Innovation is a key element in reshaping the landscape of education in the countryside; but teachers assigned in the mountains know that the hurdles of mountain life demand something more than innovating if their pupils have to learn. Pupils have aspirations, but life in the mountains is hard. Thus, teachers must walk the extra mile to put pupils back to the classroom. This paper attempted to narrate the experiences of a group of graduate students at the Visayas State University (VSU) actively involved in the conduct of community outreach projects in the elementary schools in the remote/mountain barangays of Baybay City, Leyte, Philippines. During ocular visits, essential information were gathered through in-depth interviews with teachers, parents, pupils and barangay captains. Interviews focused on socioeconomic status of parents, school needs, nutritional condition and health habits of pupils, school population, etc. Profiling was important in deciding whether or not the school became the recipient of the outreach, since funding was completely dependent on the benevolence of private individuals, friends, graduate and college students who shared the advocacy of community service. For a while, the Rotary Club of Ormoc and the Phil. Carabao Center housed in VSU likewise extended their support. These humble undertakings started in 2015. Since then, the group had accomplished eight (8) outreach projects, demonstrating that charity, service and genuine concern for the needy are deeply rooted in the Filipino vein. Undeniably, poverty is anywhere in this country and children in remote or upland communities are very vulnerable victims. The lack of nutritious food, and, worse, the absence of it at times as well as other basic school needs has affected their health conditions and attendance in schools. Worst of all, poverty has depleted some children with the much needed parental love and nurturing that must have been accorded them on account of their tender age.

Buku ini disusun berdasarkan hasil kegiatan KKN-PpMM di Desa Kalongsawah selama 32 hari. Ada 11 orang mahasiswa yang terlibat di kelompok ini, yang berasal dari 7 Fakultas yang berbeda. Kami namai kelompok ini dengan SECURAH, dengan nomor kelompok 067. Kami dibimbing oleh Bapak Dedy Nursamsi, S.H. M.Hum., beliau adalah dosen di Fakultas Syariah dan Hukum. Tidak kurang dari 11 kegiatan yang kami lakukan di desa tersebut, yang sebagian besar merupakan pelayanan kepada masyarakat dan sebagian kecilnya adalah pemberdayaan. Dengan fokus pada satu kampung, yaitu Kampung Kalongdagul, kegiatan-kegiatan yang kami lakukan menghabiskan dana sekitar Rp16.700.000,-. Dana tersebut kami dapatkan dari iuran anggota kelompok KKN sebesar Rp1.000.000,- per orang, dana penyertaan Program Pengabdian pada Masyarakat oleh Dosen (PpMD) UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta Rp5.000.000,-, dan dari hasil pengumpulan dana sebesar Rp700.000,-.
Dari hasil kegiatan yang kami lakukan, terdapat sejumlah keberhasilan yang telah kami raih, yaitu:
1. Meningkatnya peran masyarakat dalam pembangunan desa.
2. Bertambahnya motivasi peserta didik SD, SMP, untuk melanjutkan kuliah.
3. Bertambahnya pengetahuan masyarakat mengenai UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta.
4. Bertambahnya pembangunan fisik atau rehabilitasi bangunan, antara lain: Pembangunan Fasilitas Mandi, Cuci dan Kakus (MCK) Umum, Pembangunan Tempat Pembuangan Sampah Sementara (TPS), dan Pengadaan Tiang Penerangan Jalan.
Saat merencanakan dan implementasi kegiatan, terdapat sejumlah kendala yang kami hadapi, antara lain:
1. Kurangnya waktu untuk melakukan konsolidasi dan koordinasi dengan berbagai pihak, baik internal anggota kelompok, dosen pembimbing, pihak sponsor, maupun aparatur desa.
2. Kurangnya dana yang bisa terkumpul untuk memaksimalkan rencana kegiatan yang telah disusun.
3. Sejumlah masyarakat kurang merespons kegiatan kami karena antara satu RT dan yang lainnya tidak kompak dan saling mendukung.

Namun demikian, kami pada akhirnya bisa merampungkan sebagian besar rencana kegiatan kami. Adapun kekurangan-kekurangannya tersebut di antaranya:
1. Ketiadaan tempat pembuangan sementara untuk sampah warga desa yang seharusnya diteruskan ke tempat pembuangan akhir.
2. Kurangnya kesadaran masyarakat desa akan pentingnya menjaga kebersihan lingkungan.
3. Kurangnya fasilitas mandi, cuci, dan kakus yang memadai bagi seluruh masyarakat desa.

