Walter Benjamin is today regarded as one of the leading thinkers of the twentieth century. Often captured in pensive pose, his image is now that of a serious intellectual. But Benjamin was also a fan of the comedies of Adolphe Menjou, Mickey Mouse, and Charlie Chaplin. As an antidote to repressive civilization, he developed, through these figures, a theory of laughter. Walter Benjamin and the Aesthetics of Film is the first monograph to thoroughly analyse Benjamin's film writings, contextualizing them within his oeuvre whilst also paying attention to the various films, actors, and directors that sparked his interest. The book situates all these writings within Benjamin's 'anthropological materialism', a concept that analyses the transformations of the human sensorium through technology. Through the term 'innervation', Benjamin thought of film spectatorship as an empowering reception that, through a rush of energy, would form a collective body within the audience, interpenetrating a liberated technology into the distracted spectators. Benjamin's writings on Soviet film and German cinema, Charlie Chaplin, and Mickey Mouse are analysed in relation to this posthuman constellation that Benjamin had started to dream of in the early twenties, long before he began to theorize about films.

The chapter presents all Benjamin's texts citing/using the figure of Mickey Mouse: a) “Mickey-Mouse”; b) “Experience and Poverty”; c) the entry W8a,5 of the Arcades Project; d) and chapter 16 of the second version or the Artwork essay. These texts constitute a “constellation” in which Benjamin puts to the test and evaluates a series of suggestions arising from the context of his writings in the 1930: the question of the body, the Unmensch, the loss of experience, mechanical reproduction, etc. – and, of course, the political implications of the transformation Mickey Mouse represents and stages. These texts are, in turn, also in a constellation with our times, in which we are still faced by the necessity of deactivate the limits separating the organic and the machine, human and animal, female and male, and to invent a new relation between the human, technology and nature and a new social, economic and sexual organization.

Il fenomeno cinematografico di Mickey Mouse affascinò profondamente Walter Benjamin. Il “Walter Benjamin Archive” conserva una serie di ritagli di giornale in francese e tedesco su Disney e Mickey Mouse che mostrano come il filosofo seguisse con attenzione il progressivo sviluppo di quello che, già negli anni Trenta, era un vero e proprio fenomeno culturale. Da qui una intensa riflessione operata da Benjamin su Michey Mouse, sparsa in diversi frammenti e opere. Sabemos que el cine es un medio audiovisual que une imagen y sonido. También es obvio que es un medio de masas muy popular. ¿Qué tiene para que atraiga tanto al público? ¿Existen características innatas en el ser humano que le hacen compartir y vivir experiencias comunes mediante este arte?
La música es un componente básico en la vida de las personas, y el cine lo sabe. Se ha valido durante mucho tiempo, así como muchas otras manifestaciones artísticas han hecho a lo largo de la historia, de las amplias capacidades de la música para comunicar, expresar o alcanzar objetivos concretos. ¿Tiene la música un sentido propio o depende de los demás medios con los que colabore para cobrar algún significado?
La mente es una gran red de conexiones neuronales que trabaja sin descanso, y sin saberlo nosotros. Sin embargo, sabemos que adquirimos información del medio externo. ¿Cómo trabaja el cerebro para procesar ese cambio de lo físico a lo mental? ¿Procesamos la información de la misma forma todos los individuos?
Éstas serán las preguntas clave que este TFE va a intentar dilucidar. Para ello, haremos un recorrido por los orígenes del cine y de la música en nuestra sociedad, buscando entender los procesos neuronales que las personas realizan al estar en contacto con estas artes, mediante una perspectiva basada en el cine de animación de la compañía Disney y en el clarificador efecto del Mickey Mousing.

