. This has accounted for the profusion of mediocrities which are presented as short stories especially in some parts of Africa. Though there is no definition of the short story that is universally acceptable as yet, students and critics of fiction have agreed that the short story is largely informed by consistency and comprehensibility of characters, motivation and plausibility of action as well as acceptability of the overall meaning. Unity of expression, economy and singleness of purpose are the guiding principles of a well written short story. The actual length of what constitutes the short story is still a matter of controversy among scholars. The short story is different from the novel in that it is a stretch that could be read in one breath. The novel is made up of stories-incidents and actions. In a short story incidents and actions become condensed and intensified to produce the required concentrated effect that would be equally comparable to that produced by the novel. The short story could be said to be closer to poetry for its attempt to achieve a total effect within a limited time and space via compression and compactness, to achieve in a few pages what a novel