This paper describes some of the main aspects of microfinance (MF) in underdeveloped countries, showing why it has succeeded in reaching the poor, while traditional banks have not, using innovative devices such as group lending with self-monitoring, short repayments instalments and small loans. The aim of the paper is to show how microfinance institutions (MFIs) can fill the lack of traditional banks in underdeveloped countries, proposing unconventional products and innovative business models. This study also investigates about possible synergies between banks and MFIs, avoiding overlaps and mission drift. It is shown that MFIs can improve their outreach using technological devices such as M-banking. Innovative questions and proposals are illustrated, so as to give an updated and synthetic picture of the state-of-the-art, which might prove useful for researchers and practitioners.

This article discusses the biographies of Menachem Mendel Schneerson (the Rebbe) within the broader context of Chabad historio-graphic lore, in particular the quasi-historical writings of Yosef Yizhak Schneersohn from the 1930s and 1940s. Described by Ada Rapoport-Albert as "hagiography with footnotes," these seemingly scholarly and modern texts constituted an alternative narrative to that of academic Jewish history. From this vantage point, I consider how biographies published by academics and by hasidic authors have mutually influenced each other, particularly in their scope, form, and method. To that end, I examine the controversy that surrounded the 2010 publication of the first academic biography of Schneerson, Samuel Heilman and Menachem Friedman's The Rebbe, and analyze the strategies undertaken by subsequent authors that have allowed them to present the Rebbe's life in a form that was no longer "hagiography with footnotes" (which would have alienated a secular readership) but as seemingly impartial biographies (without alienating the hasidic readership).

This dissertation tackles the complicated topic of how archaeology was, is, and should be treated and included in the education system in England. For a long time many in the field of archaeology have held grievances with the failings of formal education to include archaeology in the classroom, particularly in History teaching. Here I have considered the challenges faced, where progress has been made, and what more can be done to integrate archaeology into school teaching.

By studying case studies, speaking to students and teaching, and looking at alternative curriculums (amongst other sources), I have established that the National Curriculum in England has provided a broader education on archaeological topics at the expense of imparting a true understanding of the role of archaeology in how we study the past. The new National Curriculum as of 2014 provides more scope for discussing prehistory in History lessons, but does little to improve recognition of archaeology’s role.
Going forward, more training of teachers in archaeological topics is required, along with an increased archaeological resource infrastructure from archaeological professionals and museums. Following this, we may finally see archaeology given the recognition it deserves in classrooms in England.

Tekst predstavlja jedan od načina na koji se pojedina znanja, iskustva i ideje o outreachu mogu sistematizovati. U njemu se predlaže određeni teorijski okvir kao oslonac za razvoj prakse. On nudi smernice udruženjima koja tek počinju s radom i podstrek za refleksiju o praksi udruženjima koja uveliko realizuju outreach. Predložena definicija outreacha pokušava da obuhvati sve ono što sadržajno outreach rad može da ponudi i oslanja se na literaturu koja je navedena. Ona ističe potencijal ove metode rada, sagledan kroz prizmu kritičkog pristupa. Predložena klasifikacija ima za cilj da bude pregledna i korisna.

This essay describes the different ways contemporary American Ashkenazi Orthodox Jews explain kashrut and food blessings in communal schools and in religious outreach, and the role of Kabbalah in these lessons. I focus on Chabad Hasidic Jews, whose kabbalistic theology permits teaching Jewish foodways as a means of partnering with God; and I contrast their rationales with those of non-Hasidic Modern Orthodox, Centrist Orthodox, or Haredi Jews, who teach kashrut as an act of servitude to God. Chabad educators have adapted its kabbalistic resources for purposes of attracting followers comfortable with American cultural values.

This article examines the dominant perceptions of war crimes trials among victims from Prijedor, a municipality in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Largely based on interviews with victims who have testified in trials before international, state and district courts, and victims who have never testified, non-governmental organization activists working with victims in their communities, and some professionals involved in Prijedor-related cases, the article attempts to cast new light on the factors which create and shape these perceptions. Considering the nature of the violence experienced by the community in question and the relatively substantive judicial response to it, the Prijedor case offers insights relevant to similar communities around the world and important lessons for courts and tribunals seeking to ensure that their work is capable of providing some sense of justice to victims.