ABSTRACT

We know that cinema is an audiovisual medium that connects image and sound. It is also obvious that it is a very popular mass medium. What does it have to attract the public so much? Are there innate characteristics in the humans that make them share and live common experiences through this art?
Music is a basic component in people's life, and cinema knows it. It has used for a long time, as well as many other artistic manifestations have done throughout history, the big abilities of music to communicate, express or achieve specific objectives. Does music have a sense of its own or does it depend on the other media with which it collaborates to gain some meaning?
The mind is a great network of neural connections that works tirelessly, and without our awareness. However, we know that we acquire information from the external environment. How does the brain work to process that change from the physical to the mental? Do we process information in the same manner all individuals?
These will be the key questions that this TFE will try to light. To do this, we will explore the origins of cinema and music in our society, trying to understand the neural processes that people perform when they are in contact with these arts, through a perspective based on the animation films of the Disney’s company and on the clarifying effect of Mickey Mousing.

This thesis examines Walter Benjamin’s film aesthetics within the framework of his ‘anthropological-materialist’ project. His writings on film are dispersed among essays, notes and letters and may appear at first sight to be an incoherent collection of thoughts on film. However, I will try to argue that they form part of the same philosophical and political project as his ‘anthropological materialism.’ Thus, these writings sought, first, to analyse the transformation of the human senses brought about by the appearance of film technology; and secondly, to envisage the possibility of undoing the alienation of the senses in modernity through that very same technology in order to, eventually, create a collective body (Kollectivleib) out of the audience. This project dates back to Benjamin’s anthropological texts from the early 1920s and was central to texts such as One-Way Street, the Surrealism essay and ‘The Work of Art in the Age of Its Technological Reproducibility.’ The reconfiguration of aesthetics as aisthēsis that takes place in the latter text is analysed as forming part of this project, in which Benjamin is concerned with the transformation of the human body according to its interaction with technology. 

From this anthropological-materialist perspective, I address from the second chapter onwards the film figures—directors, actors, characters—and films that most concerned Benjamin. Thus, I analyse his writings on Soviet film with regard to the use and conception of technology in the country; the impact of the bungled reception of technology in Germany upon films from the Weimar Republic and National Socialism, especially in their representation of mass movements; the rehabilitation of allegory in the twentieth century with Charlie Chaplin and the possibility of undoing the numbing of the senses through his gestic and allegorical performance; and, finally, Mickey Mouse as a representative of the new barbarism that Benjamin advocated within his critique of bourgeois humanism.

This volume brings together scholars based predominantly in Asia to contribute provocative and experimental essays on the dynamic relationship between animation and philosophy. In an inventive and playful philosophical way, they address not only the mainstay of Japanese animation, but also Korean film, picture books and Mickey Mouse to understand what we might call film\-philosophy in Asia. In thinking animation with concepts from the technicolour philosophies of Deleuze, Guattari, Stiegler, Benjamin, Kristeva and Heidegger, the book sees animation not as a representation of a philosophical idea per se, but conceptualizes it as a philosophical thinking\-device. In the images themselves, what is at work is not just the thinking of a particular director or manga artist, but, rather, thinking as such, through and by the images themselves. The scholars in this collection are committed to thinking images themselves as thought\-experiments and thinking machines.

This article reports results from a study of perceived emotion
portrayal in cartoons by different groups of subjects. A set of
audiovisual stimuli was selected through a procedure in two steps.
First, 6 ‘judges’ evaluated a large number of random snippets from
all Mickey Mouse cartoons released between 1928 and -35.
Analysis singled out the five films ranking highest in portraying
respectively anger, sadness, fear, joy and love/tenderness.
Subsequently, 4 judges made a continuous evaluation of emotion
portrayal in these films, and six maximally unambiguous
sequences were identified in each. The stimuli were presented to
two groups (N=33), one in which the subjects were expected to be
visually oriented, and one where they would tend to be more
aurally oriented, in three different ways: bimodally (original) and
unimodally, i.e as an isolated sound or video track. We
investigated how group and modus conditions influenced the
subjects’ perception of the relative intensity of the five emotions,
as well as the sense of realism portrayed in the cartoon clips, and
how amusing they were found to be. Finally, we developed an
estimate for visual-aural orientation as a linear combination of
select self-reported variables, and tested it as a predictor for the
perception of medium dominance.

This article considers a recent trend for Disney to produce modern texts that evoke Mickey Mouse's pre-Technicolor days. Unlike James Bond and Batman, Disney still continues to market Mickey as a star (rather than a long-running character), with the sense that there is (somehow) coherence to be found.
