We present results of a comparative experimental-numerical study of the buoyancy-driven slumping flow of two non-Newtonian fluids in a horizontal closed pipe. This type of flow occurs during the abandonment of horizontal oil and gas wells, when sealing the well through the setting of cement plugs. In our study, both of the fluids exhibit shear-thinning behaviour and one of the fluids has a yield stress. The yield stress is necessary in order for the flow to have a static equilibrium. We have studied the effects of changes in density difference and of small deviations from perfectly horizontal. The effects of these parameters on the interface shape and on the slump length versus time were analyzed. Comparison of numerical and experimental results shows broadly similar trends, but with some qualitative differences also observed, possibly due to interfacial effects at the interface. In this work, the performance of three natural surfactants (one produced by a bacteria and two of vegetal origin) in comparison to synthetics surfactants (cationic, anionic, non-ionic and zwitterionic) for its potential use in enhanced oil recovery EOR application was compared. The basis of comparison was basically the surfactant's solutions surface tension (ST) at room temperature, in the presence and absence of brine (salinity of about 4.7%). These measurements were developed to estimate if surfactants will resist reservoir conditions such as 75 °C and high salinities (up to 5%), conditions prevailing in the oil-field of Chicontepec, Veracruz (Mexico). Results of the work showed that biosurfactants could have potential for EOR process. The rhamnolipid produced by Pseudomonas and guar gum natural surfactants developed characteristics as good or even better than the synthetic surfactants normally employed in this process. The rhamnolipid produced by Pseudomonas seems to be a natural surfactant with extremely interesting characteristics. Rhamnolipid solutions yielded quite low ST at low concentrations (i.e. < 30 mN/m), even in the presence of brine for concentrations below 0.08%. Heat treatment applied to rhamnolipid solutions change very slightly the ST values when solutions contained no salts and about of 30% oil when brine was present. Rhamnolipid solutions did not show the higher foam capabilities, but represented half the capability of Polafix CAPB surfactant in producing foam. Neither guar nor locust bean gums showed important diminutions of ST at different concentrations in the solution. Nevertheless, for certain gum concentrations and in the presence of brine, guar gum had a very good performance (0.02%). ABSTRACT Flow experiments have been conducted for oil-water two-phase flow in a horizontal 5.08 cm ID flow loop at a length to diameter ratio of 1311. The fluids were light Malaysian waxy crude oil from the offshore Terengganu (ρo=818 kg/ , µo= 1.75 mPa.s and wax content=16.15 wt %) and synthetic formation water. The water-cut was varied between 10 to 90% at nine mixture flow rates of 2.0 to 16.2 cm3/s. Measuring the changes in pressure drop and liquid holdup at different flow rates of oil-water two-phase flow, a new flow pattern was identified. Strong dependence of the oil-water slippage on the minimum flow rate was observed. The highest pressure drop of 11.58 kPa was obtained at maximum flow rate of 16.21 cm3/s and oil fraction of 0.9; while the lowest pressure drop of 1.31 kPa was recorded at the lowest flow rate of 2.03 cm3/s and water fraction of 0.9. The experimental results could be used as a platform to understand better a more complex case of gas/oil/water concurrent flow in a pipeline.

The expected instructions from an exploration manager, to stop drilling and abandon a well where the bit hits the Precambrian basement, no longer applies. The fractured and altered Precambrian basement rocks are the most prolific reservoirs in the southern Gulf of Suez and the northern Red Sea rifts where hydrocarbons are produced from 8 fields, with porosity and permeability values up to 15% and 300 millidarcy, respectively. The surface and subsurface Precambrian basement rocks are related to the final stages of the tectonic–magmatic cycle of the Arabo-Nubian Shield and are composed of quartz–diorite, granodiorite, syenogranite, alkali granites and andesite porphyry, dissected by means of dykes, fractures and joints. Three main directions of fractures, northwest–southeast, northeast–southwest and east northeast–west southwest have been detected in the study area. The porosity and production rates of this reservoir, as well as the oil–water contact movement, depend mainly on the age, intensity and direction of the fractures, diagenetic processes and the dip and direction of the dykes and brecciated zones. The alteration processes reach their maximum intensity in the topmost section, known as the basement cover, where the solution and leaching has led to the enlargement of the fractures and vertical communications. The underlying fracture zone has been affected by differential alteration processes, creating zones of high and low vertical porosity and permeability. Thus, the reservoir potential of the Precambrian basement has been greatly underestimated.