Like most denominations, mine believes that Jesus is our prophet, priest, and king. Believing in the priesthood of all believers basically means that all believers have direct access to God, and do not have to come to an individual to perform sacrifices on their behalf. Furthermore, that as followers of Christ we have the responsibility to act as priests. In short, all believers can perform priestly work.
However, perhaps the focus has been mostly directed on being priests and has forgotten that Christ’s followers are also called to be prophets. Prophets were, and are, called to be agents of change and transformation in their present time, just as Jesus was. I argue that as Jesus' followers, we all should be the agents of change and transformation our communities need.

This report, produced jointly by ICTJ's Research Unit and the Children and Youth Program, is based on a comparative review of current and past efforts to reach out to children and youth as part of outreach programming for TJ measures. Drawing from the experiences of places as varied as Canada, Cambodia, Colombia, Kenya, Liberia, Peru, Nepal, Sierra Leone, and Tunisia, this report provides strategies to develop youth and child tailored outreach programs for transitional justice measures.

The Handbook of Risk and Crisis Communication explores the scope and purpose of risk, and its counterpart, crisis, to facilitate the understanding of these issues from conceptual and strategic perspectives. Recognizing that risk is a central feature of our daily lives, found in relationships, organizations, governments, the environment, and a wide variety of interactions, contributors to this volume explore such questions as: "What is likely to happen, to whom, and with what consequences?"; "To what extent can science and vigilance prevent or mitigate negative outcomes?"; and "What obligation do some segments of local, national, and global populations have to help other segments manage risks?", shedding light on the issues in the quest for definitive answers.

Group liability is often portrayed as the key innovation that led to the explosion of the microcredit movement, which started with the Grameen Bank in the 1970s and continues on today with hundreds of institutions around the world. Group lending claims to improve repayment rates and lower transaction costs when lending to the poor by providing incentives for peers to screen, monitor, and enforce each other’s loans. However, some argue that group liability creates excessive pressure and discourages good clients from borrowing, jeopardizing both growth and sustainability. Therefore, it remains unclear whether group liability improves the lender’s overall profitability and the poor’s access to financial markets. We worked with a bank in the Philippines to conduct a field experiment to examine these issues. Cél: Általános célként fogalmazódott meg egy megkereső munkán és HIV/HCV tanácsadáson alapuló módszer kidolgozása és végrehajtása fővárosi, intravénás szerhasználók részére. Másik általános cél volt a tanácsadási program végrehajtásának rövid távú hatásának elemzése.
Módszerek: A program alapját a National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) által kidolgozott Közösségi Alapú Utcai Megkereső Modell Program (CBOM) (NIDA, 2000) képezte. A program végrehajtására szociális munkásokat képeztünk ki edukátoroknak. Az edukátorok három alkalommal tartottak tanácsadást a programban résztvevőknek. A program értékelésére szolgáló kérdőív (face-to-face, strukturált interjú) már korábban kidolgozásra került. Az alapadatok gyűjtésére az első tanácsadás alkalmával került sor, míg az utánkövetésre 30 nappal a program befejeztével került sor.
Személyek: A mintába random módon 87 intravénás használó került. A mintába olyanok kerülhettek, akik még soha nem voltak HIV, HCV szűrésen, vagy voltak, de nem vették kézhez az eredményüket. A programot végül 43 fő a kontroll, 44 fő a kísérleti csoportban kezdte meg. A program során a kísérleti csoportból 12, míg a kontroll csoportból 11 személy morzsolódott le, azaz nem vett részt mindhárom tanácsadáson. A program elején a két csoport statisztikailag szignifikáns módon nem különbözött a szociodemográfiai, szerhasználati, valamint HIV/HCV tudás tekintetében, ami alapvető kritériuma annak, hogy bármilyen beavatkozást végre lehessen hajtani, és annak hatását mérni lehessen.
Eredmények: Amint azt a fentiekben is láttuk, a random mintavételnek köszönhetően a főbb dimenziók mentén a kísérleti és a kontroll csoport tagjai nem különböztek egymástól. Jóllehet nem volt főbb cél a lemorzsolódás okainak vizsgálata, a kutatás során nem tudtuk beazonosítani a programból való kiesést valószínűsítő tényezőket. Mindkét csoportban szignifikáns módon nőtt a HIV-vel és HCV-vel kapcsolatos ismeret a program befejeztét követően, amit a program egyik rövid távú hatásaként interpretálhatunk. A vizsgálat lezárását követően ugyanakkor - eltekintve néhány indikátortól - nem tapasztaltunk jelentősebb különbségeket a két csoport között.
Diszkusszió: A kutatás mutatja, hogy Magyarországon is el lehet végezni más országokban bevált, megkereső munkával kombinált HIV/HCV prevenciós, strukturált tanácsadással összekapcsolt beavatkozást. Az intervenciós és a kontroll csoport közötti különbség hiánya ugyanakkor az edukátorok fokozottabb képzését és monitorozását igényli. Az intervenciónak a tudás és percepció változás mellett jobban kell koncentrálnia a viselkedésváltozásra (biztonságosabb injektálás, szűrésben való részvétel).

Since 2013 we built a working group formed by researchers, educators, social workers, communicators and educational psychologists to bring archaeological research to all types of audiences, especially those with limited access to scientific dissemination programmes. In particular, we refer to people with psychological disorders or physical disabilities, older adults, newcomers, social groups traditionally marginalized and people at risk of social exclusion. These groups are usually left out of scientific outreach projects. We regard this neglect as serious as we believe in an inclusive society and the neglect is exclusionary. This work covers archaeological outreach activities engaging with some groups that usually do not participate in, and enjoy, science, specifically with people with intellectual disabilities and mental illnesses, recently arrived immigrants, the elderly and Romani people. Although initially, our activities began in the neighbourhoods of the city centre of Barcelona, today they have spread to other cities in Spain.

Introduction to the Staffordshire Place-Name Project, a volunteer project run by the English Place-Name Society and Institute for Name-Studies (University of Nottingham) with the Staffordshire Archives and Heritage Service. Created for display at the Cameron Lecture 2017, a biennial public lecture held at the University of Nottingham in memory of Prof. Kenneth Cameron.

Ethnoecology studies human beings’ relation with their environment aiming at understanding several current social-ecological problems such as ecological degradation and loss of cultural diversity, mainly from a local point of view. Since 2006, the research team of the Ethnoecology Laboratory (Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona) is conducting research projects focused on the study of social, cultural, political, and ecological factors and dynamics influencing the relation of rural and indigenous communities in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Europe, with their surrounding environment. Contrary to the common practice of simply extracting information from rural communities, projects from the Ethnoecology Laboratory blend academic research and actions oriented to return their findings to the populations where they take place to contribute in some direct or indirect way to the improvement of their well-being and sustainable use of natural resources.

Conservation organizations often invest considerable resources in education and outreach activities in and around marine protected areas (MPAs). The expectation is that such efforts will change local knowledge, attitudes and ultimately behavior. This is one of the first studies to assess the efficacy of using education and outreach activities to improve community knowledge and attitudes about an MPA. Random sample surveys in 2005 and 2010 (n1⁄41213) before and after education and outreach activities are compared. Program budgets for the same period give the investment levels. With an investment level averaging US$24 per capita/year, the result was an average increase of 33% in ‘‘yes’’ responses across 15 indicators of knowledge and attitudes towards marine conservation. The increase in knowledge and positive attitudes was associated with a large decrease in ‘‘not sure’’ responses, suggesting that community members with fewer initial preconceptions are the most effective target for education and outreach activities. This study demonstrates that investments in MPA education and outreach can generate increases in local knowledge and positive attitudes, and changing knowledge and attitudes is expected to contribute to the long-term compliance with MPA regulations.

Agriculture is the second most important industry in Florida having a market value of over $7.35 billion. In the United States, only 1.3% of the population works in agriculture and the average age of a farmer is 57.5 yr old, which supports a need for youth to pursue careers in agricultural fields. Despite the importance of this industry, there is a growing disconnect between the public and agriculture as demonstrated by low agricultural literacy levels. An outreach program and pre- and postsurveys were used to gain a better understanding of the need for agricultural literacy educational programs in Florida. Outreach curricula were designed on four topics related to agricultural literacy; ‘Plant Biosecurity: Local and Global Perspectives’, ‘Invasive Species that Affect Plants’, ‘Introduction to Entomology’, and ‘Florida Agriculture: Current Issues and Potential Careers’. Marine Vanlandeghem est doctorante à l'Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, où elle consacre ses recherches à la gestion du feu dans l'habitat des populations du nord-ouest de l'Alaska. Elle étudie les vestiges de foyers et pratique des expérimentations pour reconstituer leur fonctionnement. Elle se rend régulièrement sur le terrain, tant pour participer à des fouilles que pour poursuivre ses travaux à l'Université de Fairbanks.
